Cool Cruiser

Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. My niece and I were on Serenade earlier this summer. We had early fixed dining. Two nights we got back late from excursions. We knew we might need to go to the Windjammer but stopped by the MDR and asked if they could work us in. Both times they found us a table with our usual servers.
  2. special_needs@rccl.com is the email address for accessibility questions. Before I reserved an accessible cabin for my Mom for the first time I emailed the cruise line’s special needs department. I outlined what Mom needed to be safe (raised toilet seat or grab bars by the toilet, low or no step over in the shower, and grab bars in the shower). I asked whether we could/should reserve an accessible cabin. They said yes. I don’t recall whether that first accessible cruise was on Royal, Celebrity, or Holland. Mom and I sailed on all three during those years.
  3. I am just back from Serenade of the Seas. What struck me is that there is no place without piped in sounds. The Solarium has the artificial birds chirping. I thought the open back deck on 11 (beyond the Windjammer) would be quiet between meals but I could hardly hear the wake or the waves because the soft rock greatest hits were playing so loudly. It is odd to be sailing on the ocean and not hear the water sounds.
  4. I have been on two Alaska cruises in late August/early September. One trip had beautiful skies all week. The other trip had a fair amount of rain. The temperature wasn’t cold except sailing past the Hubbard glacier. An optional river raft excursion was cool and wet, not the best combination.
  5. @SightCRR, Thank you for your help. I have booked wildlife-focused shore excursions - whale watching in Juneau, Fortress of the Bears and the raptor center in Sitka, and a private tour in Ketchikan. I thought it would be a treat to also spot a whale spout or two while we are sailing.
  6. Hi all. My niece and I are cruising up the Alaska coast this summer. I hope to spend some time on deck looking for wildlife while we are underway. Are there places along the route where wildlife is more abundant? Our itinerary is Vancouver-Sitka-Tracy Arm-Juneau-Hubbard Glacier-Ketchikan-Vancouver. Thanks for your help.
  7. I have had mal de debarquement a few times. It lasted more than 48 hours at least once, but ultimately resolved (in a week or so) without medical intervention.
  8. This time I booked a package that included a restaurant credit. The math just worked out better. I don’t think a package is necessary for bag transfer to the cruise ship.
  9. I am flying from Atlanta to Vancouver later this month. The legs are Atlanta to Seattle then Seattle to Vancouver. I flew this route a few years ago but can’t remember if I have to pick up my checked bag in Seattle, go through customs, then check the bag back in or if the Seattle layover is like a US domestic one and all customs/immigration tasks happen once I land in Vancouver. I would appreciate help from those familiar with similar itineraries. I am scheduled to be in Seattle for about an hour and a half. That is plenty of time if I just have to walk from one gate to another but tight if I have to claim and recheck a bag. Thanks for your help.
  10. “will we be good with t-shirts, fleece/sweatshirts, rain coat? “ I have taken five cruises to Alaska. T-shirts, fleece/sweaters, and rain coat are what I take. I used to take silk long underwear, but never needed it. I do take a hat and gloves. I do not hike, kayak, etc. so can’t say if active excursions require warmer clothes. Have fun!
  11. Hi @MommyCruiser81 . I can help a little bit with the weather question. The weather in Alaska in unpredictable and can change a lot in the same day. Highs will probably be is the 60s or 70s, but might be higher or lower. I prefer to take layers so I can adjust each day. I take a combination or tanks/tees, long sleeve tops or sweaters, and fleece jackets or pullovers. I also take a waterproof jacket. Some of the ports are prone to rain. On glacier sailing days I also wear a hat and gloves. Best wishes for a great vacation.
  12. @Reds4life, I have cruised in Alaska a few times, including one July trip. I plan to return this year about the time you sail. As others have said, layers are key. Like your wife, I like to plan my clothes well ahead of time. If it helps her to know, I am taking tee shirts and tank tops for a base layer, a fleece pullover and fleece jacket for the coldest weather, and cotton pullovers or cardigans for the in between. I have a waterproof, unlined, hooded jacket to rainproof the other layers. If you are cruising near a glacier, that will likely be your coldest day. On glacier day I wear fleece plus a hat or scarf to cover my ears. Packing one fleece shirt or jacket would be enough. I pack two for choices. My regular pants are warm enough. I used to take silk long Johns but never used them. YMMV but if my core is warm the rest is ok. I do not do strenuous excursions, so do not need specialized outdoors clothes. Enjoy your trip!
  13. Thank you, @chengkp75. I learn something every time you post.
