Dunedin Shuttle Buses

Are there shuttle buses on the wharf ? to take you into town or do you have to book through Celebrity some port towns have complementary transport thank you Aussie

yes there are i think it was about $30 return, and is quite a drive to the octagon

You can catch a local bus from Port Chalmers to Dunedin, although it travels via a scenic route (if time in port is short).

Check out the timetable. It is not a frequent service .....and even less frequent on a Sat/Sun.

The shuttle buses run from the port to the Octagon, central Dunedin.

There's no free shuttle buses at Port Chalmers.

Unfortunately one cannot rely on local public transport from Port Chalmers to the city. Whilst it is a lot cheaper you may lose too much valuable time waiting for the bus there and back. You are going to have to bite the bullet and use the ships paid shuttle. That's what OBC is for

Just a suggestion, we took a tour in Dunedin that included pick up at port, great commentary on things to do and see on the way into town, and drop off at the Octagon for some free time to explore. We had plenty of time to grab a coffee with the locals at a cafe, visited the Cadbury Factory and the boys in our group toured Speights Brewery while we girls hit the shops. We were then picked up as pre-arranged and had a great tour of the sights of Dunedin including St Claire, Baldwin St, a lookout, drive through the countryside, university campus, local architecture and general points of interest. We were then dropped back at the ship at the end of the day.

The tour guide knew his stuff, very informative and entertaining. Our group consisted of two families, nine people and as the buses were mini buses, so we almost filled the bus. There were at least two buses that picked up that day.

We booked all our tours direct and saved heaps compared to the cruise tours, plus it also gave us the freedom of doing what we wanted, not having to commit to one tour with the ship or another. We think we got to see a lot (for the limited time you have in port) for our money. From memory, I think we paid $36 each for the shuttle and tour. We were very happy with our day.

This may be an alternative option for a shuttle.

We are doing the Christmas and NYE Radiance of the Seas Cruise and we are looking at doing the Experience Dunedin V8 bike tour, only available privately. It gets back to the town center at 3:35pm. Does anybody know if this will leave us enough time to get the shuttle back to the boat for a 6pm departure?

There is a hop on hop off bus at the wharf (except Sundays). At the end of the day there are multiple buses from outside the tourist bureau returning passengers to the ship.

For something completely different, if you don't want to travel too far...there's a great little cafe/restaurant...with an outdoor courtyard...about half way up the main street of Port Chalmers, on the right. They have live acoustic bands, with chill music on some days..particularly weekends....and great food.

NZ tourist board also sells the shuttle bus tickets and other tours. You get off the boat and the tourist board is in a tent on the pier.

Take the ships shuttle and book the brewery direct If you are seniors you get a good discount and you get a better tour than with the huge Cruise ship group We had a tasting in the board room where there were 8 beers and one coder to try as many times as we liked fabulous time Their lunch is also excellent value Then while in Octagon visit the old railway stationm and see the art and sports museums

And just remember, for those that don't want to go into Dunedin, can I suggest you go to the Carey's Bay Hotel for the best seafood lunch. They also cater for non seafood eaters.

It is about a 15 minute walk from the ship around the bay. Or you can phone them and get their little mini van to pick you up.

You should be OK. Even if you had to wait a little for a shuttle bus you'd still be back at the ship by around 4:30pm and the all aboard time probably won't be until 5:30pm for a 6pm departure.

BTW if it's a nice evening go up on deck forward for the sailaway. Watching the ship navigate the narrow channel is fascinating, and you might see albatross as the ship passes the heads.
