Dining/ food quality, Princess Cruises

I have been sailing on princess for about 30 years. I don't ever remember trays.

I was on Grand 6-8 times when it entered service (1998?). No trays.

On the other hand, if the food is "unappetizing and Salvation Army quality", why would one want

a tray to carry more of it?

The last time we remember trays was on a Mexican Riviera cruise on the Dawn in 2008. I know they had trays on the four previous cruises that we did (one on the old Regal, one on the Grand, and two on the Sun). I always got my wife "breakfast in bed" from the buffet on the first day and always had a tray to carry plates of food back to the cabin. We have pictures of us on the balcony of the Sun in Tracy Arm in 2006 with friends because we got breakfast to eat on the balcony that morning. We didn't get back to Princess until 2013 and the trays were gone by then.

BTW, good question at the end of your post.

I have only had the pleasure of one cruise with princess, I think it was in 2011. The food was good. But I wont complain what is set before me that is ordered, unless it was cold or undercooked and had to send it back. It is sad to see people get attacked on these boards lately. I have not been able to afford cruising, let alone eat at high dollar places. But if that is how people want to judge me for not having enough money for things, that is on them. I don't care what people can and can not afford, no one is better than anyone else.

I can't comment on the validity of the claims made in this thread, but I can attest to reading practically the same criticisms, down to the exact words in some cases, on the Carnival forum, the Royal Caribbean forum, and the Holland America forum. Chillingly similar.

Very well-said. There are too many posters who judge folks by the clothes which they wear or the restaurants at which they choose to dine.

Or, as has been clearly demonstrated on this thread, those superiority types who judge and attack others for having a different opinion than they have. Attacking someone for not liking certain food items as much as they do! Seriously????

It's just a reflection of society, people being treated quite differently by some based on religion, race, gender, sexual identity, nationality, disability, height, weight, etc. Many folks engage in and doggedly defend their excessive prioritization of there own social group, despite generalized denials.

I wrote that something was funny. How would one go about 'proving' that?

Well, there are lots of theories of humor, so some examples might be:

Superiority Theory: It's funny because it's an expression of superiority over other people or ourselves at a past time.

Relief Theory: It's funny because something caused a buildup of nervous energy, and laughter is its release.

Incongruity Theory: It's funny because there is an incongruity between what was expected and what actually happened.

Benign Violations Theory: It's funny because there was a benign violation of some social more.

Or, of course, you could be using the term "funny" to mean "odd," as opposed to "humorous," e.g., as a roundabout way of accusing someone of hypocrisy.

I would guess that it was a feeble and sarcastic attempt to ridicule someone: "I think that it is too funny that your comment is so idiotic." Based on other responses made by this poster on several threads, including posting insulting replies to the poster he was actually replying to, something tells me that this is the actual reason.

High School flashbacks of The Mean Girls Clique can be so rattling sometimes! Probably nothing that a few therapy sessions can't help!

Afterall.... this is a Princess Food Quality thread, which is very subjective. A topic second only to dress code when it comes to bringing out the "mean girl" in all of us. It can be fun to watch, learn about the food, and sample human ( or not-so) interactions.

Who said Cruise Critic Forums were only about cruise information? Jerry Springer isn't on 24/7, now is it?

And to bring this full circle, Princess still serves outstanding pasta choices with phenomenal sauces.

Just sailed on the Grand in Jun. My 18th Princess cruise. Horizon grill food has gotten so bad it probably compares to a soup kitchen. I guess they want to drive you to a specialty restaurant and get more of your money.

That's a little harsh. It might have degraded but I'm sure it's not that bad.

Even the time the food wasn't great I could always find something that was prepared decently.

Totally agree! Screams 1st world problems to me! I always find something too. These people need to upgrade to Oceania, Silver Sea, Regent and lines like that if Princess if falling below standards that they "expect" ;p

Have you ever been to a soup kitchen?

I have ( both the serving and receiving end) and I can tell you the food was fantastic.

Maybe you should go and volunteer a few hundred hours in a soup kitchen. I think your whole perspective would change.

Well said. Living in Las Vegas I have a lot of experience with buffets both in casinos and non casinos. I would say princess holds up well against most buffets. It would be interesting to know the expectation and comparison.

Same here. I may have complained about food quality going down on the Eclipse(which it did) but I certainly found plenty to eat. The specialty rest. were as excellent as always, but we're not about to spend that much for the food on a nightly basis. On a cruise, we like decently prepared food, presented nicely by nice staff. On all our cruises, I have to say the MDR staff on the Regal were the most caring of any we've ever had. To me that was better than the food!

I made a comment to a sous chef one evening at the buffet that the creamed spinach was to salty. He immediately went over to the station and had therm add more cream (?) to dilute it. They would never respond like that in the DR.

I wonder how the cooks on Celebrity would handle the situation.

Adding more Spinach as well, would help, too. Once you've added too much salt, it's hard to fix it properly. Hard to say the response one would get in the MDR. on Celebrity. Not had the problem there. I'd think in the buffet, they'd probably respond somewhat the same.

As everybody says it is up to the individual person, we love food, and have been too some of the top boutique hotel in our country, so we were just going with the flow.

Breakfast we have a Sabatini's and it was great. lunch was just a bit to eat from the horizon court, ( you could find some nice things ) Dinner out of 13 night we only ate at the MDR 3 times the rest was either Sabatini's or the Crown Grill, which we thought was more restaurant style food, and particularly the service, OK is cost more but overall it made the cruise a lot better for 5% extra a lot cheaper that on the more upmarket cruise line.

So you get what you pay for, you go mid tier cruise line at high end with extra, or go at the bottom of a high tier cruise line. the answer is yours and how deep your pockets are.

So overall princess sits in the middle good food and service are there, but you have to pay for it.
