Hurricane Irma's destruction in the Caribbean will have a significant impact on multi-billion dollar tourism industry for months The hotels, airlines, and cruises were gearing up for peak winter season. The hotels, airports and other buildings suffered significant damage. It is not just a matter of picking up the debris in the streets and getting on with life. The piers where cruise ships moot should be relatively undamaged because of their construction, but the infrastructure to support the cruisers is severely impacted. Some of the prime vacation islands such as St. Martin and Barbuda were almost completely flattened. I know there will be a full court press to get what they can back on line for the $$$$. The smaller entities - private concessionaires will be the ones left out. Though they will be hustling.

I figure the jewelry stores near the docks held out well, lots of reinforcement. It's, as you said, the small businesses will get the worst

Whatever cruising plans I do will keep me close to home as possible just in case I need to leave a port unexpectedly. Bahamas, Key West, Cocoa Beach.

The pictures coming in from the islands in terms of the utter devastation are simply astounding. there is limit as to how fast the reconstruction and resumption of business can go even with throwing tons of money at it. Given the reliance on tourism for their incomes I am sure the islands will be gung ho to get at least a partial resumption of tourist activity going but the issues that cruise passengers for example deal with go far beyond just being able to moor at a concrete pier. There are fresh water and supplies that have to be taken on at most ports as those of us who have seen the countless tractor trailers at ports of call can attest to. With the airports and infrastructure to move those supplies severely crippled it will be a while for them to get back up and running. For those countries that drive on the wrong side of the road there will be vehicles that were irreparable to replace and being as most of them come from far offshore that too will take time provided that the operators of those vehicles can afford to replace them. I guess the upside to this devastation is that they will have to work hard at luring tourists back there which could end up with some rather predatory pricing while western and southern carribbean routes take up most of the business.

One thing I don't mention enough on here is how much I have to rely on Barb who's been absolutely wonderful. Without her i' d seriously be in a nursing home. My leg nerves are apparently shot forever; I'm pretty much numb from the waist down, which means I can't always control things down there. I can't begin to express how much Barb helps. PURE LOVE.

That is wonderful! It is part of the deal, too, in my book. When one spouse needs assistance, the other steps up. It is a team effort. "For better or for worse." Good on her!

Latest home and cruise news:

Suite a possibility. Might break our budget for a while, but hey! You can't take it with you. Like most people I'm probably under insured, but it's not crucial. I have a couple life instances and BARB WILL GET MY PENSION. NOt sure how I just got caps on my iPad.

Home: got a hospital bed which helps because I can get out of bed easier. Things are now pretty settled. Downstairs I can walk to my office. To do work. Only need to go upstairs for showers.

Some nights I wake up and watch tv at 3 or 4 AM. ITS LIKE WHEN I WAS A KID Saturday mornings. Roy Rogers, Lone Ranger and maybe Cheap's favorite: SGT Preston of the Yukon ( a very efficient RMCP).

Getting a bit independent, got up at 5 and got my own breakfast.. Might not sound like much, nut it's an accomplishment.

We moved up to a Suite for more room. Chris & Loralie will go with us. FJ. I think; lots of room, not much extra perks, but I think the cabin size will be a big plus.

Had a lot of therapy yesterday. They can't do much, show me exercises to keep my legs strong (never will get the nerves back), but I still have to keep muscle tone. Wore me out, I'm beat today. Therapy is mostly stopping as they can't improve me, so insurance won't pay.

Bummer!

Hang in there!

I'm onboard Allure dodging hurricanes! My cruise friend from Texas went through Harvey, then Irma screwed up our plans, then Jose (not much a problem) and now Maria!! Allure cruise last week was shortened to a four night, flights cancelled, redone for Tuesday, cancelled again, redone again....along with hotel reservations. We decided to do the shortened four night but added the seven night after it. Our itinerary has changed multiple times....enroute now to Labadee tomorrow then Falmouth the following day and two sea days, and back to Ft Lauderdale. Still enjoying, although planning has been stressful with all the cancellations and changes.

r

Have you ever seen a crazier hurricane season in your life?? You have a lot more experience; I've never seen anything like this. I can only think of a couple of changed ports in all of our cruises.

Barb. Tells me I'm wrong about what I posted earlier. I'm still getting physical therapy, not getting a home health to help occasionally. They do what we can. Our insurance has been great through everything up until now. Seems few insurances go for all extra help. Not complaining, they've been fair.

Counting down the days until Oct 21. I feel okay, you just wonder what each next day brings. I'm not expecting any dramatic changes,, and every day feels like a win. Life certainly throws curves at us. Never could hit a good curve, but I'm still trying (and expecting to succeed).
