Hurricane Irma's destruction in the Caribbean will have a significant impact on multi-billion dollar tourism industry for months The hotels, airlines, and cruises were gearing up for peak winter season. The hotels, airports and other buildings suffered significant damage. It is not just a matter of picking up the debris in the streets and getting on with life. The piers where cruise ships moot should be relatively undamaged because of their construction, but the infrastructure to support the cruisers is severely impacted. Some of the prime vacation islands such as St. Martin and Barbuda were almost completely flattened. I know there will be a full court press to get what they can back on line for the $$$$. The smaller entities - private concessionaires will be the ones left out. Though they will be hustling.I figure the jewelry stores near the docks held out well, lots of reinforcement. It's, as you said, the small businesses will get the worst
One thing I don't mention enough on here is how much I have to rely on Barb who's been absolutely wonderful. Without her i' d seriously be in a nursing home. My leg nerves are apparently shot forever; I'm pretty much numb from the waist down, which means I can't always control things down there. I can't begin to express how much Barb helps. PURE LOVE.That is wonderful! It is part of the deal, too, in my book. When one spouse needs assistance, the other steps up. It is a team effort. "For better or for worse." Good on her!
Had a lot of therapy yesterday. They can't do much, show me exercises to keep my legs strong (never will get the nerves back), but I still have to keep muscle tone. Wore me out, I'm beat today. Therapy is mostly stopping as they can't improve me, so insurance won't pay.
Hang in there!
I'm onboard Allure dodging hurricanes! My cruise friend from Texas went through Harvey, then Irma screwed up our plans, then Jose (not much a problem) and now Maria!! Allure cruise last week was shortened to a four night, flights cancelled, redone for Tuesday, cancelled again, redone again....along with hotel reservations. We decided to do the shortened four night but added the seven night after it. Our itinerary has changed multiple times....enroute now to Labadee tomorrow then Falmouth the following day and two sea days, and back to Ft Lauderdale. Still enjoying, although planning has been stressful with all the cancellations and changes.
