Getting a family of 5 from the airport to downtown

Recommended Posts

Here's your options....

  • Two cabs will set you back $62 ($47 USD) plus tip.
  • Five people on the subway will set you back $7.85 each or $39.25 ($30 USD)
  • third option is Aerocar limo that can take 5 passengers next to cab line for $61 ($46 USD) plus tips.

  • forth option is to put four people in the cab with luggage. Have one person ride the train downtown.

Thoughts....

  • 7pm arrival means 7:45 exiting airport. You can be at the hotel by 8:30pm. Daylight depends on which day you are arriving.
  • after exiting the airport, I would walk over to the Aerocar booth and discuss if a limo can take you all. Otherwise two cabs
  • You can save $17 USD with the train. However....

[*]Georgia/Robson street is generally a nice walk from VCC to the YWCA. The Expo Granville station entranceways can be unpleasant to walk thru at night.

We will be staying at the YWCA Hotel prior to our upcoming cruise. If we take the Canada Line to downtown, we would then transfer to the Expo Line and get off at Stadium-Chinatown.

Our flight doesn't get into Vancouver until 7:00 P.M. Knowing it will take us some time to get through customs and to get to the train, thinking we might not be at our final stop to depart the train before 8:30 - 9:00 P.M. How safe would we be at our final stop and walk to the YWCA. Would taking a taxi be a better choice?

Our concern is that we will both have one large suitcase and a carry on or backpack. We wouldn't be as mobile as we might be without all of this. Thanks for any light anyone might shed on this plan.

I think xlxo has misread your question and assumed you're another large family due to the title of the thread...

I never recommend any SkyTrain line except Canada with luggage - it's the only one designed for large bags, and you risk a $150pp fine by blocking an aisle, seat, wheelchair or bike spot (the only possible places to put a large bag on Expo/Millennium Lines). Plus, the wasted time going to Waterfront and hassle of changing platforms or a long walk through the mall between City Centre and Granville (faster than going to Waterfront but still slow) means it's more often faster to just get off at City Centre and walk along Georgia to the hotel instead.

So, not because of safety but purely convenience/speed, if you don't feel up to wheeling our bags from City Centre station to the hotel take a cab. xlxo's prices are accurate; one cab is $31+tip compared to just under $16 by SkyTrain in the evening. You'll find fewer homeless folks hanging around at night than during the day, so if anything the 'vibe' is safer if that's the sort of thing you find scary - and actual crime against persons is vanishingly low here compared to the US. You could walk around the worst bits of downtown drunk as a lord and you're more likely to find yourself being poured into a cab by someone helpful than mugged.
