Safety for women cruising solo...

I love cruising solo. The only thing that sucks is the single supplement but oh well (I'm working on that).

I've cruised and travelled on my own a lot. Even though I think it's safe on a ship, common sense and your gut is still needed.

Enjoy!!!!

I have traveled about 6 times Solo on Cruises and it has not been a problem. I sort of review the ports and determine if I want to walk it on my own or take a tour.

It has not been a problem. I love the freedom of being able to change my plans and my mind and not disappoint a roommate.

Just returned a few weeks ago from Solo Cruise and met a Mother/Daughter

in line. We did several things together in a few ports. We did not prearrange anything. We just seemed to be at same area at same time. It was a lot of fun.

I was determined to not let life pass me by because of the Solo situation, and not everyone has vacation time or wants to go the same places I do.

Enjoy...Explore and Live your dreams!

It reminds me of the solution if you have someone following you in your car. Don't drive home - drive to a police station.

That's the approach I take - if I thought someone was following me, I'd steer away from my cabin, back to the nearest busy spot.

The other thing to remember is that many of the "lonely" places on a ship are corridors lined with cabins. While it would be an absolute last resort, if I felt I was in immediate danger I'd have no compunction about hammering on every single door until someone stuck their head out. I'd rather a few people be angry with me for disturbing them than to risk my personal safety out of shyness :)

Don't post cabin number on the boards.

I hope everyone would be smart enough not to do that  that's asking for trouble.

I'm very involved in my Roll Call but have made no mention about specific details besides the fact that I will be on the ship. I have a blog that I post in when I'm traveling and I don't reveal where I am until I've left that destination. You have to be cautious all around.

I will be cruising The Mediterranean August 2018 solo and was wondering if it will be safe doing my own exploring in ports... have read a lot about cruise ship tourists being targeted.

It depends on which ports. In August there will likely be so many tourists about, it won't much matter in most places whether you're solo or not.

This year I embarked on my 9th Med cruise, of which all but two have been solo. Most of the time I do my own touring in ports using public transportation or taxis. Occasionally I will join a private tour and very very rarely will take a ship tour.

I don't think cruise ship tourists are targeted any more than tourists in general. And the reason tourists are targeted is because some of them forget to pay attention to their surroundings.

I was reading this post and it started back in 2012...this may have been before the time of solo cabins! With that being said it must be somewhat impossible to hide your solo since the solo cabins on NCL have a separate lounge for us! Guess the advice would be to NOT give out your room number!

Also, with all the issues in Mexico with drinks being spiked by bartenders I wonder if this ever happens on the cruise ships?

I seriously doubt bartenders would want to risk their jobs to spike a drink and I have been cruising solo for nearly 15

years. It has never happened to me before.

I've been cruising solo since 2003, and have never heard nor seen such incidents occurring. Since a cruise ship is a closed environment, if such activity were going on, it would be easy to determine who the culprits were.

I may be naïve, but I don't think there's a deliberate effort on the part of men to book cruises in the hope of preying on hapless solo female passengers. I take reasonable precautions, but don't have a problem with telling people I'm sailing solo if asked.

No, and there usually isn't a deliberate effort on the part of men on land going to bars and restaurants planning to assault women -- but with alcohol and opportunity, some men will still do criminal things.

So, is this a common occurrence on cruise ships, and what can solo female cruisers do to prevent it from happening?

Roz

No, it is not a common occurrrence. Though I am new to sailing solo,, I have sailed a great many c ruises and only once have heard of a con firmable criminal episode on an innocent woman, by a stranger on a ship.

If you feel uneasy a any time, pick up a house phone and ask for security to escort you to your cabin. Be safe, not sorry. tHEY will thank you or it. They do no want any incidents on the ship parrticularly if a phone call could have avoided it.

No, it's not common, and you do the same things you do on land.....be aware of your surroundings, follow your gut, appeal to authorities if you are feeling at risk. It's not so much that it's common, just that there are still some people who think it doesn't happen because it's a cruise ship

I’m the one who originally Started the thread. I went on the cruise by myself and met a nice couple from Texas who I still keep in touch with and we are actually planning another cruise for September.

The only thing that happened on the first solo cruise I took in 2013 was a woman and her husband, who were obviously looking for a threesome, tried to pick me up at the first port, while I was hanging out by the pool. She said they had noticed I was traveling alone and did I want to join them for some fun. We weren’t even 24 hours into the cruise! I just said no thank you and that I already had plans and made my way back to the ship. No idea how they figured out I was alone as like I said; we weren’t even into our second night on the ship. They also weren’t in my hallway.

That is very weird......

They could have seen you by yourself anywhere. In line at check-in, in the Lido, at a show, etc.

But even when I'm traveling with my husband, we often each do our own thing during the day. Seeing someone on their own doesn't mean they are solo. Perhaps if one is alone at dinner it is more of an indicator.

Very true.......maybe the couple was just into their "own thing" and in their case? Years ago swingers seemed to be quite prevalent (no, not for all of us)......maybe this couple is still part of that genre and when they cruise, they seek out what looks like to be "solo traveler's"...........just a guess on my part.

I have only done one cruise so far, no one bothered me. Cuba coming up in a month :) Solo on that one too :)

You will have fun :)

Hi Alana, you started a Thread for the 23rd december Viking cruise and asked if anyone was interested in joining you on a Vatican tour, but it looks as though you have not visited that thread anymore to see the reactions to your question??

It wouldn't at all surprise me if solo people act differently than the person who is not traveling solo -- probably things you're not even aware of (body language). One of my best friends in school told me that when she first saw me, she thought I was married.....I've never been married and asked her why. She said there was just something about the way I walked and stood that made her think I was part of a couple. She was wrong about me, but the point is that some people can sense a difference, and some people put out a different vibe. Maybe it's like "gay-dar" - some people can sense a vibe about others that others can't sense.
