Matt & Ashley's Carnival Sunshine Review (Canada, Pictures, FunTimes)

Intro

Hi everyone! My name is Matt, and I’m an occasional poster on these boards. My wife, Ashley, and I just got back from a 5 day voyage on the Carnival Sunshine to the eastern Canada, and we had an amazing time. Back in January Ashley and I posted a review of our awesome cruise on the Carnival Pride (link in my signature). At that point we already had the Sunshine cruise booked, so for those of you who read our Pride review and expressed your eagerness to read our next review, welcome back!

This was our 6th cruise, and our very first time on the Sunshine. I think most of the folks on these boards will agree that among the best parts of this community are the long, picture-heavy reviews that folks post when they get back. Spending hours poring over them almost makes not being on vacation tolerable! Ashley and I hope you enjoy reading this as much as we enjoy reading everyone else’s.

About Us

Not a whole lot has changed since our last review. Ashley and I have been married just over 3 years now, and will have been together for 10 years this coming October. I’m a GIS Analyst (I make maps) for a consulting firm, and Ashley is a teacher (she teaches). We are both in our late twenties, though this will be the last review where I am able to say that, so I'll let you do the math and unlock my vagueness there. :)

Collectively we have both lived all over the DC metro area, but for now we live in beautiful Frederick, Maryland. We’re both pretty quiet and keep to ourselves – definitely aren’t party animals but our alcohol consumption does tend to rise once onboard. I am also an obsessive planner, particularly with vacations. I think it’s a little more evident with land vacations because I have so much more control over what we do, but you’ll still probably notice my compulsion at various points throughout this review.

Ashley and I are of the opinion that cruises are hands down the best types of vacations for us. We’re the type of cruisers who primarily view the ship as our destination, everything else is gravy. When we book a cruise, we don’t really pay too much attention to where it goes. What’s more important to us is from which port it leaves, and how long we are away from real life. When we’re sitting on our balcony during the daytime or walking around the upper decks in the evening and all we see is water for miles - that’s what it’s all about for us.

About this Review

For our previous review of the Pride, I really wished we had taken more pictures. Once we got on the ship we were just a little too overwhelmed. I kept that in mind going into this cruise, and I think I did a lot better. Pictures are still just from our phones, not actual cameras, and fair warning – we spent a lot of time on the balcony so there are going to be more than a handful from that perspective. We did see some cool stuff on that balcony. We’re also not really the type to take pictures of our food, so there won’t be much food porn (there will be a little more than last time, though). We will have pictures of the dining room menus from every night, and we’ll throw in the FunTime scans too.

Unfortunately Carnival doesn’t have any cruises offered with this itinerary after this year, which is unfortunate. Hopefully they resume cruises to eastern Canada, but until then we hope this review can be relevant to folks who are doing this itinerary this year or are generally interested in the Sunshine or eastern Canada cruises on other lines.

Arrgh - I was looking for more and I see you just started :) We've done this itinerary before but we will be doing the 7 day on the Sunshine in Sept, so I'm looking forward to everything about the ship! This will be our first on the Sunshine (love the Pride, BTW)

Also my sister lived in near Frederick for awhile - her husband is from there. Nice area.

Following right along and waiting for more!

Leading Up to the Cruise

As we approached our New Year’s Pride cruise, the “itch” started to grow more and more. I was consuming Pride videos and reviews as they came in, and looking at the deck plans even though I already knew the Pride like the back of my hand. I guess it just boiled over in August 2016 into needing to look at another ship. Ashley and I looked at prices for cruises out of every east coast port, and we decided to book the Sunshine out of New York for August 2017. This trip was very much an impulse buy for us.

Since we had such an abbreviated sailing, the price was a little lower than other cruises we’ve booked. I decided that this cruise would be our best opportunity to splurge and book a wraparound balcony on deck 6 (6346). As we were researching the Sunshine, we found a common complaint regarding its design. As Carnival converted the Carnival Destiny to the Sunshine, they removed many public areas and turned them into staterooms. The prevalent complaint that we found was that more guest capacity plus fewer public areas equals a very crowded ship. Some folks didn’t notice it, some did - we figured even if it turns out to be crowded, we’ll have a very large balcony all to ourselves so we can retreat back to that if we want.

We also purchased Faster to the Fun. FTTF is a cool add-on and we enjoy using it, but the price has gotten a little out-of-hand to us. We’ll probably pass on it next time, depending on the ship.

Early in our last review I mentioned that we have visited the steakhouse on every cruise we have been on. We decided that since this was a shorter cruise, we were going to skip the steakhouse this time (and the other specialty options) and do the main dining room all 5 evenings. That decision could be regarded as controversial given the plethora of dining options onboard, but we really like getting to know our wait staff and the whole dining room experience there. We didn’t want to sacrifice that, especially on a shorter trip. Stick around to see if we stuck to that.

Our last bits of planning involved how we would get to New York for embarkation, and what we would do in our ports-of-call. There was some discussion towards the end of our Carnival Pride thread, and we very much appreciate the advice everyone offered. In the end we decided to drive up, stay overnight in New Jersey, then drive to and park at the cruise terminal the next morning. We thought about staying in a hotel that offered transportation to the terminal, but I prefer to have more control over how and when we get there. I think most folks here can probably relate.

Finally - our port-of-call activities. Ashley and I discussed the possibilities several times, and our plans seemed to change by the month. In St. John, we thought about just getting off the ship and wandering around the surrounding area, but in the end we decided to actually rent a car and drive up past St. Martin’s to the Fundy Trail Parkway. In Halifax we were planning on heading to Peggy’s Cove, but we ultimately decided to wait on that, and instead just walk over to the Citadel and then head back along the wharf. More details on both when we get to them.

You’re not going to believe this, but this cruise really snuck up on us. We had a lot going on this summer, starting with a trip to Texas in early June, where we were able to visit our 18th MLB ballpark in Arlington, then drove to Austin for my buddy’s wedding. Then in late June, we had a family reunion in Sunset Beach, NC.

On our drive home from the reunion, Ashley and I decided to pass the time by giving some serious thought as to what cruise to book for the summer of 2018. I made a large spreadsheet comparing different sailings, their costs, and the travel-related costs associated with them, and we ultimately decided to check out a different cruise line to expand our horizons a little bit. We booked the Norwegian Getaway for August 2018, with a deal that Ashley and I felt was way too good to be true. It was so nice having another cruise booked when we walked off the Pride after New Year’s, and now we would have the same feeling when we walked off the Sunshine. As a bonus, we were able to get my parents to join us for this cruise!

Our last adventure before the cruise took place a couple weeks before, when Ashley and I took a weekend trip to Colorado to visit our 19th MLB ballpark in Denver (In case you’re curious for more details about our ballpark tour, check my signature). For the following two weeks we were focused on getting up to New York and getting on the Sunshine!

For our New Year’s Pride cruise we had been able to purchase several Carnival gift cards over the course of 3-4 months, which really made the Sail and Sign bill at the end of the cruise a little easier to swallow. For this cruise, we purchased 3 at our local grocery store over the course of a couple months. We really wish our store sold NCL gift cards for our next cruise but sadly, they do not.

As is customary, the week before the cruise was incredibly busy for me at work. It was highlighted by a client presentation that went well, but also marked with a handful of small crises and an 11th hour request on Friday afternoon. I survived everything, and it made being on vacation just that much sweeter. Saturday Ashley and I spent working in the yard, doing laundry and packing. This guy hates it when we get the suitcases out.

Day 0 - Sunday, August 6 – Getting to New Jersey

We got up at around 7:30am and enjoyed a nice, relaxed debarkation from the house. We had breakfast and finished packing and getting the house and cats ready for our week away from home. At about 10am we were in the car and on our way to New Jersey. We took I-70 E towards Baltimore…

…and hopped on I-95, where we saw a familiar looking ship.

Once we got past Baltimore we stopped at Mission BBQ for lunch. This is a cool chain of restaurants up and down the east coast that make a lot of contributions to various military, police, and first responder organizations. The food is pretty awesome. We finished a little past noon and continued up I-95. We hit a little traffic in Wilmington which caused us to get off the interstate for about a mile, but we were soon past that and headed over the Delaware Memorial Bridge crossing the Delaware River…

Thanks for following along! I try to get my reviews done relatively quickly so I don't forget anything, so hopefully you won't be waiting too long. Hope you enjoy the Sunshine, we sure did!

I hope so too! Oddly enough we are in the same cabin 6346 and we chose it for the same reason - to have a nice retreat if things get too crowded!

Enjoying your review so far. Saw the Sunshine here in Halifax a couple of days ago, we're getting excited for our sailing on Dec 17th.

We had the same concerns about the Sunshine. I also have a bit of an obsession with reviews, and have found many great Sunshine reviews.

Looking forward to the rest, hoping you had a great day in Halifax.

We arrived at our hotel just a little before 3pm. We were staying at the Courtyard by Marriott in Somerset, New Jersey. We had a pretty standard room on the 3rd floor. Everything was nice, especially the hotel staff.

We dropped our stuff off in our room and headed out for some mini golf at Colonial Park, which was right down the road from our hotel. Ashley and I love playing mini golf and we get pretty competitive. This was a very nice course, though it was a little crowded (despite the pictures below). The surrounding park looked very nice too, and there were a lot of families taking advantage of the great weather.

Ashley took an early lead on the front 9, I really fell apart on those 6th and 7th holes.

Then we headed to TD Bank Stadium, home of the Somerset Patriots to check out a “minor league” baseball game. I put minor league in quotes because the teams in this league actually do not have any affiliation to a major league team. The visiting team was actually the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. I grew up in Southern Maryland, but the Blue Crabs didn’t form until when I was in college, but I still have some fond memories going to their games when I was on summer break. I had to root for the Blue Crabs, of course, and they took the game 6-1.

It was Spider-Man day, so he was hanging out showing off his dance moves with the mascots.

We had a great time at the game, and they seem to have a great fanbase. Folks seemed very knowledgeable.

After the game we visited the Target next door to the stadium to grab a few last minute things for the cruise. Ashley took this picture of the stadium as we left.

We stopped at a Subway on the way back to the hotel for our dinner, and were back at the hotel just before 8pm.

We ate our subs as we watched Netflix on the hotel TV (which was a nice amenity!), and we were able to watch a fireworks show from our window before we headed to bed (hey, I didn't say all the pictures were gonna be winners).

Loving your review so far! We're leaving on the Sunshine next month to go to the NE (first time in that area of the world!). Worried about the thoughts of overcrowding. We don't have a nice balcony to retreat to! We also have one booked in January on her with the family, heading to Southern Caribbean.

Very interested in the rest of your review!

Wow!!! I don't even know where to begin. You were in our neighborhood as we live only a few blocks from the Courtyard by Marriott, and frequent the Ruby Tuesday's there. Glad you found Colonial Park. It is a great place to hang out. Patti and I have a partial season ticket plan for the Somerset Patriots, and were at the game the night before. Finally, though Patti and I are both retired, we both work for cruise money at the Target store that you visited, though neither of us work Sunday evenings. Patti's at Subway now getting us dinner. Small world isn't it? Hope you enjoyed your visit to what they say is the 5th best place to live in the country!!!

I hope so too! Oddly enough we are in the same cabin 6346 and we chose it for the same reason - to have a nice retreat if things get too crowded!

You'll love this cabin! Pictures are coming up.

The Sunshine is a great ship, you'll love her! We really enjoyed Halifax, it's a gorgeous city and the weather was perfect!

I'm enjoying your review so much.

There may be points where it feels crowded, but we were usually able to find spots (other than our balcony) that didn't have so many people.

Wow! Yeah we definitely enjoyed it. It was a great place to hang out before the cruise and it wasn't too expensive. At first we were thinking of staying closer to the GW bridge but decided not too. We especially enjoyed driving through the main streets of the Bound Brook area.

Day 1 - Monday, August 7 – Embarkation

I woke up at 6am and checked the weather. There was a pretty large system of storms looming over the area.

We got up at 7:30 and were checked out by about 8:30. We headed over to a Starbucks that was right down the road for breakfast. Starbucks gift cards are a pretty popular end-of-the-year gift for teachers, so when we are on vacation we cash them in for free breakfasts. We ate and set off for the cruise terminal at around 9:15. Soon we were back on the New Jersey Turnpike.

Our drive to the terminal wasn’t bad, all things considered. Traffic picked up a little bit once we passed Newark International Airport.

The signage to exit the parkway and get to the cruise terminal is pretty simple, and by 10:30 we were in line to pay to park and cross over in front of the ship to park at the pier. Parking in Manhattan isn’t cheap at $40 per day, so the damage was $200 for our 5 day cruise. If you’re on an 8 day cruise, it’ll run to $320!

We had to wait for other cars to exit the pier before we could move in to park, but once we moved forward we were directed to have our car and trunk sniffed by a police dog. We then dropped off our luggage to the porters and parked. This is from the parking area… and I thought parking in Baltimore was close to the ship!

We walked back down to the luggage drop-off area with our carry-ons to take the escalator down into the terminal. The process from here was rather ambiguous. Basically we had to find one of the tables to fill out a Canadian customs form before we could move through security. We only had to fill out one for the two of us. Security was very simple. I had 2 twelve packs of Diet Coke in my backpack, and they didn’t even ask me to take them out so they could inspect them. Your experience may vary, so smuggle at your own risk.

The check-in process went smoothly, and the agent who worked with us was very friendly. He verified that we filled out our customs form correctly, which was reassuring. Once we had our Sail and Sign cards, we were directed to find a seat in the terminal’s waiting area. If there was a separate waiting area for priority guests, we didn’t see it. We barely had time to use the restrooms in the terminal before they called Platinum, Diamond, FTTF, and Suite guests to start boarding en masse at 11:45. We moved past the embarkation photo area and right before we got onto the gangway, we had to hand our customs forms to agents. Then we were free to board!

After I took a couple pictures Ashley and I immediately walked up the two flights of stairs to deck 5, then proceeded abaft through the casino and Ocean Plaza, then up one more flight to deck 6, then all the way back to our room to drop our stuff off. No pictures yet, as we wanted to make a bee-line up to deck 9 to get lunch.

Ashley and I both decided to get the Ringer from Guy’s Burger Joint (and I threw in a few jalapenos from the toppings bar). The Ringer is your basic cheeseburger with your usual toppings, with a fried onion ring and Guy’s Bourbon and Brown Sugar BBQ sauce. Ashley asked for hers without sauce. This detail is important because after tasting the sauce on my burger, she decided to go back and get a little cup of it. As she was heading back to the table a guy in front of her abruptly decided to change directions and she was soon wearing the cup of sauce all over her shirt. So far we were off to a little bit of a rocky start. This experience made us realize just how narrow and crowded the walkways on the Lido deck can be, and we were extremely cautious throughout the rest of the cruise was we navigated the buffet area. On the plus side, the burgers were fantastic, which was reassuring because I thought the Guy’s burgers were just ok on the Pride.

We decided to go back to the room to see if we would be lucky enough to have received Ashley’s luggage, but it had not arrived. I did take the opportunity to take some pictures of the room.

Our room had a private little entryway with the room next to us, 6344. The entryway had its own door, which was usually open during the day, which was great. By dinnertime we found the door was usually closed. We weren't sure if it was our neighbors or the steward who closed it, but it made things easier when it was open. It did limit hallway noise, though.

Closet space in the room was a little limited, there were only 2 closets so Ashley and I had to get a little creative as we unpacked.

The shower was huge! It wasn't just a corner like in a regular stateroom. We've had similar sized showers in a suite before, but those had sliding doors, so we kept hitting our elbows. This was the best of both worlds, and if it weren't for the huge balcony, it would have been the highlight of the room.

Some other thoughts on the room:

  • We are used to the seizure-inducing bathroom lights that take a second to start to get going, then brightly flicker. In this room the light just turned on when you hit the switch. It's the little things...
  • There weren't any actual bedside lamps, just the fixed reading lamps behind the bed that put out sort of a harsh white light instead of a warm, ambient light.
  • The trash can in the room was comically small.
  • There was no bathroom fan.
  • Overall we really loved the room, and obviously the balcony.

Ashley didn’t want to walk around the ship as BBQ Girl, and we considered just hanging out in the room until her bag came, but I donated the button down shirt I was wearing over my t-shirt and we ventured out. First we stopped by the Sunrise Dining room in the aft of the ship to see where our table was. This was the first-time since our first cruise that we had assigned dining. About a week prior to the cruise I emailed the maître-d to ask for a two-person table in the Sunrise dining room. We walked into the dining room to find the table, but there weren’t any numbers on the tables quite yet, so I just took a picture instead. The upper level of this dining room is for folks with assigned dining, and the lower level is for Your Time Dining. If you have YTD, you check in near the Taste Bar on Deck 5 to keep the hallway area outside the dining room on deck 3 from getting too crowded.

Then we headed over to the Atrium to apply our Carnival gift cards to our account. There was a kiosk on deck 5 but, like on the Pride, it didn’t read our gift cards, so we went down to Guest Services in the Atrium.

The Sunset Dining Room is adjacent to the Atrium, so we wandered in to take a quick look. This is a one-level dining room also for folks with assigned dining.
