Questions about transfer from Sydney International Terminal to Domestic Terminal

flying from US to Cairns in February Quantas lands at Sydney International and then we have a 7 hour layover to get to the Domestic Terminal to continue the flight to Cairns.

Questions: Once we land at the International Terminal, will we have to pick up our bags and bring them through customs and then haul the bags on the shuttle or train to the Domestic Terminal and have to check in again at the Domestic counter and go through security again? How long should be allot to get through customs? How much time should be allot to get from the International Terminal to the Domestic Terminal?

Or does Quantas have way to get our bags off of the International Flight and send the bags directly to the Domestic flight in the other terminal?

Since 7 hours is a long time, we might be able to get an earlier flight to Cairns, but it leaves in 3 hours from our arrival. Is that enough time to get us and our bags through customs and to the domestic terminal and check in?

Qantas has a smooth process for transfers from International to Domestic Terminals. After you collect your luggage and go through Customs, follow signs to submit your luggage for transfer to the Domestic Terminal. You then catch the free Qantas bus to transfer to the Domestic Terminal. Check with Qantas on the minimum time required for transfer. 3 hours used to be plenty of time for transfer, but you need to check current requirements.
