We just did St John and walked to the rapids. It takes about 45 mins at a brisk walk (and we were doing it in a gale!). Just follow the edge of the harbour along the red 'Harbor Passage'.It will take you to an observation platform by the bridges. Then walk down the steps off the platform and under the road bridge and over the train track and along Douglas Ave, then left down Fallsview Ave to more lookout points. This takes another 15mins. There are restrooms there too. Come back up Fallsview Ave and turn left (carrying on along Douglas Ave) to the lights and turn right down Bentley St (which used to be the old portage route round the falls), then you are back to the Harbor Passage. The whole thing is about a 4 1/2 mile round trip and we did it in 2 1/2 hours easily (including 'looking' time). The falls flow fastest halfway between high and low tide, so google the tide tables for the date of your trip.
