Is a 1pm flight from LGA cutting it too close?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

Our original non-stop flight at 2:30pm, was rebooked to a one-stop flight which gets us home several hours later. There is a flight leaving at 1:05pm from LGA which will get us back home about the same time, but I am a little worried about getting from the Gem's dock in NYC to LGA. We are scheduled to dock at 8am. (And we do have travel insurance.) Flying American if that makes a difference.

What do you think? Will we have little problem getting to LGA by 11am - 11:30am on a Saturday in October?

Thanks!

Susan

We live near the airport, and as long as,the ship docks and clears on time, you will have no problem at all. If time is running short, use a porter for your luggage. It makes going thru customs much quicker. We are usually home by 9-9:30,but we don't rush to get off.

Safe sailing

Plenty of time if the ship docks on time. Depending on NYC traffic, it can be anywhere from 25-45 minutes to get from MCT to LGA. We did it on Breakaway in 2015 with private car service that picked us up around 10AM and we were at LGA and in line at security by 11AM for our 12:50PM flight, no issues.

Enjoy your cruise!

LGA is the slowest on Saturdays with fewest # of flights scheduled.

As above, as long as ship is on-time (mostly early, often too early) ... you have plenty of time, to do a sit-down MDR breakfast. If you have priority disembark (i.e. concierge escort off the FWD waiting area to gangway to the down escalators ... Gem does an excellent job with it) - followed by porter services, you will be outside & ready for ground transportation by 9 to 9:30 AM.

We went up the West Side Hwy for a longer but fast route - and got home before 10 AM (northeast Queens, 10+ minutes beyond LGA) in about 30 minutes. Car service booked on the spot on mobile app (not Uber/Lyft) - Carmel - and 7 to 10 minutes pickup, faster than we can walk from inside the terminal - flat rate + tolls + tips. Taxi is metered fare and the line is usually not too long, 5 to 10 minutes on average. Which airline ? FHV and taxi will be dropping you off directly in front of the terminal, unlike arrival.

Check this thread 1 to 2 weeks before sailing in case of changes - unclear if the Delta terminals (C & D and MAT) upgrade will be impacted (and, how) in the next 2 or 3 months ... groundbreaking was announced this month.

Pack & travel light as it will be easier pulling those rollerboards. Also, it appeared the Gem will be calling on Maine first so it should clear CBP before reaching NY, making for a likely quick disembarkation once the gangways are ready & vessel cleared by local authorities.

spidyb - take good care of BA when you sail & give our Roll Call a heads up of any last minute goodies for Halloween. off 14th Ave, on other side of I-678 (not Malba) Last few runs to MCT has us going over the WSB, especially when we leave around 9:15 or 9:30 - zip across I-95 under the "Apartments" & Lower Level onto the HHP. Our BIL's group would zip across on GCP to RJK, across W. 126th to HHP - not much slower & we've done that. Horror was Queensboro & this year, QMT.

Just need watch for those NYSP brown patrol: speed enforcement, bet you've seen them ... even on TN's Bridge (if you get on that to go over to the pier) Happy cruising !

Hey neighbor, we used to live in Clearview (our daughter just got apt there) and now we are on 20th ave, down the block from McDonalds. My husband gets annoyed, but I like to take the train to the pier. We will keep the ship in good shape for you.

Safe sailing

In the worst case scenario where docking embarkation and traffic go against you, cite the "flat tire rule" to check in agent or supervisor if he/she doesn't know and they'll put you on next flight with seats available.

We had an early debarkation on our last cruise on the Breakaway. Debarkation was backed up, it took forever to get off the ship and we would not have made a 1pm flight I don't think. I will say it was a Sunday so only 1/2 of the custom windows were being used and it was a mega ship, but the walk from the ship to the outside took forever If all goes well, you will be fine: Me, I wouldn't take a chance/

1:00 PM is fine.

That is the earliest I would take a flight after arriving back to Manhattan.

One thing I caution people on is that if you do not have TSA Pre Approv the lines could be even longer with the change in electronics that will have to be taken out of the carry on.

We left our stateroom and did self assist (carry own luggage)leaving the cabin at 7:30 am.Took a cab (on a Saturday) and were dropped off at American Terminal B within an hour. Our flight was around 1:00pm so we had lots of time to sit around.
