Rollator Purchase in Barcelona

My mother and I are embarking on a cruise in Barcelona in September. We are arriving the day before embarkation and would like to purchase a light-weight rollator (walker with 4 wheels and a seat) in Barcelona to avoid having to deal with it on our flight from the US. I have asked our hotel concierge for a medical supply store referral, but the information they sent to me was not helpful. Does anyone have experience or suggestions that might help?

What's the difference of having to get it back home after the cruise if purchased in Barcelona or buying it at home and taking it with you ? It gets gate checked both ways.

Does she use one at home now? If not than know that there is a learning curve due to the 4 wheels and hand brakes. Getting comfortable using it while on a moving ship could be a recipe for disaster if she's never used a rollator before.

Another option would be to rent one through either www.Scootaround.com or www.SpecialNeedsatSeas.com as both service the port of Barcelona.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. We planned to leave the rollator at our hotel at the end of our trip, hopefully to be donated to someone who might be able to use it.

I had considered Amazon, but I am not that confident about navigating the Amazon Spain site. I may pursue this route anyway.

I would just take one with you. Easy to gate check, can use it at the airport, and no worries about whether or not you can find one in Barcelona that works for you. I would never depend upon purchase at the port...even within the USA. Take it with you and you don't have to worry.

Are you planning to rent a rollator for use on the ship and ashore? If so, you can rent one for delivery to the hotel, with pick up on the ship at the end of the cruise. You have to use one of the vendors that the ship approves, but usually there's a couple of choices of which one to use.

I traveled several times with Mom who needed walker and never had any issues flying with it. Flight attendants either helped us gate check it once Mom was seated or in most cases found a place to store it onboard if needed to get to restroom. You'll find that the help you get is great when traveling with someone with medical problems. Make sure to put on your flight reservations that she needs wheelchair at airport. That assures that one is waiting when you get off to make connections. DH and I are seniors and pretty mobile but he has breathing issues if we have to go really fast to make connections. We had a 40 minute time between connecting flights in a major airport so I ordered one for him and whrn we got off plane they insisted I get in one also. We would have never made the connection if we had tried to walk. I would definitely take her equipment and ask for wheelchair at airport.

In Spain mobility aids are normally sold in specialist shops, but are not as common as in the US or U.K.

I would definitely take one with you and also order Special Assistance for your mother with the airline. In Barcelona it can be a long walk from the plane.

Barcelona is one of the most disabled friendly city in Europe. I have limited mobility and use a mobility scooter and hardly ever have a problem in Spain.

Thanks, LondonTowner. You have confirmed my suspicion that this will be more difficult than it is in the US. Looks like we'll be bringing the rollator with us.
