Any recent experience with transportation at Kai Tak cruise terminal?

Does anyone have recent experience with transportation from Hong Kong's Kai Tak cruise terminal?

I understand that their are limited choices: a public 16 passenger minibus, taxis and 2 or three private shuttles to malls near subway stations.

How big are the private shuttles and how often do they run? Is there much of a line for taxis? And for the private shuttles and minibus?

Thanks for your assistance

Where are you trying to go to?

There are taxi's and the wait shouldn't be to long assuming your ship is the only one in port.

There were suppose to be shuttle buses to malls, but took a taxi to get on the HO HO Bus near the Star Ferry, we didn't want to waste time going to the mall and then catch the subway. The cost of the taxi was not very expensive. Note that Celebrity had an excursion using the HO HO bus so on the way back, we were able to use the bus that the people on the excursion were using for free. The second day we disembarked and used a private van to the hotel near Ocean Terminal since there were six of us with a lot of luggage.

From the KT pier management about operations and transport options - free WiFi coverage is terminal wide & that's a plus plus, especially as a port visit, could eliminate the need for worrying about roaming data & surprises in paying for data. Many popular places along with MTR station has free WiFi, good for doing quickie email check & web-browing, just avoid updating your iPhone or Google devices or app update, so those would be slow over unsecured links.

KMB Bus Route 5R is new, also the free shuttle to/from nearby ferry pier to cross the Victoria harbor

Private mall shuttles, from what I understand, are typically mid-sized buses - similar to those used by tourist on a day trip.

PMB 16 seaters would look like this (caution: seat sized are designed for "slim" Asians or sit closely & expect to be tight)

Thanks, I had heard that there were often long lines for taxis - I will check and see if there is any other ship in port with us.

Loeb, did you book the private van ahead of time? How did you go about doing that?

We booked the van in advance through Royal American Limousine Services. They were good, arrived on time without any problems. However, it was not cheap. You might look at other alternatives by doing a google search or try TripAdvisors.

How much was the taxi from K-T terminal to the Star Ferry terminal ? Was it the one by the Ocean Terminal mall? Trying to figure how much HK$ I will need.

Thanks in advance.

Here is a taxi fare calculator web site for taxi fare estimation:

Celebrity had a shuttle that took us to the Kowloon Airport Express train station. There you can check your luggage 24 hrs ahead of time (our flight was not until after midnight). After spending some time in a museum, we took the train to our hotel, just across from the airport, where we stayed on a day rate until our flight departed.

The shuttle was a very modest charge and the train to the airport was very cheap.

For HK taxi, you want to get into a red (color) taxi - only a handful of them are equipped with credit card terminal, and are said to be offline at times. Practically, drivers welcome and expect to be paid in local HKD / currencies.

Inside KTCT - there is Currency Exchange on the ground level at the Exit Hall for arriving pax - check the bilingual directory. Signage should be identical or similar to this - exchange rates are posted, including any transaction or handling fees, etc. For a stopover for a day, convert a practical amount as needed - once you are in town, you can find an ATM (easiest) - banks will exchange major currencies, upon presentation of passport/proper ID's.

Bonus info on taxi in HK - http://www.taxihongkong.com/

There are free WiFi inside the cruise terminal - use it to "Goggle" visitors and tourism info on your smartphone and/or tablets/iPads, etc.

We have pre booked with China car service group to pick us up when we disembark and take us to Hong Kong macau ferry for turbo jet to macau at a fee of $99 which we paid by credit card. A bit more than a taxi fare but they should be waiting for us with a sign and we won't have to worry about cash, struggling with luggage or waiting in line for a taxi.

Thanks in advance.

Was docked at KT on November 3rd & 4th and took a taxi to the Pennusula Hotel near the Star Ferry terminal where the fare was $90.00 HKD.

There is a money exchange just before the taxi queue. Line moved quite fast and efficient plus the taxi attendant wrote our destination down in Mandarin for the driver plus it had return instructions for the trip back...

All easy peasy... Worst part was it's a lot of walking from the ship to the exit and back.

There are 2 currency exchange positions on either side of the main exit to the buses and taxis. Sometime people just queue up at one counter and overlook the other one which may be less crowded.

Also, if you are using the courtesy shuttle from the terminal to go town, the first stop will be at the Kwun Tong metro station (the 2nd stop being Diamond Hill station). There is a currency exchange shop right by the bus stop area.

Arriving at Kai Tak on QM2 18 March. Staying 3 days at Novotel, Nathan Rd. The taxis at Kai Tak cruise terminal, are they metered or fixed price to hotel?

We were in HK last year, but flew in, traffic is horrendous.

All licensed taxis in HK are metered as per regulation and a printed receipt issued at the end of the trip, showing the fares & any applicable surcharges, etc. - ask for it if necessary and keep that for your record, in case of any dispute or overcharge. HK Police will and do investigate complaints by visitors & tourists of any suspected abuses, etc. Take a smartphone picture, discretely of the operator's posted ID/license and vehicle's license plate, when in doubt.

For those planning to visit the "Giant Budda," especially via the popular cable car by going to Lantau ... which is often good to do on a clear day, if going to the airport nearby for a late afternoon or evening flight - please be advised that Ning Ping 360 has announced last week, that the scenic cable car will be CLOSED down for 5 months, starting 9th of January, 2017 for about 5 months - scheduled to be completed & reopen by June, 2017 - to replace the cable ropes & other maintenance. From Tung Chung's MTR station, there are scheduled bus services to take visitors up to NP360 and back, inexpensive & easy - in addition, to taxis serving the island (higher fares, of course). Announcement is here - please refer to the official website, and as always, check the weather & cable car's operating status before leaving from the "city" on either side of the island and/or from the cruise terminals on the day of ...

As of this week, MTR's newest South Island (subway train) line is open, from the key station @ Admiralty on HK Island, near Central & the stop for the Peak Train - transfer and it's one stop to "Ocean Park" Station (above ground) and one more stop to "Wong Chuk Hang" Station, nearest to Aberdeen Harbour, once a fishing village and the "Jumbo Floating Seafood Restaurant" ... also, popular with first time visitors - that's about a 5 minute taxi ride or 20 minutes of walking, or transfer to a surface bus to get there & back.

We had five of us plus our luggage when we arrived HK Kai Tak Cruise Terminal in December. We used Uber and it was the easiest thing to do. Had to go up to the 2nd floor to meet the driver, not at the same level as the taxis.[/

After seeing this post, I googled uber in HK and saw an article saying uber had been taken over by another company.

We will be 4 adults plus luggage and uber would be ideal.

Has anyone had a very :) recent experience with uber?

We will be spending a few days at a hotel in Kowloon.

Thanks
