There seem to be quite a few hotels in the area of the port . . .can you just walk into the port and to the ship or do you need to take a cab / shuttle? How large is the port? Please advise - thanks !!

It is possible to walk through the Riverwalk mall to both terminals (as reported on these boards by others). All hotels in the French Quarter, Central Business District, and warehouse district are easy access to the port by cab (or walking for those closest). The cab fare is a set $8pp to the port.

I have the Hilton Riverside booked. Everything I have found is that it is an easy walk through the mall to get to the port.

I have a rental from Avis and I'm returning it to that Hilton and everyone assured me it's an easy walk through the Riverwalk Mall with the bonus of a Cafe Du Monde being in there for a quick beignet.
