Eurodam Alaska Oversold?

Our TA contacted us today and said the Alaska cruise we are book on is oversold in our suite class and they are offering some incentives to move to a different sailing? Why would they oversell a cruise? Its not like they don't know the inventory ahead of time?

Cruise lines count on a few people canceling at the last minute.

This happened a few times several years on the Maasdam's Canada/New England cruises.

And it happened on our Veendam cruises out of Tampa a number of years ago.

We were never contacted about changing our plans as we would not be able to change Flights at the last minute.

In the past there have been some extremely good deals to change to another date or ship. As KK notes Canada-New England used to be the one, but Alaska also.

Haven't heard much about this for some years, so HAL appears to be back to selling some categories very well on some cruises. Explains the surreal pricing on some Alaska cruises this season.

Is there also a large group that is sailing with you at the same time - the Eurodam Alaska seems to be very popular with large groups.

Search for the thread that posts some of the large groups, and which dates and ships which others have been able to figure out. If you find this is the case for your dates, you might want to take them up on their offer to change dates.

Unfortunately due to non refundable air fare and scheduled vacation time it would be impossible for us to change dates. I would think that would be the case for most folks.

I've heard of folks getting 50% or more off a cruise and their airfare covered for moving to another sailing. Sometimes an upgrade to a suite in addition!

Some years ago we got a really terrific deal to change to another cruise, including airfare reimbursements for original flights with HAL. In part what you can get may depend on how many others are willing to accept the original offer. Our offer was about 30 days before the cruise.

I should say that when this offer occurred we were newly retired so could change our dates - what a WONDERFUL retirement gift it was. I do believe that our opportunity was exceptional in terms of what we got for what we originally paid. AND, it went from a 14 day cruise to a 32 day cruise (half of a Grand Voyage) and $1,000 each credit.

We do not expect to EVER get such a great offer again! We were very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time.

A few years back we also got terrific deal to change to another cruise. We live close to port so didn't have to worry about flights. We were refunded for our hotel (not booked thru HAL) and were also given a 7 day Alaska cruise for what we paid for a 3 day Pacific Coastal. We were also upgraded from OV to verandah at no cost to us.
