Catalina Island - what's the best thing to do there

Recommended Posts

Nice. How was the weather? I read on some other thread that they no longer have lobster on elegant night. Well except for a surcharge. Is this correct?

Carnival?

Scallop appetizer and a seafood ravioli have replaced the lobster. Last Inspiration cruise I ordered two scallop appetizers as an entree.

Last time, we had the "submarine" underwater tour combined with the island tour. This time, we're taking a "Taste of Catalina" tour.

Next time (assuming we do this cruise again), we'll either do that "Amazing Race" thing or not get off the boat. Most of the Catalina excursions are snorkeling, surfing, hiking and other activities that aren't our thing. We're not alone in this: last time, there were a lot of people who were clearly there for Ensenada and treated Catalina as another Sea Day; when you see people on Lido getting into the hot tub with a Mai Tai at 8:30 AM, it's not likely they're going anywhere.

We are cerebrating our 1 year wedding anniversary and we will stop in Catalina and Ensenada in January. What are some fun things to do there that I may have missed out on previous trips? We have been to the casino, and kayaking. (With my Daughters not my husband) But I wanna do something super fun and exciting. There will be another couple joining us for the cruise, so I would like some ideas to toss around to them also.

Thanks

 I know this is an older post but since I found it asking the same question originally, I thought I'd go ahead and share my thoughts...

I'm actually a first time cruiser and it's my first time in Catalina but I'm all about planning ahead so this is what I'm planning to do.

  • renting a bike at Browns Bikes ($20 for the day)
  • renting a kayak for a couple hours ( w/ coupon $20)

$5 Off at Wet Spot Rentals!

  • getting a massage and pedi @ Island Breeze Spa & Salon (kind of stupid expsensive but they have coupons and deals all over the web, especially for couples... and I DESERVE it!)
  • spending the rest of my day sampling food n booze at a couple places I found to be highly recommended on various travel sites

  1. Luau Larry's (fruity drinks and yummy nibbles & just steps to the beach!)
  2. The Lobster Trap (LOBSTER ROLLS/LOBSTER TACOS & LOCAL BEER... need I say more??!)

Just an FYI... I discovered you can create an itinerary at www.catalinachamber.com and you can email it to yourself directly from the page. Plus they have a mountain of info on what to on Catalina Island. Awesome sauce. Now ask me about Ensenada ;)

UPDATE: Going to Catalina Sea Spa instead. Better deals on better packages...

There is "the Amazing Race" Catalina that you can do with the golf cart. You solve puzzles and learn facts about Catalina.

We did this in Santa Barbara a couple of years ago. It was lots of fun!

When we visited Catalina, we went to the visitor info center (it's on the ship map) and got a hiking map. Did a really nice loop up in the hills.
