Perth or Fremantle?

After a killer flight, where would you spend two nights? Clearly, either can be visited from the other.

Having been in both last year, I would probably say Perth. Nothing wrong with either, and yes, the train runs between the two.

I love both, probably better use of time to stay in Perth.

I imagine that's where you'll land, so 1st night, whole of second day in Perth, head off to Freo earlyish day three.

Fremantle is the port for Perth and an easy 1/2hour train ride from Perth, trains probably every 15 minutes or so either way.

Lot more choices of hotels etc in Perth which is also closer to the airport (20 minutes in a taxi

You can also use the free CAT buses to get around the city to see the attractions including Kings park which you should visit for the views of the city.

There is even a cat bus in Fremantle that leaves from the train station which is convienent to.

Just ask a local "g'day mate where do I catch a free Cat bus" and they will direct you. Most also run from outside the railway station but take several routes around the city.

We stayed at Miss Maud's in Perth. The hotel is not fancy but still good, but the restaurant is fantastic. We ate all our meals there. Don't miss it.

It is easy to get to Freemantle from Perth. There is a train that goes there.

We had two full days there and did a wine cruise up river that was great, as well as a cruise down to Freemantle with tour of the city.

We took a tour of Freemantle ini connection with a river cruise from Perth. Also, we visited the Prison in Freemantle. As a part of that tour, we took the trolley in Freemantle, which takes you through quite a lot of the city. The city is small, with Perth being larger.

Perth seemed a bit more modern, but it appears to have grown more than Freemantle. You can see both in one day. The park in Perth is excellent. Neither place made me think of such architecture.

Fremantle has retained a lot of old buildings so would be the better of the two cities. It is also very compact so easy to see in a couple of hours.

The Fremantle Prison, built by convict labour (from England) in the 1800's and although in use until recent times, is little changed and now a major tourist attraction. Apparently the tunnels under the prison (Toured by boat) are popular.

Miss Maud's was great. It is convenient for sightseeing Perth and has a fantastic restaurant. We stayed there and had all our meals there. If you don't stay there, be sure to go there for a meal.

We disembarked the Emerald Princess in Fremantle and took the train from there into Perth. We also stayed at Miss Maud's. As the previous post said, it is not fancy but the location is very convenient to the CAT bus, the pedestrian shopping street, the rail station, and the riverfront. We only ate the included breakfast there but it was wonderful. We stayed 3 days after our cruise and on one day took a very scenic and enjoyable river cruise to Fremantle then rode the CAT bus around there before returning to Perth. We loved Perth and especially enjoyed strolling along the riverfront.

Thanks for posting your question - I just did on our roll call and decided to check the ports pages. I've decided to stay in Perth and will spend 3 nights.

Now to search for a place in Sydney. :)

Isn't that pretty much the original question (ok 2 nights as opposed to 3 or 4, but really?)?

We had that situation- 3 nights- and stayed in Perth.

Book to stay in Perth city - much more choice of accommodation etc and you can go down to Fremantle for a day visit either by boat one way or train both ways.

Our Swan river is a great way to travel down to the port city and see the sights etc along the way.

Like Vietnamese food - try the Viet Hoa in William Street, Northbridge - easy walk from most hotels etc in Perth and very popular - don't forget to get a bottle of wine or some beer along the way as it is not licenced and they do not charge corkage either.

Mantra on Murray is a great place to stay in the centre of Perth, close to the train station which will take you to Fremantle, with lots of little Cafes close by and an easy walk to Elizabeth Quay or to Northbridge (lots of restaurants there).

For the most incredible views of Perth there is no better place to see it from than Kings Park -which also has the most amazing gardens proudly showing Western Australia's unique flora. A cheap ferry ride across to South Perth is also a great way to see the city skyline. Also as others have said a cruise on the beautiful Swan River(either down to Fremantle or up to the Swan Valley) is a lovely way to see our city. If you catch the train to Freo you can get off at Cottesloe, where it is only a short walk to the world famous Cottesloe Beach.

Fremantle is WA's cultral precinct and where you will find most of our historic buildings including our oldest surviving building the Roundhouse which was originally a goal. Freo is full of restaurants, old pubs, shops and if you're there on the weekend, markets.

I'm with you and also booked Freo. Actually got a nice 2 bedroom apartment on Air BNB with a front garden area leading to pool. We have booked a car so will be out and about exploring. I think Freo will be a change from being in a 'city' area. I also noticed your from Baltimore MD...where about it you don't mind my asking. My relatives are from Glenburnie & Pasadena MD. Have you seen the knoll lighthouse at the Harbour? My uncle Tom was a young boy living on that lighthouse and now his daughter and nieces are the committee members who manage the preservation of it. Fremantle (Freo in local-speak) is simply the port for Perth. Definitely a Perth hotel would be preferable. Depending on what you like, something like one of the hotels at the Burswood complex - https://www.crownperth.com.au/hotels - would be a great option as you are in a top location, right next to the river, looking over towards the city, and it's a convenient taxi ride from the airport. At Burswood, which is also home to the casino, you can pick up the HoHo bus to tour around the city. A must, if you have time, is Kings Park, a beautiful park on a hill overlooking the river and the city. I would also recommend lunch at C Restaurant, a revolving restaurant on St George's Terrace in the city. The food is great, and you get a terrific view of the city, the river and the hills. Perth (and Fremantle is part of the metropolitan area) has a population of just over 2 million, but is hugely spread out, about 150 kilometres from north to south, and doing the revolving restaurant for lunch does give you a bit of an idea of the sprawl of the city. Have fun.

If not taking the train, what other affordable options are there to travel between Perth & Freemantle? (I have a mobility impairment and my DW would have trouble schlepping all of our luggage around.)

The distance is around 20 Kms and should cost no more than around $30 - $40 AUD.
