Communicating Onboard?

My DH and I use our mobile phones to find each other in Costco. How do you communicate with each other onboard?

It would help to know the ship and cruise line, because specific details vary ship to ship.

I've seen families with Walkie Talkies

Our experience with walkie-talkies has been poor. Once we are separated by a few decks, many times they did not work at all.

Some cruise lines have a chat ap that you can use onboard on your smart phone - check your cruise line's website to find out if they have this. Otherwise, it is easiest just to verbally let each other know where you are going and plan to meet for lunch and then meet back in the cabin before cocktail hour if you are not doing something together.

Disney cruise gives you a pair of wireless phones onboard to be use anywhere on the ship. The only problem with that is that you get quite a few wrong calls or butt dials or kids playing with the phones.

Most cruise have internet option, we use whatsapp on phone to talk. It is great when you have a family reunion on the cruise... hard to communicate with the group without it unless you want to go to 15+ cabins and post sticky notes.

Just tell each other where you're going to be...it's not hard to find each other! Hubby knows I'll be at the pool, and I know he'll be in the casino, if we're not together. If we can't find each other, we know the cabin is the place to look1

Honestly, you won't have any issue with losing the rest of your party!

I will take a scanner to listen to FRS/GMRS radio chatter on the ship. It is always good for a few laughs. In port, I listen to the activity on the dock. I enjoy listening to the hustle and bustle while I lounge sipping a drink.

On my way to and from work, I listen to the golf course cart girls, constructions sites, car dealerships, rental car companies etc... most of the people have no idea their communication is wide open. I have heard CC with CCV communicated by radio. The businesses are technically violating the FCC rules by using FRS/GMRS radios.

My group is 16 ppl., in 7 cabins, on 3 decks. So, sure, I'd love to have a way to reach out to them all at once to say, "hey, how about lunch together today?" Running around w/ sticky notes is ok for one-way info, but seems inefficient for a group conversation…

Stateroom phones usually have voice message capability, though that might take a couple of hours of advance planning.

16 people yelling into walkie talkies trying to line up a mutually acceptable lunch time and place might be convenient for them (they would wind up yelling to attempt to handle the poor reception between decks) but not so great for their fellow passengers.

We have a small magnetic white board on the wall. Leave notes. Wife goes her way and I go mine. We may happen to run into each other during the day. Might be breakfast, lunch or somewhere else. Every evening we have dinner together and catch up with each other regarding our day. After 57 years of being together, it does give us something new to talk about.;)

I think respective to it just being two people, you can just say hey this is where I will be. In the past with my friends we all knew where each other liked to hang out so if we weren't together I knew where to find them. My husband and I will probably be together most of the time but I am sure he will find a bar or bar tender that he likes and sticks around there so I will always know where to find him. Me I am usually by the pool or on the serenity deck.

We don't.

Occasionally we run into each other and wake up in the morning together.

That's why our group always has dinner together. To talk about our day and discuss our next day. In over 10 cruises with friends and family it has always worked great. And, like others have said, there is a thing called a telephone. I make up a list before we go with everyone's name. I give the cabin number and how you would dial it from the cabin. For example Baja deck might be 8 so Baja 508 would be 8508. I list everyone in the cabin just in case someone only knows someone else by the male person in the cabin.

NCL has the iConcierge app which allows users to message each other without using the ship's WiFi.

The NCL app uses the ship's WiFi to send messages, retrieve your account or make reservations.

But the user DOES NOT have to have the ship's WiFi package in order to use the app.
