Ms411 Posted July 26, 2017 #5 Share Posted July 26, 2017 All Royal Caribbean ships dock at Crown Bay. You can walk to Emerald Beach (about a mile on flat sidewalk). There are only a few restaurants and bars at that dock - Island Flavor and Tickles. Good fish and chips at Salt & Pepper in Nisky Center. You can see Nisky on Google Maps. They're working on opening a brew pub near there but no date yet. There's a public tennis court nearby. You can get fresh sugar cane and coconuts at a little stand about a block outside the gate. Sweet Corner is what it's called.

Ms411 Posted July 27, 2017 #8 Share Posted July 27, 2017 For Carniva and Princess ship passengers. You can take the tram to Paradise Point. If you're in good shape you can walk the steep road up to Paradise Point and enjoy the view. You can tour the St Johns Bay Rum small batch factory for free M-F. It's near Beni Iguana Sushi Bar. You can try the locally brewed beer, Rock City, at Tap and Still restaurant. You can discover regional music by visiting The Music Shoppe II. You can take an island tour from a taxi driver at the dock. You can visit the new Pirate and Shipwreck museum. Plenty of shops for browsing. Plenty of restaurants to try. NCTribeFan Posted August 12, 2017 #14 Share Posted August 12, 2017 You can find the cruise ship schedule on the vinow dot com website. Their website is a very useful resource for St Thomas as well as the other USVI. There's even a coupon section for those of us who prefer DIY excursions. villauk Posted August 19, 2017 #19 Share Posted August 19, 2017 We dock at Havensight on Celebrity Eclipse (according to your link - thanks :)) on Christmas Eve. We've never visited the island previously and would welcome advice about staying near the port - is there enough to do close enough to the ship - or do we need to take a tour? There are also ship excursions such as St John on your Own. Is that a better option than staying on St Thomas where we are docking? TIA :). Ms411 Posted August 19, 2017 #20 Share Posted August 19, 2017 If this is your first time you should take an island tour so you can see the beauty of the island and take lots of pictures. Why visit a place and not see any of it or experience it? You can take a tour through your ship or with one of the taxi drivers at the dock. Depending on the tour you choose you can spend an hour or so at a beautiful beach as part of your tour.

The reason I asked is the amount of transport questions concerning St John on CC, so I wondered if that island contained more to do and see than St. Thomas? We usually take tours of the islands as we are only happy to spend an hour or so on a beach (not the full day). Additionally, I wondered if there was enough to keep us busy around the port area or did we need to take a tour to venture further afield - we don't want to spend hours walking around jewellery shops either ;p. We tend not to take ship tours, but instead book with private independent tour operators, especially as we have 3 teens in our party ;).
Ms411 Posted August 20, 2017 #22 Share Posted August 20, 2017 Many of the people asking about St John have been to St Thomas before so want to see more of the area. They are going to St John mostly to see the beautiful Trunk Bay beach with its snorkel trail maintained by the NPS. You keep referring to "things to do" which is kind of vague. Most of the activities take place in or on the water, but there is a zipline (not close to the port), botanical gardens (not close to port), jeep tours, hiking, horseback riding, maybe bicycling and other activities I may have forgotten or not know about. If you want a private tour there are many good ones, but with teens you might want to contact Coco Brown at taxicocobrown1967@yahoo.com.
