American river cruises v ocean cruises

Probably for many reasons, but I think a large part is the American crew that has to be paid much larger wages than foreign ocean cruise workers. Also, there are fewer passengers to cover the costs of operation.

That would be the big one. With Ocean cruises they pay whatever the wages are of the country of registry. With European river cruises, they use loopholes in EU laws where they basically subcontract various parts of the ships out to Eastern European firms. With U.S. river cruises, they have to build them in America, crew them with Americans, follow all labor laws of whatever state they're based out of, and follow all U.S. Coast Guard regulations for passenger vessels. Plus, people are willing to pay the prices and they can't keep up with demand.

Perhaps another reason why the river boat cruise are more expensive is because:

1. Beer and Wine is complementary at lunch and dinner

2. There are complementary excursions in the form of a hop on hop off bus at every port.

3. There is usually a happy just before dinner where different drinks are discounted

We enjoy both ocean cruises and river cruises. Find the river cruise more relaxing and less hectic so we try to do one of each a year.

Never saw any bag checks, so You could have brought alcohol on board at any stop. Always had full glass of wine after dinner to take with us. Did 23 day MPS - NOLA cruise. They just scanned Your card when leaving and upon return to boat.

American River cruises that are registered in the US are required to hire workers who live in the US. So... they have to pay American wages (much higher than non-American). That's pretty much it in a nutshell :)
