New Maximum Speed for Ships in the Gulf of St. Lawrence

Canada's Ministry of Transport has imposed a temporary maximum speed of 10 kts on ships over 20m in the western Gulf of St. Lawrence because of the extraordinarily high number of dead right whales which have appeared this summer, many of them showing trauma from a blow. This will affect commercial shipping, including cruise ships, many of which travel at 17 to 20 Kts, and could affect cruise line schedules. The limit will likely be lifted after the right whales migrate south in September and October.
