I retire in 2.5 years and I'm already thinking about a retirement cruise. My husband will still be working, so we can't take anything longer than a couple of weeks, but I'd like to plan something very special for the fall of 2018.

What did you do for cruising when you retired?

Why did you decide to retire when you did?

I have the option to retire in April. However, were I to do so, I'd make about 20% less per month. Part of me says it's more important to enjoy my retirement for as long as I can rather than get more money. In either case, I'll be earning enough to live on.

What made you decide it was time?

I've found myself and others going off topic in multiple threads and talking about RVing, especially since we can't cruise now, and RVing is a great way to still travel while being safely distant from others.

I wasn't sure where to put this thread, and landed on this 55+ forum, as it feels most appropriate, with so many RVers and full-time RVers in that age range. I'm not a member yet, but PapaFej is. If the mods feel there is a better place for this, I have no objection to it being moved.

Anyway, I hope that this can be a place where those of us who love both cruising and RVing can have friendly conversations.

I was a big cruise fan in the first marriage, so much so that I had been saving up in a special account to cruise 7 nights 2-3 times a year in retirement. Those cruises would have been balconies on RCCL, NCL and Celebrity. In my second marriage, the spouse is a committed non cruiser. Now I have agreed as a compromise to cruise, solo, only four times once retired, probably in the first 2 years, and then hang up the deck shoes. I have already been on a ship to all seven continents so my plan is to do 12 to 24 nights each in inside cabins on Oceania, Azamara, Seabourn and Silversea, thus going out in a premium cruise blaze of glory to maybe hit the Panama Canal, Suez Canal and other highlights. Thoughts or suggestions on this plan are appreciated as I am probably not the first in such a mixed marriage.

Now that arthritis has set in, it kills my knees to go up and down stairs. Is there anyone here that has that same problem? If so, what OTC cream do you use to help relieve the pain? What have you had the best results with? On the ship, if I'm just going up or down a deck or two, I'd rather take the stairs than to wait on an elevator. I just can't go as fast as I used to. Is there any chance the COVID disaster could have a positive impact on cruising in the long term? Assuming the vaccines prove to be effective, could a Norovirus vaccine soon follow leveraging the techniques learned from the COVID vaccine development and fast tracking approval?

Related to this, are we soon to see a new definition of a nude cruise? A nude cruise will be redefined as being a face mask optional cruise. Has anyone considered a potential increase in Norovirus outbreaks with the increased use of face masks? I believe a mask worn every day on a cruise will soon become a handy virus storage bin as I walk around constantly adjusting my mask with my hands and handing the bugs off to fellow cruisers.

I plan on getting the vaccine. I do not want to get COVID nor do I want to infect anyone. But that also applies to Norovirus and a lot of other communicable diseases. Please let me decide how much risk I am willing to take in order to cruise. And don't create new problems by becoming focused on one disease.

We have cancelled our scheduled cruises through the end of the year - 2020. We were slated to board the ill fated Ruby Princess in Australia on April 4 and missed that one by a hair. We were anticipating the cruise back home after several weeks on land, but barely made it out of Australia to the US on one of the few remaining flights between Sydney and the US.

We are able to keep ourselves safe by practicing frequent hand washing and sanitizing - thus breaking the most prevalent method of Covid-19 transmission - hand to mouth/face. But, too many people don't wash their hands and too many travel logistics are beyond our control.

We have cruises booked through early 2022, but do not plan to leave the US or step on a cruise ship until there is a widespread vaccine and treatment for Covid-19.

How about you? When will you be willing to chance it?

Am sure there are many others in the “same boat” - we are recently retired and about two years ago got into the cruise mode - were very excited about it - had both worked diligently for many years - hoping not too many more cancellations in our future - and that we will both stay healthy- just venting!

For those of you who are already planning to cruise again, are you booking flights? How?

Have you booked cruises that require a flight to embarkation or from disembarkation, or are you sticking to drive to ports?

If you're going to need a flight, how and when will you book it in case the cruise is cancelled or in case you decide it's not safe to travel even though the cruise will sail?

My problem is that except for EZ Air (that some cruise lines don't offer), refundable flights are very much more expensive than non-refundable ones. But waiting until the last minute to book also has been very expensive.

I just booked my 10 day San Francisco to Alaska cruise leaving July 5, 2021. I am a solo traveler who has never cruised from San Francisco and has never been to Alaska! I have been on this ship before, the Carnival Miracle, but with Covid and "the new normal" its hard to know what to expect. If you'd care to email, my address is: win95gal@iquest.net - tips for Alaska weather in July or if you might be going on the same cruise or general conversation to find common ground would be great topics to start with.

Our passports expired spring 2020, and already have had 3 cruises cancelled, the latest one January 2021. We were also looking at a cruise for November 2021, but right now that one has been listed as "not available". We have pushed the next cruise to January 2022, but we are getting to that "advanced" age and not sure what our future holds for our health. Do we go ahead and hope for the best and renew our passports...maybe for just one cruise that really doesn't justify the cost or does anything think cruise lines will insist on having it. We do have the Enhanced licenses...that are accepted documentation for cruises, but the Custom guy told us one time they hate those. Or do we just call it a day and reserve the local Best Western

First and foremost: I'd like to stipulate that literally any personal concern expressed on an internet forum dedicated to cruising is a First World Problem.

My specific concern here is as First-Worldly as it gets. I apologize for the length of this post, but I'd really appreciate help from those with experience.

That said, I've been a saver since I was a young child. Indeed, when the ice cream truck would come around, and all the kids would run into their houses to grab money, I'd pull the plug from my piggy bank, look inside, and 9 of 10 times, close it back up and just wait until the other kids were done with their snacks before we started playing again.

All my adult life, I've penny-pinched and saved. Hubby had no savings when we met, but quickly adapted and became a saver/investor. We've maxed out pre-tax contributions since our 20s. We've put money into other investments and savings accounts with every paycheck.

Now, Hubby has retired (my own career ended due to family/extended family needs in the 90s). The kids are grown (youngest graduates HS in May). One has already graduated college and started his own career and retirement investments. College expenses for the younger two are covered with what we've saved and invested since they were babies. The one who just turned 21 started her own investment account at 19 and is about to open her first 401(k) now that she's old enough.

All that is to say that I am very good at the saving/investing and being frugal mindset. Now that it's almost time to spend that money, I'm having a hard time. I love putting money away. The thought of actually spending it freaks me out, even though this time of our life is exactly what we've been saving it for. It is largely meant for Bucket-List style travel (the pension more than takes care of every day expenses). Thankfully, we pulled a significant chunk from two investments we've had since the 90s and put it into cash last week before the market tanked. That money is still sitting in an account, so I'm okay with it, but when it comes time to pay for next fall's travel, I might freeze. We did pull enough to also cover the taxes on gains, of course.

So, wise folks who have gone before us, do any of you have any tips for helping change mindsets? I know full well that the expenses for which we will use this money are exactly why we sacrificed and saved it instead of having the lifestyle our colleagues had the last 30 years. I just can't wrap my brain around the spending mindset.

	Any advice?

As I approach 70 and am still an avid cruiser, there are certain things that I used to think were almost mandatory or things that I would obsess about prior to the cruise. I do still obsess about cabin location and whether there is a wrap-around promenade, but beyond that I'm pretty well satisfied by most any day on the ocean. I no longer feel the need to.....

Be the first on or off the ship. As long as I get on before the ship sails, I'm good.

Attend every production show. I find most of them annoyingly over amplified anyway.

Use a lounger on the Melanoma Deck. I enjoy a lounger on the promenade much more.

Get off the ship in every Caribbean port. Been there, and they all start to look alike anyway.

Use ship excursions. Some of my best days have been walking around the port city and discovering a small coffee shop or cafe to enjoy. Beats marching to the tour guide's clock on a crowded excursion bus.

Eat evening meals in the MDR. I find it much more relaxed to eat breakfast and lunch in the MDR, and then have a light evening meal in the buffet. Frees up a lot of m y time in the evening also.

To a youngster, I probably sound like an old curmudgeon, but one of the beauties of cruising is that you are free to enjoy the cruise and the ship in your own way.

	How about you?

Hi- I am seriously thinking of retiring in January 2020 (I will be 65, my husband 72-we live in New Jersey) and have always wanted to go hiking in New Zealand (rent a car and travel around 3 weeks-hiking and site seeing). We were originally thinking of breaking up the flight by visiting my daughter in San Francisco for a few days on the way out and maybe stopping briefly in Hawaii on the way back. I have lots of miles on Alaska airlines to use. However after a wonderful cruise experience on the Noordam in Alaska this summer we are rethinking this. Ideally we'd like to cruise to or from New Zealand from the mainland US as a means of getting to or from New Zealand. We prefer our own independent land tour so do not want to sail around New Zealand. Visiting islands in the Pacific would be wonderful but primarily we think it would be easier on our backs than flying and it would be exciting to cross the Pacific.

Cruise ships change areas of the world they sail in at different times of the year-Is it possible to find an inexpensive cruise that crosses the Pacific from the west coast? Or other advice you could give? Ideally we'd like to sail in the winter or spring which is summer or fall in NZ. Thanks for any help you can give us.

My wife and I are both over 55 and take a good number of Rx meds on a daily basis. For past trips of all type (not just cruises) we’ve always taken a few extra days of all our meds, just in case. But with the Corona Virus dominating the news, this time it seems to be different. We are about to embark on an 8 night Caribbean cruise out of Ft. Lauderdale next week (we’re flying to FLL a few days prior to sailing). The cruise line has notified us that they are being quite proactive to avoid infection. However there are no guarantees. We want to try to be prepared in the event that someone on the cruise gets sick and our ship is quarantined for an extended time. We’d like to ovoid going “nuts” overthinking this & possibly upsetting our enjoyment of the cruise. We could just do as always & bring enough for a few extra days. We could bring a 30 day supply of each, though that comes with its own problems. I’d like to hear what others are planning to do.

I'm laughing at the threads on the Ask a Cruise Question and on the Royal Caribbean boards which espouse the position that old people shouldn't be allowed to cruise because if they get sick, they tend to get very sick, and they may overwhelm the on-board medical facilities.

"Suggestions RCL needs to do to get people cruising again" Solution: Ban passengers in higher risk categories (age, diabetes, smokers, asthma, autoimmune diseases, etc.) for the foreseeable future. The categories I listed are just possibilities. Ultimately scientists/doctors would have to release a list of categories/conditions that would prohibit going on a cruise ship. The argument was that they ban babies under 6 months so they should ban old people.

"9 ways cruising will be different when it starts up again"

Solution: restrictions on who can travel. Don't let old people travel because they tend to be sicker than young people.
