From your past experience, which location and time worked best for your favorite FOD meetups? The champagne bar? Martini bar? Piano bar? The disco? Craft beer bar? Main lobby bar? Pool bar? Etc.

Did it matter to you if there was no music playing? If there was music playing, did it make your introductions awkward and your conversations difficult?

I'm just curious. In case I don't like the location of my next FOD meeting, I would like suggestions for future request changes.

Any other LGBTQ cruisers on this cruise? My husband and I were originally booked for the 2019 cruise but, due him having his ankle replacement surgery, we rebooked the cruise for 2020. Well, with the pandemic we then lifted and shifted the cruise to September 2021. With the cruise being cancelled due to no sailings into or out of Canada until February 2022, we recently lifted and shifted our cruise again to September 2022, only having to pay 1 extra day, prorated at our 2019 rate, keeping our perks (premium beverage package, wifi, gratuities, and OBC), and as a bonus, were able to secure the same Aqua Class stateroom.

Doing a solo out of Tampa. Will it be easy to meet other gay people on board? Is the staff gay friendly? Other passengers? I can leave with a 100% solo cruise with no contacts, just curious of your experience past cruisers. Never been on this ship or cruise out of this port.

I don't want this to sound like a rant, but it kinda sorta is. Has anyone noticed the influx of unfriendly gay couples on cruises? I mean I can sort of understand why a lot of gay couples are unfriendly or maybe dismissive. Maybe they are on a honeymoon, or just want a vacation together without any other men in the way, but it just sucks when you try to interact with other gay men on a "straight" cruise, and they just put their nose in the air at you.

Maybe it has to do with the cruise line? I was on a Carnival cruise about 2 weeks a go out of Jacksonville, FL. I saw very few gay couples, but the ones I did see, they were just all snobbish and dismissive. I just thought to myself "Umm guys this is a Carnival cruise, don't know where the snobbish attitude is coming from". Who knows, maybe I booked the cruise for insecure gay couples? Maybe Carnival specializes in a different type of gay? It was a shame. The LGBT get together, NO ONE showed up except me and one other gay man. Of course we were both single and we chatted for a while, but he turned out to be a weirdo....Im guessing there just isnt a lot of gay men who travel with Carnival....and of course its easy to figure out why.....

I went on a Norwegian cruise in 2015 and I met the coolest group of gay people. We had a group of us who got together every night, a couple times for dinner, it was the coolest thing ever. No one felt insecure or stuck up....it was awesome....but idk, this last cruise, just was bad.

So I'm probably going to be told its Carnival...and Im sure thats a big reason why.

I was booked on the maiden voyage and didn’t make it...a big mistake on my part. Now I’m looking for a special trip in Sept 2022. Although it’s way off the Queen is one of my options along with a river cruise on the Rhine or maybe something land based.

i would appreciate feedback on the Queen....and as I will be traveling alone would a crossing be worth the time expense and effort considering the flying involved.

with all the changes in the industry over the last few years I thought cruising was veering towards more of a land based hotel business model.

passengers would pay for a cabin & then everything else would be paid for individually. Drinks. buffets, breakfast, lunch dinner all land based restaurant style.

the specialty restaurants already follow this format so why not the rest of the ship???

would you still sail and to where & how long.

I just booked a cruise with TUI Mein Schiff 3. There is not a lot of discussion on Cruise Critic (gay or straight) about a ship catering to a German-speaking clientele, since this is an English-speaking site, but I discovered a German-speaking forum about cruising that has a lot more information about those ships. Unfortunately, there is not the equivalent of the "special interest" boards over there. While I doubt we will end up being "the only gays in the village" on board, I haven't been able to find anything on the roll call to confirm this, nor anything discussing any experiences with that cruise brand from an LGBT perspective. And when I use the search function on the other forum to search for "lesbisch" there are 0 results, while when I do "schwul" (which is German for gay), it turns up a lot of results for "schwül" (which is German for humid) because the search engine can't recognize the umlaut and the sweltering humidity of the Caribbean is something Germans like to write about in their trip reports. When I searched for "gay" there turned up one discussion among heterosexuals about a gay charter cruise on a TUI ship this coming summer in Scandinavia, where they noticed it didn't seem booked out well, and one surmised that perhaps the German gay market didn't like being in a "ghetto" or that maybe the target market did not like taking cruises. Searching for "friend of dorothy" turned up one result, where one gay cruiser (from my home town even!) remarked that he hoped TUI would introduce FOD meetings (this remark was about 5 years old, but I did not find any follow-up posts or responses to this). Other than just keeping my eyes peeled and being observant while on board, I don't really know what else I can do to research either a) the LGBT perspective on cruising with TUI or b) how many other gay people might be on board my particular cruise. Perhaps someone else on this forum here has some insight into the matter?

Two new ships to Fred.Olsen line from HAL

I received an email announcement from Fred.Olsen line (a British line) that they have added Bolette and Borealis to their line--

"Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has bought the Rotterdam (1997) and Amsterdam (2000) from Holland America Line as it works to modernize its fleet. The vessels will be renamed MS Borealis and MS Bolette, the company said. Both ships are around 63,000 gross tonnes, so will be Olsen biggest and youngest. ships. The passenger capacity at around 1,400 is quite modest for their size." -

Looking forward to the day we can cruise again and we will certainly give much consideration to these ships. We like the smaller ships and have generally sailed with HAL. As HAL continues to move to ever larger ships and smaller cabins we will likely have to change. Fred.Olsen has always interested us and we will follow their schedules when cruising actually returns.

There are several YouTube videos about Bolette and Borealis. Do a quick search and check out the changes/updating that has been done.
