Cool Cruiser

Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. Thanks for the fantastic pics, so glad you had a great time! We did the Venice portion (no Milan) back in 2017 & loved every second of it. So much so that we came close to doing it again this year. Alas, home repairs put an end to that-phooey. It's the front runner for next year though. Welcome home & thanks again!
  2. DH & I started river cruising in our early-mid 40's-were we among the youngest or the youngest on most sailings? Yes. Has it bothered us at all? Resounding no! We're early-mid 50's now & have done 5, all with Uniworld. We did their Bordeaux cruise last July & really enjoyed it. Honestly, we've found that most of the "older" people on board have more energy than we do! Just one word of caution-River Cruising is addictive!!
  3. Just got an email from Uniworld re-advertising their 2023 Mystery Cruises. Anyone booked on either of them? Wish we could go but it's a bit beyond our budget. Any feedback from the 2022 Mystery Cruises? They sound like so much fun!
  4. I wish I could give you a review. We had this booked last summer but ended up canceling & doing a Uniworld cruise to Bordeaux. The reason we switched was cost-Bordeaux was less money & French Escapade was at the top of our budget. We plan to do it in 2024 though since it looks like such a fantastic itinerary! Enjoy it!!
  5. In 2019 we stayed at the Grand Hotel Trois Rois. Gorgeous hotel right on the riverbank w/ a great restaurant. We had a terrific dinner here & a nice breakfast the next day prior to the start of our Uniworld cruise.
  6. I haven't decided on summer vacation 2023 yet & now I'm already thinking about summer 2024. It's a nice problem to have!
  7. We're thinking of taking a Viking Ocean cruise for Summer '23 & I was considering booking directly w/ Viking. I always book our river cruises (Uniworld) & land vacations (Tauck) on my own-I prefer it that way. Can I assume that booking by phone is relatively straightforward if I know most of what I want beforehand?
  8. Thank you for your review. We were starting to research a Douro cruise for next summer-either Tauck or AMA but I think we will skip it & find a new vacation destination. It seems like while it's a relaxing trip it's just a little too relaxing.
  9. Hi Everyone, Thank you all so much for your insights into Viking Ocean! It sounds like it's a pretty perfect fit for us so now the fun research begins. I know I'll have about 100 more questions as we go forward but you've given us a great place to start & a terrific overview. We're limited to July/early August-I know the hottest time of the year to do the Mediterranean but he's a teacher so there we are. Right now I'm intrigued by four: Empires of the Med, Iconic Western Med, Venice, Adriatic & Greece & finally Italian Sojourn. Thank you all again!!
  10. Hi All, We're interested in possibly booking a Viking Ocean cruise & have questions/are looking for info. It would be for one of their Mediterranean cruises but aren't sure which one yet. I figured Cruise Critic is the place to start. Quick background-it's Husband & I, early/mid 50's. We're big River Cruise fans (have done 5 w/Uniworld) & are not fans of large cruise ships (did 1 on RC & didn't like it, not our vibe at all). Have also done 9 land tours w/ Tauck World Discovery. We both love history & enjoy seeing new places & learning about the areas we visit. We don't need nightlife & hate umbrella drinks (but love a good glass of wine). 1: Would Viking Ocean possibly be a good fit for us? Their advertising makes it sound like they are. 2: Is there a set dining time for the dining venues? Are you forced to share tables w/ other people? 3: How are the included shore excursions? Are they good or are they just ok so Viking can say they included one in each port? 4: Can anyone give a very rough idea of how much the other shore excursions are? I realize they are all different prices & styles but just a ballpark amount. 5: Finally, we've heard horror stories of how Viking runs their River Cruise division-canceled departure dates, leaving people stranded mid-cruise if water levels are too low, etc. How is it dealing w/ their Ocean division? Are problems dealt w/ swiftly/professionally? Sorry for all the questions but we're novices to Viking/ocean cruising & don't want to make a big mistake! Any & all info is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks in advance!
  11. I followed along, I'm glad you enjoyed your first river cruise. They are addicting! I'll be following your next cruise too, hope you have some time to unwind. Thanks again!
  12. Enjoying following along, thanks for taking the time to post!
  13. For our Rhine cruise (2019) we flew into Zurich as it was a direct flight for us rather than a connection for Basel. We stayed the night before the cruise in Basel so I had the Hotel we were staying at arrange for a car service to meet us at the Zurich airport & bring us to our hotel. It was a bit pricey but so worth it! The driver took our luggage & led us to the car. We arrived at our hotel about 45 min later-I even grabbed a short nap in the car. Easy peasy!
  14. Seriously! Let's all just keep our collective fingers crossed that things ease up soon!
