  1. We may recall the transformer fire on Discovery in Dec '19, which caused reduced speed, missed ports and extra sea-days. Ok any ship can break down, even brand new ones but the 'goodwill gesture' of £250 suggests that Marella was cash strapped pre-Cov 19. If they do add pre knackers yard ships to their fleet, courtesy of Carnival, RCI etc., will TUI be able to afford the customary lick of paint and new carpets? For the next year or two, I'll be looking at the more expensive lines, those with a better customer relations record than Marella.
  2. Good to know Margaret that you got a full refund and that you'd booked with TUI direct and not thru' a TA. Although I think TAs are a tad quicker with the refund. Things out there are taking a while to process and it's not just TUI. I booked a flight from Exeter to Newcastle, for 1st August EX 2 cruise, thru' Flybe via my Barclaycard. I claimed when the airline went bust, using Barclay's 0800 number. They used an overseas call centre. When the Rep picked up, he knew from his screen that I had been waiting 1 hr 15 mins and he apologized. So they do have the technology 🙂
  3. That's good news Margaret. Can I ask if you booked direct via Marella website or through a travel agent of through a Marella Shop. I believe a TA will hold all monies on behalf of Marella but are legally obliged to return it to customer, in the event of cancellation. Thanks.
  4. Oddly, they haven't cancelled our EX 2 cruise for 1st August 2020 Iceland/Norway out of Newcastle. Don't know why it's been given a reprieve. The Norwegian ban on older ships, due to their use of high sulphur fuel comes into effect soon. No more Marella cruises to Norway from 2021 and thereafter, unless TUI donates one of their spanking new Mein Shiff ships that runs on NPG 🤯
  5. Excellent thread, thanks all. Q1 Am I right in saying, all future cruises with any cruise line, should be booked thru' a Travel Agent, because they hold onto deposits and final balance? Q2 If you phone the Marella cruiseline on 0203 6361931, do you get put thru to a TUI shop? If yes, I assume The Shop is not classed as a TA and therefore TUI hold on to your cash? TIA.
  6. Yep it's what they do. With ospreys, the male catches then eats the head and delivers the remains to female. However, when the chicks have fledged, he will bring LIVE fish to the table - to "educate" them 😁. They also have ospreys in the States. This is one of the best 2 minute vids you'll see. 7. Yes Kalos, these birds-of-prey-webcams are not for the squeamish, when the peregrine brings pigeons to the nest, to dismember. I've been following a couple of Welsh osprey webcams for a number of years. The 2 pair arrived about a month ago and the both now have 3 eggs each. Hatchings start in 2+ weeks time. The male does most of the fishing, expect sea trout, flounder and mullet, brought to the nest. 8. Go easy on CEO Fritz Joussen Nancy, the poor guy can't afford a tie :- https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/markets/article-8212461/Bosses-travel-giant-Tui-pressure-cut-salaries-asking-taxpayer-pay-staff.html
  9. We Brits are more vulnerable during a pandemic, than most nationalities because we're a nation of travelers, mostly due to our awful weather 😃 which might explain our high figures. You're probably correct about our 1st Aug trip, as most port authorities won't allow entry, while there are new infections. We renew our annual insurance on 1st Jan every year. It includes cruise cover but I haven't studied the small print ...
  10. I didn't know that, thanks. The extra couple of weeks till say, 21st June could make a difference whether we go from Newcastle on 1st August. You never know, things could be back to normal.
  11. Ah thanks Tidespring, that does look encouraging. Their Ts&Cs does state "refund" or "alternative cruise". Problem (one) is we've set our hearts on 1/08/2020 EX 2 Iceland/Norway. We had an email today reminding us that balance due in a week. Problem (two) is Marella are not doing Norway after 2020 because their (older) ships can't meet Norway's strict sulphur fuel emissions. Hmm, pay the balance or lose deposit and book Norway thru a competitor, decisions, decisions 🤨
  12. Just read your post in Marella Cruises Coronavirus thread. You referred to your holiday in Madeira. Was this package holiday booked through a Travel Agent? A TA for example, holds the cash on your behalf and are forced to refund to you - in the event of cancellation. Thanks in anticipation.
  13. This made me chuckle. Man demo's a Jack Daniels Water Mixer - and seems to stay sober !! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayoO0RJNp9w
  14. You are correct as usual. I should have said TUI took on some Thomas Cook pilots and crew and added 10,000 flights, as a result of TC's collapse. :- https://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/thomas-cook-collapse-latest-tui-extra-flights-holidays-pilots-crew-recruit-a9150301.html The main point of my post was the furloughing of 11000 of it's UK staff. There have been many posts in this thread, stating the slowness in communication with TUI/Marella. Hopefully this goes some way in explaining why. Paul
  15. Yep, they're an Anglo/German company but Berlin seems to call the shots. No doubt they will argue that it's the German Bank putting up the loan and must abide by their terms and conditions. Taking over the ailing British companyThomas Cook was a bad move too. Here's another source on the loan :- https://www.travelweekly.co.uk/articles/366103/coronavirus-tui-to-furlough-11000-uk-staff
