How much do you spend during your cruise ship port stops?
Mary229 replied to OlsSalt's topic in Holland America Line
Besides my tours or taxis (transportation) I will buy admissions and perhaps a few artisan items. $65 is probably about right, per person. -
Heritage Auctions recently auctioned a regular $2 bill, with no odd markings, for $2400. You might want to hang on to those bills.

They are revamping desserts. I have had a few new items this week including the delicious cake rolls. They also have had a separate selection of regional recipes on this cruise every day in the lido. The cake bar of yesteryear is also now back. Also there seem to be multiple sugar free options daily. I do think the MDR dessert menu is lackluster so I always choose fruit after an MDR meal and head to the lido for a sweet treat

Sail Standby for $49 a day- new program
Mary229 replied to BermudaBound2014's topic in Holland America Line
They are making sure they don’t oversell and trying to maximize fares through upsells. In the last few weeks they make guaranteed assignments, offer upsells, perhaps add promotion guests and so on. This new program allows them to get it right before re-offering rooms. -
Sail Standby for $49 a day- new program

HAL seems to be using “sold out” for inventory management. It is not a reliable indicator. -
How bad is it to tip in Canadian dollars?
Mary229 replied to snowlight's topic in Holland America Line
We would have to get rid of those intolerable sales taxes😉 and I have not seen any local governments volunteering for that -
Do HA Noodram/Nieuw Amsterdam interior rooms have sofa?
Mary229 replied to wsp2205's topic in Holland America Line
It is room dependent, best to ask by room number. I only had a tiny love seat in a verandah room on the Noordam. I am not very experienced with this class of ship but my few experiences have yielded widely different results. -
Just back from first HAL cruise in 4 years

When the elevator has many stops that is called a “ship tour” -
Just back from first HAL cruise in 4 years
Mary229 replied to Tom O.'s topic in Holland America Line
There are crew members specifically assigned to assist the disabled. It is imperative that people fill out that form. The form is indicated during the booking process @Tom O. thanks for the review. It sounds accurate to me. -
The only difference between HaL gift cards and AARP is that you can choose a specific amount for HAL cards on their website. Once I needed $13 and some small cents and was able to buy a gift card on the HAL website for that exact amount

MDR honors HIA by the glass wine. You will also be offered a free wine tasting and can book specialty dining for 1/2 price - for those meals above what you get with HIA
-
Yes. From experience , many times. .

You cannot mix credit cards and gift cards. Buy another gift card to finish. HAL allows you to buy gift cards in any amount on their website so buy a small card there to top off your purchase. Or buy another AARP and use it for shipboard purchases

Single Smoking Thread (Use for all smoking discussions on HAL) )
Mary229 replied to Lyndihop's topic in Holland America Line
I was sent to the cruise contract which did indeed say it is allowed. That is why I asked for direct, personal experiences. -
Single Smoking Thread (Use for all smoking discussions on HAL) )
Mary229 replied to Lyndihop's topic in Holland America Line
😂that must be a great relief to parent thinking their kids are “only” smoking cigarettes. this is not an American versus non American issue. HAL, officially out of Seattle Washington, USA allows vaping in their cabins. My question was to determine if the crew actually understood that and did indeed not harass those who vape, no judgement on anyone’s habits. -
Flight Ease - what do "economy," "premium economy," etc. mean?
Mary229 replied to lupaglupa's topic in Holland America Line
Just checking, you did add your KLM member number in the HAL Flight Ease website? as an aside, a trick I often use - I gate check my carry on free of charge. Once on my way home I have little concern if my luggage arrives timely so I will ask the gate agent for a courtesy gate check. They rarely refuse as people tend to carry way too much onboard to be accommodated easily -
New to Holland America? This is for you...AKA "HAL For Dummies"
Mary229 replied to Host Walt's topic in Holland America Line
It depends on when they get it lined up and even after they publish some excursions others may continue to popup until sailing day. For my upcoming Alaska trip I decided what I wanted and booked through HAL or others as availability presented. I have also cancelled some to buy others. Ever since the Covid lockdowns many business channels have been disrupted -
Also get in touch with your agent and get them working for you. I am sorry that happened.

I stayed for 4 days a while back. Spend one day, at least, in town. Ride the funicular and enjoy the views from the top. Enjoy the large central city park with its various museums and gardens. Take a free walking tour (tip expected), they leave from the city park. The farmers market is pretty incredible.Hop on is available but we did not use it. We hired a private driver and spent one day vineyard touring. Check the big shore excursions tour companies for other escorted tours.

Without regard for being a Mariner's Holiday Cruise
Mary229 replied to Billthekid's topic in Holland America Line
Many have said that you shouldn’t marry a loyalty program. I wish HAL would simply offer more economic rewards , that is countable. Ceremonies and recognitions can very greatly and are hard to evaluate -
The question not answered is when was the charge? Was it added after you walked off of the ship? Was it added the very last day or was it on your bill and overlooked until you were home? Whether it is $11 or $1100 it is his not HAL’s and he is right to bring up this matter.

Flight Ease - what do "economy," "premium economy," etc. mean?
Mary229 replied to lupaglupa's topic in Holland America Line
To my knowledge HAL never uses those base rates. I have never paid for a checked bag with Flight Ease. -
So she was able to have two service dogs. HAL needs to shape up, I can understand someone in management not passing judgement on one (perhaps) but not two. Be sure you include this information in your survey.

Perhaps but perhaps not. Entrepreneurs tend to be a group that takes risks. I foolhardily started my business and foolishly added to it over the years. Usually on a whim. I own a nice house in a premium neighborhood, have multiple cars, have retirement funding and cruise as often as I want. All income was derived from that foolish action.
