  1. We buy a refrigerator magnet from places we travel to by land or sea. A person can only use a certain number of coffee mugs or key chains, and every time I open the fridge, I'm reminded of the places we've been.
  2. There are two kinds of people who pack for vacation. Those who pack a month ahead of time, and those who pack at the very last minute. They are usually married to each other.
  3. Thanks. I never heard of shared cabins, it sounded bizarre to me.
  4. Now explain "shared cabin." How does that happen with strangers? Or was he set up by someone?

  6. I'm guessing this is in response to the many reviews of the Prima, including mine, that said this is a warm weather cruise ship. The Prima TA went as far north as Iceland. I loved Iceland, but the entire cruise was cold and windy, making the outdoor seating unusable, and the indoor seating overcrowded. Everything I've seen about the Viva looks like a cut and paste from the Prima.

    NCL Flights

I recently had a transatlantic cruise on the Prima, using the NCL air. My experience: Los Angeles to London Heathrow, via Rome. This flight was on ITA airlines, formerly Alitalia. We flew directly over London to Rome, had a two hour layover then on to London. I'm assuming it was cheaper than a direct flight. Baggage was free, typical 50 pound limit for the checked bag, one overhead bag, and an under seat bag. It was an economy class. I have no complaints other than the previously mentioned roundabout route. The cruise ended in New York, the flight was out of Newark, New Jersey. Baggage was also free, and economy class on Delta. The shuttle bus took us directly to the airport from the ship, but our flight wasn't until 8:30 pm. If I could have figured out what to do with our luggage, I would have skipped the shuttle, spent some time in New York, and taxied to the airport. As it was, we got to spend all day waiting at the airport. When we checked in, we had the option of going standby on one of three earlier flights, but we'd be taking a gamble. Why NCL chose the late flight, I'm guessing because it was cheaper. We landed in Los Angeles at 11:30 pm. I wasn't willing to chance of driving 35 miles home with a good chance of not staying awake, so we got a hotel. We did take advantage of deviating the flight for two days prior to the cruise. This really meant only one day in London, as the first day was getting from the airport to the hotel, getting dinner and going to bed. We spent the next day in London, then the next getting to the port in Southampton. Two days is the maximum deviation NCL allows. Not a horror story, but not the most convenient itinerary. On the plus side, the price for the two of us was $599, about a third of what I would have paid if I'd have booked myself. Then there was the added cost of the hotel at the end. Is it worth saving the money of the flight for the inconvenience? You'll have to decide for yourself.
  8. I do have to agree with most of what you wrote. It seems that some people aren't happy unless they're complaining, and many of them take cruises and write reviews. One common complaint that I do have to agree with is the small size of the dining and entertainment venues. I hope this gets fixed on future Leonardo ships. It does seem that the ship was designed for warm weather cruises, which the TA was not. But I'm reminded of the old Super Chicken cartoon. Whenever Super Chicken's sidekick, Fred, would complain Super Chicken would tell him "You knew the job was dangerous when you took it." I think the vibe of the cruise would have been different if we had been able to stop in Kirkwall, as it was, we had two stretches of four sea days, making passengers antsy. Overall, you're right, it was an incredible trip, and we also met some great people.
  9. I did see that in the renders, but it definitely wasn't on the ship. I don't know why it was even considered, since the biggest danger on a ship is not sinking, but fire.
  10. One thing nobody (including me) has mentioned, at least not that I've seen: the artwork all over the ship! While all ships have some pictures hanging, I loved the way the Prima had the feel of an art gallery. Very classy.
  11. I'll be on the Transatlantic next month, if nobody beats me to it I'll be glad to get a picture for you.
  12. Looks good, but I'm disappointed that there's no pound cake French toast at breakfast.
  13. NCL's website is so glitchy. I was looking at a Pacific Coastal cruise, airfare from Vancouver to Los Angeles, which would be one way, was $20,000,000.
  14. So far, everything I've seen about Viva is a cut and paste from Prima. Glad to see the hull art is going a different, if not similar, direction.
  15. I did the Mediterranean cruise on the Epic. Ugly or not, it was a wonderful trip!
