  1. My suggestion would be to stay on the ship that day. Other than the zoo, the beach and rainforest/jungle, there isn't much to do.

On port days, the Spa usually offers specials. Possibly you and your mother/mother-in-law could enjoy a nice massage or manicure/pedicure. The kids would have the pool/hot tubs to enjoy along with the few others who remain on the ship. Check with the cruise ship's kids camp to see if you would be allowed to use one of the rooms/toys/activities with your children.

This could also be a day for the guys to take off for some fishing and then giving the gals a break on some other port day.

Unless they have somehow put a pier in Belize, remember that the tender is one of the longest tender rides there is. If you really want to get off the ship, just go walk around the shops, have some "tourist" food and tender back to the ship.

  2. NCTribeFan, I sent an email to Sands Brewery and they confirmed that Bahama John's Rib Shack is now on their property. They also said it is $5 to tour the brewery. You probably didn't pay on the cruise ship tour because admission was included in what you paid for the tour.

  3. okay, so what I'm finding is this...it looks like about $5/pp each way for the taxi, $5/pp for the brewery tour/tasting (it looks like you taste all 5 or 6 brews then can drink as much as you want/can in 1 hour. There is also a great place to grab lunch on the premises... Bahama John's Seafood N Rib's that gets good reviews on TripAdvisor. This will be our tour!

  4. That sounds like a great option. Do you know how much the package is or where I can get the info from? Thanks for the tip! :)

  5. We are taking the ferry to Haines since our ship does not stop there. There is a river float through the bald eagle sanctuary that sounds interesting.

I've done this. As Yukon says, there will not be an abundance of eagles. I actually saw more on the dock in Sitka than on the raft float in Haines. But, I did enjoy just floating down the shallow river and taking in the scenery, especially if everyone on the raft stays quiet and you can take it all in.

I will warn you though, the trip I went on, they had us take our shoes off and put on rubber boots. Trust me, the boots are loose and cold, and add to that your feet are resting on a thin rubber raft floating on glacier cold water  BRING AN EXTRA PAIR OF WARM SOCKS for when you take your shoes off ;)

  6. Looking for suggestions. Family of 10 people: 71 to 3. We are firming up plans for each port but Skagway is causing difficulties. We do not want to go on train ride; we have done them before but too long and boring for small children. The reviews on Cruise Critic have been such over several months that I do not want to go with Dyea Dave tours as he has been unreliable for many. It would be awful to book someone and then not have them show up! Are there other small tour operators that are good and reliable?

I would appreciate other suggestions besides train and Dave to do in 14 hours in Skagway on June 29th.

We booked through this company http://www.klondiketours.com They have rafting, fishing, White Pass/Summit tours, Liarsville Salmon Bake, ect. This will be the first time I will be using them, but they were recommended by a reliable source :) We are doing the Summit and then the Salmon Bake with them :D

  7. Salmon Etc. is a little salmon shop on Mission St. just 1/2 block from the dock in Ketchikan (across the street from Ketchikandies). They sell salmon that is processed at Silver Lining - a cannery that is about 1 mile from the dock. There you can get canned, vacuum packed or even order fresh salmon to be shipped to your home.

Okay, for all of you buying that canned smoked salmon. Try this: A trisket or Wheat Thin with a little cream cheese, add some jalapeno or habanero pepper jelly, top with smoked salmon - TO DIE FOR!!!

My step-daughter's boyfriend turned us on to this one. He has a small place in Alaska and smokes and cans his own salmon and makes his own habanero jelly. Gotta love that boy and his Christmas presents!!!! :p
