  1. The new “Cake Me Away” dessert celebration sounds like a promising development. My husband is a huge sweet hound. We are taking our first HAL cruise over the holidays on the Koningsdam. We have been on Celebrity a number of times, as well as Princess and Carnival. The cakes were all gorgeous—like mouth-droolingly gorgeous. However, they all tasted basically the same but with different toppings, food coloring, frosting, etc… The base cake was very disappointing—kinda like wet cornbread consistency without the yummy cornbread flavor. It all ends up being a distracting visual tease, and my poor husband is then forced to find some way to cope, often suffering silently with his chocolate chip cookies, vanilla ice cream, and the occasional brownie. It is tragic to watch, and he often sulks until the next opportunity to be visually tantalized, yet disappointed. It’s a vicious cycle, and I need to prepare myself (and him) for the level of dismay we will both have to endure… So, tell me—how are HAL’s cakes and desserts in general? 🙏🏻
  2. I did actually consider this as a viable alternative idea. He is all for culinary adventure, so we’ll find out what is in offer.
  3. Thank you for this suggestion. I wonder if they’d include it on the buffet for others to enjoy. I hope you’re looking forward to the cruise as much as we are!
  4. Thank you so much for your insights. I hope you are having a wonderfully relaxing cruise!
  5. Yes! He could bring a few baggies with his cans and get hot water from the tea station or room service. Kinda like his own NC NYE sous vide. I think you’re on to something!
  6. Thank you to all so have replied thus far. It looks like he may end up disappointed for the real deal, but hopefully we can find a suitable alternative. This I truly is the definition of a first world problem. Fortune has already smiled upon us being able to share so many wonderful days traveling to Hawaii together.
  7. Hello everyone! We will be cruising with our daughter and son-in-law on the Royal Princess to Hawaii (December 22, 2022). This is our first cruise with Princess, and we’re all very much looking forward to it. This may seem silly to some, but for my son-in-law, adhering to good Southern New Year’s Day traditions have served him well so far. Not wanting to buck tradition, he would like to know if he needs to BYOC(ans) his own collards and black-eyed peas. I am stumped, but I certainly don’t want him to miss out on a long-standing family tradition. Any suggestions from previous New Year’s Day cruisers? Thanks a bunch (or should I say “peck”?)! Jen
