    Way off-topic certainly,  Michalina. :classic_wink:

But not out-of-hand, & definitely informative.

OK, mebbe not for those who click on each time there's a post, in the forlorn hope that it's about "foreign currency" :classic_biggrin:

    JB

Hey John Bull, I use to do lots of drinking, smoking and running around with loose women when I was in Gosport, Lee on the Solent when I was in the Royal Canadian Navy, didn't have to worry about "foreign currency."

As did we, in 2006. The ship they are now using is larger, and I hear good things about it from people who've returned from their cruise.

Some people on CC may have been on this ship when she did the winter seasons in Cuba… 2 or 3 years, I think, before USA ships were allowed in.

Hey jocap, I did the 7 day cruise to Cuba, had to fly from Orlando to Montego Bay, Jamaica to catch the ship and circumnavigated Cuba....Excellent cruise....

Either place is a wonderful destination.  If these are the only 2 options, I'd go to Alaska on Princess only because we like Princess WAY WAY more than NCL.  If you could put  a "Celebrity" ship in to the mix to Bermuda out of NJ, it would be a tougher choice. If it were the Celebrity ship, I'd have to say "either".  If air to Alaska is a bit pricy when you want to go, that could be something to take into consideration.  If you do do the Alaska cruise and it's either to/from Vancouver, definitely add a few days there.  It's a wonderful city!

I love Vancouver, I use to live there.

It's Rick Steves. And moneybelts are neither designed nor intended to be worn in the water.

Money belts are designed to be worn in the water and are waterproof.

    • It's, well, waterproof, not only in the shower but for those other fun activities, like rafting or swimming or kayaking. And in the rain.
    • If you're traveling solo, how many times have you wondered what to do with your valuables on the beach? If you've found new friends you can leave your stuff with them, but if you're truly on your own and your lodgings don't have a safe (it does happen) your choices are limited: you'll have to wear your stuff, and a waterproof pouch of some sort may be the only way to keep it all from getting soaked.
    • It's easy to keep clean and dry. Anyone who has ever used a concealed money belt made of cloth or synthetics will tell you how quickly it gets clammy and smelly. This one won't. Just run a soapy cloth inside and out and it's clean.
    • You can get waterproof phone cases as well.

Sold on the waterproof version? Remember you can get lots of styles - waist, of course, but also for the neck, wrist, leg, ankle and armband.

We have done many cruises to Alaska and 3 to Bermuda.

JMO -- I would select Alaska -- the scenery is fantastic.  And you can relax on that itinerary as well.  June is much better.  Have done Alaska in September and on our cruise the weather was terrible.  But then again weather is unpredictable.

Plus you may not see any wild life as advertised, also it rains 95% of the time during the two-week period while we were there. We booked three flight seeing tours, and they all got canceled due to bad weather. Although, we were able to go on several land tours on buses, the sight seeing was not that great because it was either raining or clouding; everything looked gray color and low contrast. I hope the weather will be kind to those of you who will be visiting there soon.

My experience is primarily with Princess. With them, I get to choose my flight times without paying for a deviation. For the three cruises we've taken that originated in Europe, buying the airfare through Princess was a lot less. Last year, our flights from North Carolina to London and from New York back home were under $300. We flew in seven nights early so we would have time in London.

Thank you for the invaluable information.

    Pros and Cons of each...

Cruise Line: tends to book super-early flights, which may include really inconvenient times, to ensure that you land in plenty of time to make embarkation, and fairly late flights home at debarkation.  They promise to get you there, but not that it'll be convenient.  EXAMPLE:  booked  on 5:30am flight, landed in MIA at 7:15am.  Between waking up at 3am and waiting 5 hours to board... made for a long day.  Flight home boarded at 6:16pm, with connection landed at 10:45pm.  Another super long day sitting at the airport, but "we made our flight!"

TA: potential for upcharge, or for additional goodies, depending on the length of your relationship with said TA.  Gives you someone to yell at if it's messed up, but also may mean you depend on the TA to intercede if you have to change the reservation for some reason.  Can be good, or bad, to have them in the middle, and it totally depends on whether you prefer to delegate responsibility and authority or not.

Self: you have full flexibility to choose departure time and airline, and take the responsibility for making sure you allow enough time for potential delays, bumps, etc.

Our personal preference is to self-book.  We often still book the super-super-early flight, and hope for/ volunteer for bumps.  The vouchers make up for the early wake-up call, and we score them once every 3 or 4 trips.  Once we split up, he went to Miami and I went to Ft. Lauderdale, and we met up at the ship with $1200 in vouchers.  Neither the cruise line nor TA would have wanted to play that game with us.

    Thanks Sue Do-Over

You asked the same question about 2021 sailings yesterday.  You received several answers along with the recommendation to check the cruise lines websites and your TA. Did you follow any of that advice?

Yes I followed their advice and the majority advised me to post it again with the 2020 sailing date as different dates, cruise lines and ports may apply.  I will take your comment under advisement.  Thank you for your concern and responding to my comment in a most expedient manner.

Yes, I know about Queen Elizabeth's visit. I run a fb group and one of our members placed a photograph that illustrated the distance from the ship to Signal Hill.

While we are chatting perhaps you could recommend the best streets for photographing the 'Jelly Bean Houses"?

Gower St., Holloway St., and Pilot's Hill.  Which ship will you be arriving on.

    Good to hear Harley52.

My penultimate 'job' in the Royal Navy was based in Gosport where I was the First Lieutenant at the Submarine School, HMS Dolphin.

It would appear that I will be visiting your 'Home Town' before the end of the year. I have planned to walk up Signal Hill and make it to Quidi Vidi Battery.

Should you desire to have a chat you can contact me through my Cruise Blog comment facility ( Nothing will be published)

Actually, the Cunard Queen Elizabeth was in St. John's yesterday and we hosted a couple from Brisbane, we visited Signal Hill, Quidi Vidi Battery, the National War Memorial, Cape Spear, Bowering Park to see the Caribou associated with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and surrounding area.

One of my better Cunard cruises was on Queen Mary 2 some years ago when as part of her world cruise we sailed to Sydney and called at Los Angeles: having sailed around South America first.

Crossing the Pacific is always something special.

Thank you Solent Richard, I made many trips to Portsmouth and Gosport while in the Royal Canadian Navy.

A cruise such as that would most likely be a re positioning cruise which would be moving a ship from a North American itinerary - very possibly something like an Alaska itinerary - to begin itineraries in Australia and New Zealand once the Alaska season is over, and visa versa.  Typically this would include a singular Hawaii itinerary en route.  To New Zealand from the US would likely take place in November and from New Zealand to the US in April.

One cruise line that I am aware that offers this is RCI.

    Thank you
