  1. It's never too early to make cruise clothes. Lately I have been making leggings and biker shorts for rowing. I finally got fed up with all the tall active wear being black or gray. Now I have fun stuff to row in. I also made my first tank top and it came out ok. I will be adjusting the pattern by raising the neck line. It's a little to flowy below my waist, so I will adjust the pattern there too. Once that is done I will make a few for the cruise in April. :)

  2. I love Laurence's design style. I am not a fan of the floral jacket, but that is more of a fabric issue than the design. I would wear the romper/overall, but with a shirt. I am rooting for her to win, but who knows what the judges will like.

  3. How hard it is to get shade? (We don't want to rent a cabana). We would like to rent a clamshell or be under trees. Thanks!

We were on HMC on 11/21 in cabana 10 (green). There are shady areas between cabanas 9, 10, and 11. There is a hammock between 10 and 11 and lots of loungers. Also the last restroom is located behind #9. Most people did not walk down to this area, so it was not crowded (2 ships there) Hope this helps.

  4. Has anyone done both Zuiderdam and Coral Princess on the 10nt partial Panamal Canal transit and can compare them for me? Looking mostly for opinions on physical ship differences, entertainment and enrichment/destination lectures.

I find food and service between HAL and Princess comparable so not looking for opinions in that arena :D

Hey Sweetie! I can't give opinions on Princess, but I am happy to chat with you about the Zuiderdam when we get home later this week. I know from talking to Crews News that he is scanning everything from the ship and will be updating his website.

  5. CrewsNews,

Since we did not get to the Fitness Center on the tour, I thought I would let everyone know what equipment is there:

    • Treadmills
    • Ellipticals (2 have arms that move and 2 do not)
    • Recumbent Bikes (3)
    • Upright Bikes (3)
    • Concept2 Ergs/Rowing Machines (2)
    • 2 complete sets of dumbbells
    • Bar Bell Set
    • Various Weight Machines including a leg press, leg curl, leg extension, lat pull down, and a few others that I can't recall.
    • Stair Master

There is a cardio machine for an upper body workout. I will try to look at its name the next time I am up there.

Fitness Center is open 6am - 9pm and I saw signups for various classes like Pilates, Yoga, Boot Camp, Morning Stretch, etc.

  6. I am heading to Florida tomorrow for a 10 day Panama Canal cruise. I am in the process of packing now...took a little lunch break. Here is what I am taking:

    2 Maxi's

    1 T-Shirt Dress

3 athletic skirts for excursions (built in shorts)

    A bunch of Columbia t-shirts

    1 light weight cotton tunic

    2 tank tops

    2 pairs of athletic sandals

    2 pairs of thong sandals

    3 bikinis

    1 rashguard

    2 coverups

    Workout clothes

I am not doing gala night on this cruise, so no gowns or cocktail dresses. :D

  7. LOL, did you really think they would tell you no, and risk pissing you off? Cruise lines make little effort to enforce suggested dress. Curious though.... why did you initially describe them as "designer" jeans when you now agree that the label isn't what determines how dressy something is? By the way, there's a difference between "dressy" and "fashionable." I'd put fancy ripped jeans in the fashionable category, not the dressy category. But wear what you like, as it sounds like your mind was already made up and you just wanted confirmation for a decision you already made.;)

Actually, I have seen Holland America and Royal Caribbean enforce their dress codes. NCL's dress code is very casual in comparison. From what I am reading, the OP emailed NCL and posted here at the same time hoping to get a quick answer since she is leaving in a couple of days. If it were me, I would have done both too in hopes of getting an answer quickly.

OP, most of us on the fashion board are helpful and respond to questions based on our experiences with specified cruise lines. If these ladies (and a few gents) were not nice and helpful, I would not have participated on this board for the past 5+ years.

  8. Blondie008, it's been quite a few years since I have sailed on NCL. In the MDR for dinner (the more casual of the two dining rooms) I saw guys in athletic shorts being served. Your jeans sound fabulous and you will be fine wearing them on the cruise. I grew up in Texas where there are work jeans and your dress jeans. Yours are definitely dress jeans in my book. :)

I hope you have a wonderful cruise.

  9. How could Roberi's dress not be in the top! It was beautiful in daylight and stunning in blacklight. All that movement. And he didn't have to mess with any arts and crafts. Do you think he realized those filaments in the raw edges would glow like they did when at Mood?

Roberi should have been in the top.

I agree 100%. I love Jenni, but that was not a top 3 outfit. Her drop crotch outfit from last week was amazing, and I am looking forward to seeing what else she can do.

  10. Doing a 10 night European cruise and I think I am bringing too many handbags. One is for port travel which is larger, two dinner bags (one dressy/sparkly and the other plain) and one larger bag that will have my port travel bag inside of it for the airplane to carry my kindle, etc.

What is everyone doing these days with trying to scale down?

I did the exact same thing for our trip to Europe last year. I packed small things in the evening purses, so they really did not take up extra space in my luggage. If you have the space, bring them. :D

  11. Thank you everyone for your replies! I will be sure to check out all the stores/sites suggested. I LOVE maxi dresses, but at 5'2 dresses can be tricky. I'm not worried about my people judging my size, if they don't like it they don't have to look, I just want to be comfortable and wear clothes that make sense for what we're doing that day. I'm from Wisconsin and don't have a lot of really hot summer days so my summer clothes supply is somewhat limited. My height is often a big hurdle with clothes-especially dresses and capris. I will look into the suggested places :) thanks everyone!

A good tailor can make any maxi dress or maxi skirt the perfect length for you. Just remember to wear the shoes you plan on wearing with the dress. Tailoring adds a little expense to your clothing, but it is so worth it to have clothing that hits wear it should hit and fits properly. I am a sewer, so I do a lot of my tailoring. But, I have a phenomenal tailor to do the things that are not in my skill set, like formal wear.

  12. I am 44 and wear a bunch of Eileen Fisher and J Jill. This week I scored huge with both brands. Belk had a sale on Eileen Fisher, so I bought three tops, a sleeveless jersey dress, and a pair of charcoal silk slouchy pants (love the slouchy pants). J Jill had the linen sale, so I went online and went crazy in their tall section: 3 pairs of linen pants, 2 sleeveless tunics, and 2 summer weight short sleeve sweaters. My J Jill package arrived today and the pants and sweaters fit great. I will have to do a little tailoring to the tunics, but that is not a big deal since I sew...love my serger. :D

  13. Do you use them for swimming much? Do they stay on well in the water or do they get loose? They are designed like typical swim shoes but people seem to be using them for everything but, according to the reviews.

I like the tropical design and would not mind getting a pair. Thanks.

I wear Fitkicks when rowing and yesterday I jumped in the lake with them on (95 degrees out and I wanted a quick cool off). They stayed on my feet just fine. Even though the bottoms are really thin, they were thick enough to walk on the rocks at the shoreline and not bother my feet. They also dry out pretty quickly. One thing though, I did have to cut out the suede toe guard. They were a little snug up there...there is stretchy material under that, so just used a seam ripper and scissors to remove.
