  1. Hi everyone!

I'll be boarding Star Princess on Saturday, June 20, in Whittier for a seven-night cruise through Glacier Bay to Vancouver with all-new North to Alaska! programming. We'll be running a Cruise Critic Live chat from June 22 to 26 while I'm onboard. If you've got a question about the ship, Alaska excursions or any of the onboard programs, simply leave it on the chat, and I'll answer once we get sailing. Thanks, and looking forward to it!

How exciting! We will be on this cruise too. My husband, celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary along with our best friends. This is our first time on Princess, first trip to Alaska (pre-cruise Denali land tour-yay) our 2nd cruise with our best friends! We have extended our stay in Vancouver and have tickets to the Women's World Cup quarter final game. Can't wait for our Alaskan Adventure to begin! Happy Sailing!

  2. Thanks for the explaination. Now, I'm wondering where you snorkeled in Grand Cayman LOL. The most colorful place we've ever snorkeled was at Chankanaab which is right next to Playa Uvas. On a past cruise we took the ferry from St. Thomas to Trunk Bay in St. John to snorkel and the snorkeling was SO disappointing :( All brown fish. Maybe it was the time of year. We do stop in Grand Cayman this summer so let me know where you snorkeled there, we will have to try it out. We've only done the beach, Turtle Farm, Hell, and shopping in GC so far.

The best snorkeling we have ever done was in Grand Cayman last April. Once we tendered in, we walked a few blocks (like maybe 2) to Eden Rock, rented gear for like $10 & jumped in off the shore. It was truly amazing. I was a little unerved by the 5 ft Tarpin (there were 3 of them) the were huge! But it was beautiful, lots of colorful fishies & squid too.

Check out the GC boards, you'll find more info there.

  3. After reading this thread I made reservations at Playa Uvas for our cruise in April. It sounds great. There will be a total of 10 of us going.

I have a few questions though. Hopefully some of you people who've recently visited can give me a few answers.

I've heard that the beach there can be a little rough on the feet. Would you recommend water shoes? Also, with the all inclusive pass drinks are included. After we are done in the water I plan to drink quite a bit. I've been on an all inclusive excursion before and getting a drink was quite a task. Is that the case at Uvas?

Do any of you have recent pictures of the place?

The beach is basically tiny little crushed shells, we just had flip flops & it was fine. Let's face it, you don't feel much after several margaritas! You shouldn't have any problems getting drinks, we never did & there were 13 of us & several others there that day. I'll see if I can come up with a few pictures to post. Sadly, I forgot my camera this trip & have to rely on my friends for photos so it might take me a few days. We had such a good time, hope you enjoy it too!

  4. We will be going to Uvas on a cruise with the Holiday in March. This will be our first cruise so I am wondering about tipping if we purchased the all-inclusive package at Uvas. I got the package with everything included, my husband got the package with everything, just not the snorkeling. Then we also booked two 30-min. massages. Do we tip the guide for the snorkeling and kayaking separately? How much do you give them for the tip? What about the waiter (especially with the open bar)? Massage?

Any info on this would be greatly appreciated!

Oops, forgot you asked how much tip. We tipped the snorkel guide (roughly) 5pp & Kiko our awesome waiter got 10 from each of us, trust me, he earned it! I think I threw 10 into the bartender's jar (I'm not sure if anyone in my group gave any extra-like I said, tequilla talking!)

    Hope this helped. Have fun.

We tipped the snorkeling guide, our waiter (we loved Kiko! You'll be assigned someone) I tipped the bartender on my way out, yes, I think it was the tequilla tipping, I mean, talking! I personally gave Carmen $20 just because she made sure our group of 13 felt very welcomed and pampered. Two of our gals got massages & tipped them as well. It is likely, depending on how many people are there that day, that you could have different guides for snorkeling & kayaking so I think that tipping them both is appropriate. Our snorkeling guide teared up when I handed him the tip from our group, he was so appreciative. Whatever you decide, have a great time. We love Playa Uvas & can't wait to go back.

  6. Neener Neener...we had such a great lunch at Uvas on Saturday that my family group decided to stay there instead of continuing on to our other excursion! LOL!

Kiko treated us so well, Eduardo showed up on his day off to collect his Chipotle Tabasco sauce, and Carmen traded hugs and kisses for some new Crocs. The grounds were gorgeous as usual and they even brought a cloud over for a couple of minutes to cool us down after we spent the morning at Discover Mexico.

I love going back to Uvas...it feels like home!

This time I got to meet Lezlee (LRene) and hubby, Mike...and sister, Linda!

You people need to get in on our RuleBreaker's Cruise in September. Email me for details if you might be interested! Put "RuleBreakers" in the subject line so the spam monster doesn't eat you.

Welcome back Stir, thanks for letting us know how everyone's doing. I have only been to Playa Uvas twice, but, the second time it was truly like being home. They are so amazing. Wish I was there right now.

  7. When I'm not riding the donkey, I drive a CL63 AMG, so don't tell me about city girl! :p

So, how'm I gonna recognize you?

Good morning, I know you are getting excited about your upcoming visit to Playa Uvas. Could you please tell Carmen that Teresa & her crazy gang of birthday ladies say hello! We had such a great time, seems like yesterday (Jan. 14th) and I miss my beach bed!

    TIA!

  8. Just a question about snorkeling...if you take a snorkel tour from the beach, can you keep the snorkel equipment for the day so you can snorkel on your own afterwards? I've read they don't allow you to have an alcoholic drink before their excursions, if we kept our snorkel equipment, and had an alcoholic drink, would they have a problem w/us snorkeling on our own from the beach? Just curious.

We were just there last Monday, with a group of 13 ladies. They did allow us to hold onto our gear & go back out if we wanted. Those that did go back out only had one cocktail, which was a very responsible way to go. The water was really choppy that day & it just isn't a good mix, alcohol, wind & snorkeling! I agree with everyone who posted positively about Uvas. Kikko took great care of us, Carmen makes us feel like family. It's a fantastic place & we'll go back, every time we're in Coz.

Love that place, wish I was there right now, re-entry into the real world, not my friend!

    Have fun.

  9. Lady,

Bless your heart! You were gorgeous and your wedding looked lovely. Wish I could have been there! Thanks for the photos.

    Tis,

Sorry, I didn't get back on here quick enough to answer your question! I see that you got things resolved anyway!

    ************

The year is ending badly for me. My old dog (almost 13 years old in people years) passed away yesterday. I've been totally sad ever since...even though I still have two wonderful dogs, two cats, two mini-donkeys, and three horses...

    Stir,

So sadened for the loss of your baby. My family has always said that if they were to die, they'd want to come back as a pet in our house because we just love them so much.

    Remember the good times.

    Take care.

    Teresa

  10. Hey Stir, I emailed Carmen & Eduardo & still haven't heard back from them (it's only been 5 days, Christmas holiday perhaps?) Anyway, I was beginning to panic a bit as there are 13 of us hoping to get in for our trip on the Ecstasy (in 2 weeks) any other email addresses for them? I used the one on the web & the one that Carmen gave me & I also used the link you gave already. I fell in love with this place in October & was really hoping to share with my friends.

    Thanks,

    Teresa

  11. momma and tisabee,

Glad to read that ya'll enjoyed Playa Uvas!! The long walk was a good exercise for me after all the food I ate on the cruise!! lol :)

I thought that it was good exercise too! Loved that place & can't wait to go back!

  12. We too were there w/Momma2Ruby! LOVED IT!! There were no more than 4 of us on the beach at any given time. Fabulous! We loved the snorkeling, there were what like 10 in our group? That was great, current was a bit strong but the fish were amazing. I enjoyed seeing the underwater caves, lobster & stingray. Didn't see the eel that our guide saw, however, he took a picture for us, we'll see. The service was impecable, it felt like you had known the staff a lifetime. I loved that. I'll be back in January with a group of friends. Should be a great time.

    Any questions?

  13. I have read on a couple message boards that you should bring a Bungee cord along to keep balcony curtains/door open. Is this nessasary on the Conquest? Thanks in advance for you help.

We took a small bungee for our April 15th cruise on the Conquest, but, didn't need it. We were on the Lido deck. Loved our cruise on the Conquest, have fun!

We were on the Conquest (Lido deck) back in April and did not need a bungee as our door stayed open by itself. It's a pretty small item & packing one just in case might not be a bad idea. Enjoy your cruise, we had a terrific time on the Conquest!

Thanks for posting those links. Very interesting. I really enjoyed the links for the water temp & wave heights also. Will really be looking at those the closer our trip gets. Once again you have given us something creative and fun to fill our days during the countdown.:)

  16. i appoligize i didnt realize that your sail date was that far away. If that is the case then you have way to way the pro cons, on everything!

Sorry if you felt that i was trying to lecture you....i had orginally thought you sail date was tight around the corner.....April 07....anyway good luck on your choices...and i will keep my mouth shut from hear on out.....so i dont upset someone!

KcFanNindy, you have been so helpful to sooooo many of us that I would just ignore Gumballz! :p I'm sure that I'm not alone out there!:)

  17. The excursion was booked thru Carnival, they take you down to playa del mia beach (?) it was around $79 per person and included is the beach, all you can drink alcoholic and non, plus food. For the cooking class, you pair up with your better half, and drink lots while preparing a 3 course lunch and having plaenty of laughs. After you have cooked they serve you the food you cooked with a few glasses of wine. we cooked mexican sooes, fish fillet with mango sauce and rice pudding towers.

    I would recommend this tour.

Sounds like lots of fun. How long were you cooking (& drinking;) ) how much beach time did you get?
