I was trying for find a last minute cruise on Oceania for either next month or April but everything I look at (that I would want) is wait listed. I was looking at Princess too but the ships are so big.......

Elyce, have you sailed on the the new Discovery? Are you happy with Princess?

Hi Lois.  I have been on the Discovery and it’s a nice ship, just like all of the Royal-class ships of Princess.  Yes, the ships are big, but they’re not behemoths.  I generally like Princess but I felt that the food quality has dropped off a bit (it was never fantastic in the first place, but reasonably good).

I haven’t been on Cruise Critic for awhile, but I do recall that you were sailing with Silverseas a lot.  You may be disappointed with Princess if you compare the two, which maybe might not be good to do!  I know you used to be a Celebrity regular, but since I’ve never sailed with them I wouldn’t know how Princess stacks up against them either.  But if you’re looking for a cruise that’s not too long, it might be okay to try the Discovery to see if you like Princess.

I had my own table in Polo and know several solo women who always had their own table. Personally, I prefer sharing so I only had my own table once. I think the challenge is that the tables for 2 (which also are the tables for one) in the speciality restaurants may go quickly in the reservations so if you want a table for one, you need to make those reservations as soon as your reservation availability opens up.

I've only been on the Regatta (but boarding the Marina this coming week), and the cruise I was on was 3 legs. On the first day of each leg, there was a solos get-together and a lot of people came to it. On the first leg, the social hostess also did a solos luncheon. On the 2nd she said she was going to do a dinner, but never did. On the 3rd leg, we probably had 25 or 30 solo women. Many of them had traveled solo before on O's Insignia on the world cruise. O seemed welcoming to me of solos, but didn't do a lot to get the solos together, that had to be done on our own initiative.

Thanks for the feedback.  It’s good to know that they don’t treat solos like lepers, which was the impression I had come away with.

  3. Hello!  From a couple of different sources it was indicated that Oceania isn’t very welcoming to solos in general (one of the examples was not wanting to seat a solo at their own table in a specialty restaurant).  Can anyone who has sailed solo with them give feedback either confirming or refuting this?  I was looking for a step up from Princess and was considering Oceania, but not if they treat solos as “less than”.

All I can tell you is that if you are planning a river cruise on The Nile, unless Uniworld replaces the ship they have now, go on Viking's new purpose built Nile ships.

We were quite disappointed in the Uniworld ship on the Nile (Sphinx)  after hearing how opulent and beautiful Uniworld ships were.

Thanks, but the Nile wasn’t even under consideration.  I’m interested in Europe but haven’t yet narrowed down specific regions and/or rivers.

  5. I’m curious as to whether there were major differences between Uniworld’s “River” and “S.S.” boats?  I know that the “Rivers” are older.  In addition to that, are there noticeable differences in general condition, comfort, facilities, room size and configuration, etc. between the two classes?  I’m considering them as a possibility for my first river cruise and would like feedback from anyone who can make a comparison.  Thanks in advance!

  6. I’m the person who originated this thread and subsequently was upset while on my cruise on the Discovery in January because there was a screw up with Princess and my reservation was lost.  So it turns out that this “squeaky wheel” got the grease (read upthread for an explanation) because Rafael managed to do some schedule juggling and got me a spot on the last night.

It was a really unique and memorable experience and I couldn’t imagine anyone but Rafael as the host.  That man has more charm in his little finger than most people have in their whole body!

Consider yourself very lucky to have been asked to attend this unique experience.  You will soon understand why it is called an experience rather than a dinner.  It is true some guests are called at home while one gentleman got his phone call while on the way to the airport.  Our contact was done once onboard, and we were not in a suite.  Rafael is amazing and with a wonderful personality!  His training of his servers is top notch.

  8. Funny you should post this now.  I’m currently on the Discovery and had a reservation for tonight, or so I thought, because someone pulled some strings to get me an invitation and I got the phone call from someone at Princess to set up the date and time.  I got concerned when I didn’t receive a confirmation with details by yesterday, so I called Guest Services and to my dismay they had no record of my reservation!   Someone screwed up somewhere and I’m extremely disappointed.  I happened to also voice my displeasure with one of the assistant dining room managers tonight at dinner, and he called the 360 manager to see if there were any openings.  There weren’t, but I was put on a waiting list in the event there was a cancellation during the remainder of the cruise.  I’m not holding my breath.

  9. I know that this "experience" will only be for suite guests when it goes fully into effect, but ccertain passengers are receiving invitations in the meantime.  I'm wondering if these passengers are all suite guests, or if they're extremely well-traveled on Princess?  Maybe VIPs in the industry?

I have no illusion that I would ever get an invitation, but I was just curious and would like to hear from those who have attended as to whether they fall under one of these categories.  Thanks!

I think there was an option somewhere in the booking checklist of what paper printed documents you want delivered to your cabin. We selected the Princess Patter and Important Documents and have gotten them delivered to our cabin every evening. You can also pick them up at the service desk. We've been on other cruise lines where the App was so clear and fast that there was no need for paper copy. But everything on the Princess App is implemented so poorly and hard to navigate that we believe the printed copy of daily events is indespensible. Restaurant menus are not available on the Princess App at all and display extremely slow on the cabin TV. We were on another cruise line and were able to quickly examin on our cabin TV the dinner menus for the entire week such that we could book in advance the Specialty Dinning on the nights we did not like the main dining room menu.

Just out of curiosity, what was the “another cruise line”?

On all our cruises this past year they’ve had the scones, jam and cream offered in the buffet at 3:30.

Thank you.  Glad to know that!  Was that every day, or only on sea days?

We have Elite tea time in our cabin and order only scones and tea.  No sandwiches.  You can only take what you want in the tea time MDR.  Or, on sea days some of the Royal class ships have the scones and jam in the buffet.  You’d have to ask the Lido manager on your sailing.

Thanks.  Unfortunately I’m not Elite yet, so I can’t take advantage of in-cabin delivery.  I’ll definitely get an answer from the Lido manager.

The afternoon tea on Princess is not the kind where they put a big tower on the table.  Instead servers bring around scones, cakes, sandwiches etc.  You can take what you like and skip the sandwiches.

I know that.  I’ve sailed with and had afternoon tea on Princess before.  My goal is not having to sit through everything else (sandwiches and cakes) and going right to the scones.

  14. I love the scones, but don't really need the rest of the little sandwiches and pastries that come with Afternoon Tea.  I was wondering if the scones (along with the jam and clotted cream) were available at that time in the World Fresh Marketplace -- Possibly the Pastry Shop?  Has anyone seen this?

  15. I'm looking for the whereabouts of a particular server named Patricia, a petite redheaded woman from Poland.  I've seen a couple of references to her working on the Discovery and was wondering if she was still on and, if so, in which dining room?  She was extremely sweet when she waited on me on the Emerald back in January of 2019 and was hoping to find her on my Discovery cruise next month.
