Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. I hear ya. I've had my beard since 1992. In all that time, I shaved it off once. And it couldn't grow back fast enough.
  2. And not really caring whether a cruise line chooses to give the crew free internet is not a crime against humanity. Lighten up.
  3. Par for the course around here....plenty of folks complaining that whichever cruise line they are complaining about (obviously Royal on this board) is unethical, lying, fraudulent, etc. And by God they'll stop cruising with them once the (1, 2, 6, etc.) cruises they have deposits on are done! The sunk cost hypocrites are quite comical. "I have a $500 deposit that I'll lose, so I'd much rather give another couple grand to a fraudulent, unethical company than put my money where my mouth is and eat the deposit."
  4. Supply and demand....if people are willing to pay that kinda money for those chairs, it would be crazy to not charge that much. @GetToLivin I have a feeling you'll have just as much fun "slummin' it up with the crowd below as they'll be having in those seats.
  5. All I can say is I've been there. Before my herniation/surgery, I was running 7 miles a day, 6 days a week. Afterwards, I measured my progress by how many times I could walk up and down the hallway of my house before my legs were to weak to keep going. Best of luck to you on Thursday, I hope you find some relief.
  6. Spirit of Christmas time... This lady and her husband came into our shop yesterday about 2:00. There's a direct door into my (shared) office, so she walked in and asked if we could make a roasting pan. She had a little piece of paper with dimensions and all that. She had someone lined up to make one but it fell through, and she went to a couple other places close by and they gave her the "we don't have the time" brush off. I asked her when she needed it by...she looked down and kinda shyly said "Saturday??" Being the Thursday before Christmas, we had plenty of people out early, and more not working today to make a longer weekend. So I sent her over to our sales and production office, gave our salesman Mike a heads up that a very sweet lady was coming around with a huge ask and said to him if there's any way we can do something to make a good Christmas, let's make it happen. I walked over to the other side of the shop and saw her talking to Mike. Our folks were already on it. Our programmer was drawing something up, our production supervisor was looking for a scrap piece of material we could make her pan out of, and our brake press operator was getting his brake set up. Cindy (the lady) was tearing up....she told us that her husband was in stage 4 cancer, and this pan was for roasting a pig for a big party Sunday for his mom. She asked how much it was going to cost, and we told her it won't cost you anything....Merry Christmas. She cried some happy tears. We told her we'd call her in the morning when it was done. So this morning one of our welders welded it up, put some handles on it. She and her husband came in to pick it up....she brought cake for the gang. There are plenty of days in my job that really suck. In the 21+ years I've been working here, this may be the best day I've ever had. That's gonna be some pig. When you get a chance to make someone's Christmas...just do it ๐Ÿ™‚
  7. @Sea Dog Please wish Linda a happy birthday from Andi and me! Merry Christmas to all of you as well, I know you'll enjoy the long weekend!
  8. Exactly...I knew you'd know more than most what I was talking about. The reason my spidey senses go on overload every time I hear someone talking about back problems and numbness and/or muscle weakness.
  9. Long story for me. I had back issues for about 15 years off and on (bouts of pain that would last a couple weeks, then would go back to "just" discomfort), until "the big one" happened in September 2001. I herniated L4-L5, and over a couple days my legs got very weak and numb. Couldn't urinate. Could barely walk. I went to see a doctor at 10AM on that Friday. He poked and prodded and sent me for an MRI. When I got back to his office, we sat down and he told me about something called Cauda Equina Syndrome. Basically, my disc herniated right into my spinal column, and was blocking off all the nerves going down my lower body. I can almost recall what he told me, word for word..."The surgeons next door are prepping for you. Of course, you are free to get a second opinion. But I'm telling you, if you don't have surgery right now, you are risking permanent nerve damage, including paralysis." I was in surgery by 2:00 that afternoon. L4-L5 laminectomy. They say if you have surgery within 48 hours there is a decent chance of spontaneous relief of the nerves. I was outside that window (more like 72-96 hours). Spent a couple months basically learning to walk again. Legs were so weak I couldn't lift them up high enough to walk up stairs. Used a walker for a couple months, then a cane for a few more. Nine months before I got back to work again. Fast forward to today and my back feels like it did when I was 18. Rarely have any back issues at all. Still have some saddle numbness and have foot drop in my left foot so I wear a brace most of the time. But daily life is normal. There's a lot of things I can't do (run, jump), but I don't measure my life by those things. I am so lucky and grateful I saw a doctor who knew immediately what was happening and did what he had to do for me. Deep sense of gratitude for the doctors and nurses who took care of me for the week I was in the hospital.
  10. Is there a chance they'll make it? Of course there's a chance, but it's really cutting it close. I've been at my gate at both FLL and MIA by 8:00 plenty of times. Their only real hope is to be one of the first off the ship. I wouldn't hesitate to book a 9:30 flight from either. I'm definitely not one of those "NEVER book a flight before noon" people, but even I wouldn't chance an 8:40 departure time.
