  1. Here are some tips.

Windows based laptops/computers are always trying to download updates. Turn this feature off, on all devices, unless you have fast, unlimited internet access on the ship.

Set your email to NOT download images.

Unsubscribe to all the crap emails that fill your inbox on a daily basis before the trip. Oh, and change your email password right before the trip. Change it again when back home.

Depending on the device, download an app that lets you download info such as news articles, save, log off, then read later offline. Something like Pocket from an app store.

Read and Respond to emails while offline, then log on and hit send. Log off.

Avoid signing into important things...like your bank account or credit card.

Sending/receiving photos on a ship without FAST internet connection is almost hopeless, wait until you get home.

Cell phones....Turn off roaming or put in airplane mode to avoid charges while traveling internationally, or, purchase a month-long International plan with your phone service provider. Accepting, as well as sending, text (especially with photos) will incur incredible costs without an international/roaming plan. Some people use a social site that includes messenger, to text over internet in order to send important messages.

Use internet during slow times...early morning or dinner time.

Bring your own paper if printing airline tickets the day before departure. Most airlines print out 7 to 10 sheets! Most ship internet printers are paper-depleted with no one in sight to replenish on the last day.

Never forget to log off if paying for minutes individually. Go to Guest Services if you forget. They usually give you a credit.

  2. We are booked on the Star TUESDAY :) May 23, 2017 --- 11 day Cruise Tour from Fairbanks to Vancouver Southbound.

The Star passenger count is 2600 vs Coral at 2000.

The ship is larger, and seems to have more room for the venue.

Just my personal experience I like the larger ship.

I'm with you. Literally. See you on the ship. :D:D:D

  3. Thank you for the feedback. We also prefer a larger ship as there is more happening. So I will stick with the Star then. We have been on the Sapphire and really enjoyed it.

Having done both the Coral and the Sapphire, I also prefer the larger ships. Personally, it seems the larger ships disperse the population better without feeling crowded. I did love the intimacy of the Coral while in Panama Canal, but, disliked the crowding and waiting in line for.....(pick one)

I chose the Star for my Alaskan cruise next year. Let us know how you liked it.

  4. we are planning to do a land and cruise to Alaska with RCCL or Princess. Can you give me some tips? Did you do land first and then cruise. Was there a lot of walking in the land portion? Where do you go on the land portion? How expensive was the food on land portion? Were there a lot of extra excursions which you paid extra for?

I know I am asking a lot of questions and would be thrilled if you can help us. We are debating between Princess Cruise lines and Royal Caribbean. THANKS!!!

Do you want to go to Glacier Bay? Land first is more expensive, but the hustle and bustle of packing/moving/transporting is out of the way. Most people would rather have a shorter flight home, others like going northbound first. It's all about personal preference.

  5. Has anyone experienced a non-Windows based computer/laptop on Princess? Is it any quicker NOT downloading those updates?

Just purchased a Chrome notebook and wonder if it might be quicker?

On past cruises, I noticed it helped when I programmed my email not to download images. Any other tips?

  6. Not sure of the chances of a flight being cancelled at either location due to weather, but I guess I'm one of those people that would try it at the first stop. That way if it's cancelled, you might have a chance at the second??? But be aware, those types of excursions can sell out quickly. If you choose to go that route, be sure of cancellation policies if you decide to book both.

  7. I have posted this to the correct thread and after a couple of months I have had no reply.

Does anyone know if it is easy to get a cab at the Cape Liberty pier to Newark airport?

I'm doing self-assist walk off and would like to just walk up to a vehicle and go. Money is no object...helicopter out of the question. :p

  8. If your cruise includes time in Vancouver, you can eat king crab fresh rather than frozen... nowhere in Alaska does anything other than frozen king crab during cruise season, there's no overlap with the very short crabbing season.

If you're big eaters you might be able to do justice to a a full king crab feast here: 3-5 courses all using the one crab that gets plucked live from the tank at the start of the meal - smallest are usually 8-10lbs which provides for about 2 pounds of crab meat added to various different dishes.

Once you've had an actually-flavoured-during-cooking leg instead of just steamed, frozen and reheated it's really, really hard to go back though!

Frozen crab...does that include the cruise ship?

  9. The excursion leaves from Bobbys marina which is a ten minute walk or so from the port.

You shouldn't have trouble getting a taxi from there to Maho. Best case scenerio you get to Maho at 1:15. If you need to be back by 4:30 you still would have a hour or so to enjoy Maho. It shouldn't cost more than $40 total in taxi fare so if it's something that you want to do it's doable. Some folks will tell you that you could leave at 3:30 but I wouldn't stay past 2:30 so I couldn't recommend leaving after that.

Checking the flight schedule the week before for your date will give you an idea of what planes will be landing during your stay.

Great information. Do you have the link of the flight schedule?
