  1. Hey Frequent floaters! My name is Joshua and I work remotely for a software company. Since I can work from anywhere with good internet, I've been working aboard Royal Caribbean ships for a change of scenery (6 Cruises last year, 12 this year). I've found Royal Caribbeans internet to be the best in the industry, however, there IS a difference from ship-to-ship within their fleet. Not all "Voom" internet is the same. They use different satellites based on geographic location AND based on the technology on the ship. And it's all marketed and priced as if it's the same. It's not. 🙂 Here's where you come in--I'm trying to compile a Ship List that will expose which ships have REAL Voom Internet (fast speed, low latency/delay, O3B Network-BEST) and which have NOT-REAL Voom Internet (moderate speeds, high latency/delay, SpeedCast Network-Just Ok). A speedtest from the wifi-connected device will reveal this on the ship. The NOT-REAL Voom internet operates much slower as the delay from ship to satellite is 650+ms whereas the REAL Voom internet operates around 200ms. This is most notable when doing video calls like Facetime or Zoom or playing videos on Facebook/Youtube. For me, the internet is my life on the ship. Here is my list so far. SHIP Adventure--NOT REAL Voom (as of Jan 2019 Thanks @John&LaLa) Allure--REAL Voom (as of Nov 2017) Anthem--Coming Soon (Sailing Aug 2019) Brilliance--NOT REAL Voom (as of Jan 2019) Empress--NOT REAL Voom (Thanks @Ourusualbeach!) Enchantment-- Explorer-- Freedom--REAL Voom (as of Dec 2018) Grandeur-- Harmony--REAL Voom (Thanks @Ourusualbeach!) Independence--REAL Voom (as of April 2019) Jewel-- Liberty-- Majesty--REAL Voom (Thanks @Ourusualbeach!) Mariner--NOT Real Voom (as of July 2019) Navigator-- Ovation--REAL Voom (except when in Alaska, then terrible internet) Oasis--Coming Soon (Sailing Dec 2019) Quantum-- Radiance-- Rhapsody-- Serenade--NOT Real Voom (Thanks @John&LaLa) Spectrum-- Symphony--REAL Voom (Thanks @Ourusualbeach!) Vision-- Voyager-- LOCATION/ITINERARIES Alaska--Real Voom NOT available regardless of Ship Technology (O3B network isn't available above aprx Vancouver Lattitude) Caribbean--REAL Voom Available depending on Ship Technology Bermuda-- Canada/New England--Sailing August 29 on Anthem Panama Canal-- Mexico Pacific-- Meditteranean-- TransAtlantic-- MiddleEast-- For what it's worth, I've asked Royal Caribbean for clarification on which ships have the O3B Network Technology ("Real Voom") and they declined to answer. If you've been on a recent cruise, or are on one now and did a speed test or asked the IT manager, would you help me update this list? Here are two examples of speedtests through Ookla's Speedtest App, showing the difference between REAL Voom and NOT REAL Voom. Would you help me out?
  2. Updated SHIP Adventure--NOT REAL Voom (as of Jan 2019 Thanks @John&LaLa) Allure--REAL Voom (as of Nov 2017) Anthem--Coming Soon (Sailing Aug 2019) Brilliance--NOT REAL Voom (as of Jan 2019) Empress--NOT REAL Voom (Thanks @Ourusualbeach and @John&LaLa!) Enchantment--REAL Voom but potentially slower--ship pipe/bandwidth more limited (Thanks @twangster and @serialcruiser48) Explorer-- Freedom--REAL Voom (as of Dec 2018) Grandeur--NOT REAL Voom (as of April 2019 thanks @h20skibum) Harmony--REAL Voom (Thanks @Ourusualbeach!) Independence--REAL Voom (as of April 2019) Jewel-- Liberty--REAL Voom (Thanks @Biker19) Majesty--REAL Voom (Thanks @Ourusualbeach!) Mariner--NOT Real Voom (as of July 2019) Navigator-- Ovation--REAL Voom (except when in Alaska, then terrible internet) Oasis--REAL Voom (Thanks @Ourusualbeach) Quantum-- Radiance-- Rhapsody-- Serenade--NOT Real Voom (Thanks @John&LaLa) Spectrum-- Symphony--REAL Voom (Thanks @Ourusualbeach!) Vision--NOT REAL Voom (Thanks @Ashland) Voyager-- @serialcruiser48 I'm considering a B2B2B in Jan on the Enchantment. Any first-hand experience on how low the Enchantment internet would dip in terms of bandwidth with the limited pipe?
  3. Sailing on independence this weekend. I can’t stand formal things; dress shoes make up tights blah blah. I have two kids who are also unbothered. I just read a thread on here commenting that people who sail out of Southampton really go for it on formal nights eg tuxedos. my question is, does everyone dress up? What sort of % don’t? If it’s 50/50 then it doesn’t bother me to stay in my trousers and tops combos in the windjammer as I don’t do the restaurants anyway....but if I’m going to be the only one looking dressed up I may have to pack a dress! Can i I have the benefit of your experiences on this ship out of Southampton pls?
  4. We just did this in July. If you are coming in just the day before, I would suggest staying in Southampton. We stayed at the Holiday Inn, which is just a short walk to the port. We used National Express Bus service to Southampton, and pre-booked it online. They run every 2 hours from the airport, and they are probably the least expensive way to get there. It is about a 2.5 hour drive, depending on traffic. We used International Friends for our post-cruise transfer to London. If you want to read about our experiences, I did a live review. https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2678896-live-independence-italian-med-713-727-european-vacation/ Enjoy your trip on Indy
  5. Sailing on independence this weekend. Looks like you can’t book Grease or the ice skating shows ; or can you? If not, how much of a scramble is it? How early would I need to turn up to get four adjacent seats? thank you for your time and help!
  6. Playmakers on Independence is on deck 4, not on the Promenade. At least on Indy it's a large place, no where something like that would fit on the Promenade.
  7. We dress smart every night and on Formal nights probably 75% of men wear suits or Tux out of Southampton. We have sailed several times on Independence from Southampton most recently end of May. Personally on RCCL I now leave a Jacket at home and wear a long sleeve shirt and tie with cufflinks and dress trousers with smart shoes. Hope you have a great cruise.
  8. Some depend on location, and if they activate O3b Independence- Jan, 2019 Caribbean Independence - July, 2019 Mediterranean from Southampton Grandeur - April, 2019 Bermuda
  9. I have never sailed on Independence before, can you tell me what kind of shows they put on and do you need reservations for them. On the Allure you needed reservations.
  10. And have you sailed on the Independence out of Southampton recently?

  14. Hi Travelling with a friend on independence out of Southampton this week. Next door rooms but separate booking references as two different rooms. Question - we both want voom on two devices each ie four devices total. It it is cheaper for me to book voom for one adult four devices at 18.23 Gbp. But the royal Caribbean system when I’m trying to add that to cart is only showing an option for me and my child (sharing my room) to use that voom. Is is it a code they give out? If so will it only work if the device is in my room , does it somehow know my friend next door is using my code? Or doesn’t it matter? thanks!
  15. Our last TA on Independence from Southampton was a 180 degree shift from sailing in the Caribbean. I would guess 75% were dressed in a Tux or Suit, also saw more Kilts then any time in the past. Last sailing in the Caribbean there were shorts and T'S in the dining room on formal night. Kudos to Brits that get dressed for the occasion.
  16. Hi were going on a 3 night cruise on Independence of the seas at the end Aug looked on the app and can't see a showing of Grease, on there does that mean it won't be on those 3 days ? Thanks
  17. My fiancé and I are looking to book a JS Balcony room for our honeymoon and we have narrowed it down to 2 balconies. I thought we were going with 9638, but I just found that the piano from the suite above may be loud. Any insight on 9638 or 9264 would greatly be appreciated. Also, do all JS Balconies have 2 lounger chairs? thank you, thank you 😀
  18. While I do try to give myself a lil wiggle room since I’m on vacation, I try to drink Captain & Coke Zero. They had Coke Zero on my last 2 cruises on Independence. I hope they have it on Adventure in October.
  19. Follow along with me, on this, our first trip across the pond. For the next two weeks, plus, we are getting our first exposure to England, Spain, France, and Italy. It it is a good sign when you look out your window, and see your ship waiting for you.
  20. My daughter and I are booked to go on Independence of the Seas on 8 October of this year for 11 nights. Looking at my Cruise Planner yesterday, I noticed they had the R Refreshment Package on offer for just over £18 per day, so after speaking to my daughter, I decided to book it this morning.......only to find the offer is over and it's back up to original price of £23.94!!!! All my own fault...I am so mad at myself!! Apparently the offer was only on for 7 days - 2-9August!!! 😢😢😢😢. Does anyone know how often Royal Caribbean do these offers? Are they likely to do another one before we sail in October? Or do they just do them randomly?
  21. Hi, please can anyone tell me what storage there is for the 3rd and 4th person in the lounge ? I can see pictures of the wardrobe and drawers for the master bedroom but I can’t find any details of what storage there is in the lounge area. Just thinking i may have to bring a clothes rail for my kids. On other sailings there has always been a double wardrobe in the lounge but I can’t see anything from the pictures on line. Also so does anyone know of what the benefits are staying in this suite or are they the same as staying in other suites. If if anyone has any pictures I’d really appreciate it. Many thanks
  22. And YES the baby in the photos is staying home..... 👍🐍Just like the other question, family going on Feb 13 Independence to Cozumel and back, so that is a closed loop cruise, 6 kids 26 - 28 getting off the boat renting RTV’s etc. (yes, I and hubby are staying ON the boat, LOL). Do we need passports... I hate to ask a similar question, but it would be lovely for the poor kids did not have spend the extra. $ , they will never use a passport again They all work so hard , and of course, have bills beyond belief, I am paying for their cruise, they are really good kids, I am blessed....Thank you friends....
  23. I know Gold Card Suite passengers are offered a made to order breakfast in Chops on Independence of the Seas. Is there a made to order lunch for suite guests in Chops or is it just a sitting area to eat your Windjammer meal?
  24. In the next seven months, I will earn an Oasis and Majesty that I need. I am also working on a trade for Rhapsody. Those 3 will get me to 23 . What I will still need are the Empress, Independence, Legend, Quantum, Sovereign, Spectrum and Splendour. .
