Norwegian Jewel ocean view cabin question

Hi all

We are looking at a cruise in Asia 2018 and would like people's opinions on the Norwegian Jewel.

Two adults and our 8 year old Daughter. We have cruised on Royal Carribean, P&O and Carnival. So far out best experience has been Carnival followed by P&O, that is service and food not ships facilities so much.

We are happy with ocean view rooms but are a bit worried about the noise from the floor above. We are looking at level 5. Has any one stayed in the ocean view rooms midship on the jewel if so was it noisy?

Any comments on the food and service would be great as well.

Thanks

Mark

Hi Mark:

We were on the Jewel in May 2016. We were in either room 5526 or 5528. I only have access to the deck plan right now and not our actual booking documents.

We have sailed on the Jewel twice since then and even though we ended up in a balcony room each time, for an outside room we would not hesitate to book the 5526/5528 room again. It was quiet and the room is in a great location for all kinds of reasons.

IMHO for all three cruises the service throughout the ship was stellar and overall the food was good.

Hi Janet

Thanks for your response, sounds like you really enjoy the Jewel.

Can I asked with the casino above, was there any noticeable noises that would keep you awake?

Also was the third bed a convertible sofa or a bunk bed.

Thanks again

Mark

Hi Mark:

I shouldn't try to do anything from memory...I checked our actual cruise docs after reading your post and we were actually in room 5062.

And yes we like the Jewel. We live on the west coast and so into 2017 at least, she is the easiest NCL ship for us to access. We are actually booked on her again for this coming in April.

Midship Oceanview, Deck 5 on the Jewel (and, similar ships like the Gem or Dawn) should be fine and relatively quiet, easy access to Deck 7 (Reception/Lobby) and walk 2 floors down while in the ports (usually midtown gangway for going ashore) ... unless you need to use the elevator. Some of the "Insides" would be over the gallery for those pax, they might hear some noises in the morning & evening when preparing to open & closing up after dinner - but no loud music. Sound insulation is good enough that you aren't going to hear heavy footsteps of anyone running around above ... I don't think the ones near the casino & bar/lounge on deck 6 will be terrible either (not your loud, rock-n-roll band playing into late night, more of soft/piano & solo singing, etc. that's usually done by a certain time).

As for bedding, all of the oceanviews have the 3rd bed as a pullman that drop down, there's not enough space for a pullout/sofa bed conversion - Google for videos of the Gem/Star/Dawn/Jewel Oceanview staterooms on Youtube & you will see. Bedding for a 4th guest would be a trestle bed that's normally stored/unused under the main beds - and, would be a bit tight but doable for a family with younger children (compared to the typical OV staterooms on CCL or RCL, the ones in this class of NCL ships are smaller by a noticeable margin, but still bigger & roomier than the *Away class mega ships)

Here's a picture of our OV (port-hole/ Fwd - Deck 4) on the GEM, but practically identical except for the bigger picture window - noticed that the 3rd. bed is pulled up against the wall as there's only 2 of us. And, we asked the Steward to move the bed against one wall.

Hi thanks for your reply. It's just the three of us so it should be big enough.

We where just a bit worried because on Carnival we had the red frog pub above us with a tiled floor and you could hear chairs scrapping and the live bands. It was very loud and went on to 1am.

Hi Janet

we tried booking 5560 which is right next door to the one you had but it was not available so we have gone for 5552. Only negative is that it is a interconnecting cabin. Hope those internal doors keep the sound out.

Regards

Mark

Hi just another question, can anyone please tell us if they have stayed in the ocean view cabin 5510 forward or near that forward area. It seems to be above the conference centre. Does anyone know what the blank area is on the deck plans between starboard and port?

Thanks

Mark
