on the back of the cabin door it will tell you where your muster station is located

usually the GDR or Horizons etc

then you will be taken to the boat deck where your life boat is

They will warn you a few mins ahead of time so you can get ready to retrieve your life preserver

The life jackets in your cabin will have the muster station printed on them, there are instructions and a map in the cabin, the drill takes place before you leave port on the first day, and there are multiple warnings.

Once it begins, the corridors are full of staff telling you where to go. Take a book, or seize the opportunity to make friends with your neighbours, who will be at the same muster station.

Count on the whole thing taking a half hour, and if your muster station is a bar - ours was Martinis - they won't be serving drinks.

I look at these things as being a learning opportunity. Even more than on a plane, every ship, every cruise is different, and if - god forbid - something happens in the dead of night, I want to have a clue as to where to go and what to do.

Yes, it's usually a little bit before the ship leaves on first day. However, if you're in port overnight, it may be the next day. If you're planning to go back out on embarkation day after checking in, you can ask when you need to be back on the ship for the drill.

Second muster drill today. No muster, drill is over the PA system. No going to muster station.

Lou

How does that work?

I have never experienced a muster drill over the PA

Sometimes there is a crew muster drill and passengers don't need to participate. Maybe that is what the OP is referring to.

Also, don't take a book to the muster drill, unless you don't mind leaving it in the lounge and risking losing it. You will be carrying a life preserver and then putting it on and standing VERY close to other passengers on deck. At that point, you are not supposed to be carrying stuff to entertain yourself.

Oceania still makes you take the life jacket and stand in heat. No other line does that I have been on.

More than once I have shown up without it just like in real life I be outside the cabin.

Viking Ocean stores all life preservers by the boats, with none in the cabins. Some people really had a hard time accepting that, but to me it made sense.

Quite honestly, I don't have a problem attending a muster drill - with or without life preservers, with or without having to stand under lifeboats outside when it's hot. The muster drill is not just something that cruise lines have to comply with, it's for our benefit. An emergency at sea is a serious matter so I take muster drills pretty seriously.

I take hem seriously- more so than many. I hate standing outside in the heat. no reason to as long as you know where your tender boat is. but the life jacket makes me laugh as if in a bar or eating you will not be going back to your cabin for it. so what is he point of bringing it. then at some point you have to go back to cabin to leave it on your way to sail away, the bar etc. wonder how many people ever just leave it and walk off.

If you ever have the misfortune of being in an Emergency situation with a large group of people in an enclosed space, you will never again question the lifeboat drill procedures.

All the foolish people who were thinking about the heat or the inconvenience or if the life jackets are really necessary run around in a panic like chickens with their heads cut off, endangering their lives and the lives of others.....simply terrifying .

As my grandmother used to say, "a word to the wise, is sufficient".

After eighty cruises watching people talking and texting I think I know a good drill. I have been on seven cruise lines abd my least favorite is this cruise line and Regent. Same parent company.Celebrity and Azamara are the best, Crystal makes sense. The other lines were years ago so I left the drill back there.

So what I don’t understand is why are you here? There are various cruise lines I cruised in the past, but don’t now. Therefore I never go to their CC boards. Do you still cruise Oceania?

Greetings from South Beach, Everyone. I grew up spending summers on a family boat that slept nine. My father followed the rules of the Power Squadron back then. We each had a life jacket and knew where it was. My mother even made a life preserver out of cloth and kayok for our dog. Every once in a while, without warning, we had to get our jackets and put them on by ourselves. If we'd had to really escape, it would have been into our dinghy, a rather ordinary occurrence,

Wrong! The Crystal Symphony drills are at your muster station and you must wear your life vest. On the Serenity it is usually done in the casino and Starlight. The butlers and stewardesses do check the cabins and suites. If you don’t attend and not checked off you will get a letter to attend the no shows.

Will be on Sirena.

When and where is it held? Do you have to bring your life vest to the drill?

Thanks.

Not familiar with the Sirena. On the Riviera we did have to bring the vests with us.

I think Cunard does as well. That line takes the drill more seriously than many of the other lines. I thought Oceania did a good job. Just sitting in the theater watching a video like on Celebrity really doesn't help. You really need the hands on demo.

You bring your life jacket on all ships and put them on at the drill. On Marina and Riviera you do NOT have to go out to the lifeboats themselves but on the "R" ships you do.

We just had a boat drill on Riviera yesterday so this info is pretty current. Our last "R" ship trip was in October 2016 but we have always had to trek out to the lifeboats on the smaller ships.
