We were there earlier in the month on Pacific Eden. It was our first stop and it was our least favorite, but it was still interesting. When you walk off the ship there are lots of people and vans running tours for 25 AUD/pp. The quality really varies and the one we did was not so great. You can also just walk right into town or take a taxi for 5 Kina. We liked walking around the local market and the local shops and just getting a feel for PNG. It is a bit grimy of a town, but still good.

Let me know if you have any other questions I can help with. We absolutely loved our PNG cruise - incredible destination!

We took the ship excursion to the festival. It was a lot of market stalls, local tribes dancing, canoe rides and a museum. On the way back we asked the bus driver to drop us off in town (they are not supposed to and will say no in front of the tour leaders who usher you onto the bus, but then will stop and open the doors at the Milne Bay Memorial and let you off if you wish). We got off here and looked around the memorial and more markets, then walked back to the ship, its not far. Take lots of water, sunscreen and insect repellent, it will be very hot and humid no matter what time of year you go.
