Tell Me Why.....

Try it because there is no formal night.

Can anybody tell me please - why not having a formal night is a good thing? What is wrong with dressing up for the occasion? It really confuses me why this is seeing as a positive (not just here, in many other posts as well, especially where people promoting/raving about smaller/luxury lines?)

I’m retired that does not mean I want dress like a slob, what I does mean I want to dress in nice clothes but not like I had to for 50 years every day! Plus with airline restrictions on baggage I don’t need to pack more stuff, if folks wish dress to the 9’s that’s fine go for it. Business casual is what I prefer!

Many change for sparkling water.

Unless you want a specific brand of bottled water, sparkling water is available free 24/7. A carafe of water is left in your cabin twice daily; you can request sparkling water instead of or in addition to still water. Sparkling is also available in all of the dining rooms; just ask. I have even gone to the bar and requested a glass of sparkling water.

The Silver Spirits package is the beverage package and it’s $20 pp per day. Both people have to get it.

Yes the ship are all pretty much alike. We were recently on the Viking Sea and it was awesome.

Wow, that is cheap (used to $55 pp/pd on Royal Caribbean).

And, thanks for the ship info.

Now just hoping the cruise line has contract rates for the airfare as it is NOT CHEAP to fly from Florida to either Athens or Rome!

I don't mind dressing up, but, I think the dress code of these ships is perfect and, assuming I book, am looking forward to not hauling my formal gowns, shoes, etc. with me this go-around! Especially as we have to fly.

Airfare rates are always published along with the cruise fare. Sometimes, you are lucky and can get a really good deal and other times it might be cheaper to book your own. When you book (unless you are within 3 months of sailing), take the air fare and then see if you can do better on your own. It is easier to cancel the airfare before the deadline than to try to add it. And, what you save on the booze package will off-set the increase in airfare.

The 2 for 1 deal Viking has in their brochures is the standard price. What you have to watch for is the air deals. They do change often.

Something else you should do is pay for Viking Air Plus. It $50pp and it allows you to work with their custom air department. Do some checking and find the flights you want, then you can call them and likely get the flights you want. It really is worth it, unless you want to end up traveling at odd hours with strange itineraries.

In any case if you decide you would rather do your own flights, you can cancel anytime up to the deadline (which they will let you know)

I’m very outgoing and my DH not and Viking was great match for us. We’ve met quite a few couples where I and one of the other spouses will chat away and our better halves would smile to each other with understanding smiles :halo:

BTW, we just booked our 3rd cruise with Viking! If I could only survive Air Department :(

I have to agree with the comment on working with the air department. We had a frustrating time getting different answers from different people each time we called with a question. And then got charged an extra fee for coming in early and Not needing to get picked up at the airport! With as big a company as Viking there are always going to be glitches and they can’t make everyone happy all of the time. The air travel portion of the booking process has so far been the only issue we have had. Having traveled with Viking on their river cruises we are looking forward to a great time on ocean.

Snomane - it is going to be a fabulous trip that we will be on to the Amazon. I believe you will love the Viking experiences. Unique ships, great crew, lovely staterooms and baths, good to great food.....see you on board. Let’s connect prior regarding those two ports if you are interested

Try it because you are tired of mindless entertainment.

Try it because you don't need a casino.

Try it because you are sick and tired of the nickel-and-diming.

Try it because you can live without other people's children.

Try it because you are more interested in the ports of call than in partying until dawn.

Try it because you are never asked to pose for photos.

Try in because you like cruising among friendly people.

Try it because you are invited to BYO wine, beer or other potables.

Try it because you don't have to hide in your room to drink your BYO.

Try it because there is no corkage fee in the dining rooms.

Try it because specialty dining is included.

Try it because you are sick and tired of the nickel-and-diming. BUT the gratuities are not included Very strange

I totally agree, Stevanb, the gratuities definitely should be part of the package!

We got off the Star last month, our first cruise on Viking. Had a lovely time..did have the SS beverage package. We were in the Adriatic, and most included tours were fine.

Our next 2cruises will be back on Celebrity for a Caribbean cruise, in a suite, so no nickel and dining..all is included. We do enjoy more activities in the evening and my DH loves the casino..so we found Viking a bit quiet at night. Had a couple of good shows, but other than that we usually didn’t get out of dinner, 2 X’s in Manfredis, 3 x’s in the Chef table, loved it and waitress Jennifer was fantastic, til 9:30, had a drink at the bar and back to our cabin. So yes we would probably go on Viking again, at a fantastic price, but really enjoy Celebrity.

Something else I can not understand there are 22 shots in a liter bottle at cost of lets say 9.00 SO they have to store 22 bottle of beer and lets say each 4.00 .

I asked if we can get credit for excursions against liquor they said no. We really do not need them in the Caribbean.

Before anyone says anything we have travel on Silver Seas and Crystal many times . The whole thing just seems strange with Viking

We had a hold on Viking in Nov until we found out and now we are on Celebrity maybe in Europe it would be different with the tours but in the Caribbean after 30 years of traveling not needed . Just off Holland as we wanted to go to Havana is was great wanted to go before he might change rules again

I am so glad I found this thread.

We are considering booking a Viking Cruise even though we can not book one of our beloved low, amidships, inside cabins. (yes, there are people who do prefer inside cabins for a variety of reasons).

I have a question about the spa. Are spa treatments (massages) included in the fare or is there a fee?

Spa treatments ( massage, facials etc) are for a fee. The use of the Nordic spa area is included. It has stream room ,snow grotto, three kinds of cold showers areas, a small pool and whirlpool, four heated tiled loungers, and other padded loungers around the pool. In each of the locker rooms (Men and Women) they have a dry sauna.

I’ve liked Celebrity for the activity but I just wish they had some smaller ships. After Windstar and Viking the crowds are just overwhelming.

What seems strange is that someone would think a cruise line would trade shore excursions for drinks? Seriously??? [emoji849]

Well on other cruise lines they let you pick the options you want. It seem like Viking in not all inclusive like other 5 star lines we have been on

Yes. Oceania for instance has its OLife promotion, where you chose (prior to the cruise) if you want excursions or beverages (wine/beer w/ meals) or OBC. Regent, on the other hand, includes excursions but there is no opt-out option for a credit.

I don't know that I'd call Viking a five-star line, but it is certainly is an enjoyable experience for what it does deliver. Just need to go in with an understanding of Viking's amenities and onboard atmosphere compared to other cruise lines.

Yes Regent has no options but they offer it all Nether does Silver Seas or Crystal which we have been on . We just booked Celebrity and they have options you can pick and choose .

Th reason we asked them was we do not need excursions in the Caribbean if we where going to Europe yes we would .

Hi, I started this tread back in March 2017 and just caught up to recent posts. This thing has gone all over the place.

My answer to “Tell Me Why” is that Viking Ocean was perhaps the best cruise ship experience we’ve had. Oceania’s specialty restaurants are hard to beat but the onboard ambiance on Viking was outstanding. We took none of the included excursions and we were annoyed that there was no discount for opting out of free air transportation, the the ship itself made up for that.
