Which ports are good for just a walking tour?

We start in Montreal. Quebec City is next - I know that's good for milling around. Charlottetown, Sydney, Halifax and Bar Harbour are the following ports. I am wondering which are good for just a walkabout on our own vs. an organized tour.

You can walk the town of Bar Harbor, but if you want to tour Acadia National Park, you will need to take an excursion. It does not have to be a cruise ship excursion. There are 2 independent tour companies that offer tours of ANP, and both have excellent ratings on TA. The tour companies are Oli's Trolley and Acadia National Park Tours.

BTW, the name of the town is Bar Harbor; there is no "u" in Harbor.

Thank you for the info. The correct spelling has a u in Harbour in Canada!;p

They are all good for walking around except for Sydney. There, you might want an organized tour as there isn't much right in town. That said, we have just walked around town a bit in Sydney. There is one main street for shopping and we checked out the shops a bit. We wanted a low key day as that itinerary is port intensive and we needed a break.

Halifax has a waterfront boardwalk which is very good for walking on your own. The Maritime Museum and a number of other worthwhile venues are right there, too.

Agree 100%. You can also walk up to the Citadel which is worth visiting as well.

You might consider renting a car in Sydney and Charlottetown. Very reasonable rates around $30 US when we were there last year. Gorgeous scenery once you leave the ports, and you can go wherever the tours would take you at a fraction of the price.

I agree, Halifax is great for walking around on your own. Sydney is not.

For Charlottetown you should consider renting a car to drive to Cavendish, Green Gables and the scenic drive along the shore in the National Park.

Another vote for Halifax as a walkable town. We enjoyed the Citadel when we visited last year. Be advised that it is a fairly steep uphill walk to get there. It was a pleasant walk for us, but we enjoy walking;)

We've all been to Green Gables so looking for something different. What route would you suggest coming out of Charlottetown for a Scenic Drive that takes in some quaint fishing villages. Beaches aren't really on the top of the list because this will be the second week of May.

I am not a PEI expert but this is a scenic route. North Rustico is a pretty fishing port and Victoria by the sea is full of shops and restaurants.

At Borden Carleton you can see the Confederation Bridge which crosses to New Brunswick.

Stanley Bridge is a fishing spot and there is a nice restaurant there.

There are a couple decent restaurants in North Rustico. One does lobster with all you can eat mussels.

Near Brackley (great beach) is an interesting shop/restuarant called the Dunes.

New Glasgow is up on a hill with a lovely view (and a tourist shop/restaurant PEI Preserve Co..)

Great idea about renting a car! I hadn't thought of that. We are a family of five, so excursions get expensive for us.
