Smoking on balconies.

99% of the time you will see a sign on the balcony door to make sure its closed.

when open it changes the temperature of the room forcing the room to get more air conditioning down the line and other rooms get warm because of it

Do not leave the balcony doors open.

*** Now back to the smoking thread

But when the balcony door is open the air conditioning in the room shuts off. Or is that just on the newer ships?

That is how the system works unless you have a card in the slot...can be any credit card sized card. Your ship card or a Costco membnership card...

I answered that earlier. I was a research engineer in R&D. I actually helped design the original technology currently used in non-tobacco cigarettes.

Years ago my husband also previously work as an R&D engineer in the tobacco industry and worked on exactly the same thing. I remember him mentioning how the liquid nicotine had to be handled. Makes me curious if you worked together.

It is not what you smell that kills you with the non-tobacco smokers, that should be the least of your worries. It is the vaporized liquid nicotine, one of the most dangerous substances know to mankind. Non-tobacco smoking is not a 'safe alternative' to tobacco smoking no matter what the hype of the manufacturers is.

So the second hand smoke danger is a lot less? Excellent! Around here, I think a lot of vapors are using those bigger boxes that someone else mentioned. Unless they're vaping in class (which is apparently also a problem here), they seem to like to create HUGE billows of smoke. Especially when they're stopped at a stoplight or even driving along. Like they're hot boxing or something, except they can leave the windows open. Damn 3 Monkeys smoke shop. They're gonna cause an accident one day cuz they can't see if it hasn't happened already. Almost as bad as the red necks who like to smoke coal (luckily not too many of those in my city, but still too many).

Lots of bad science floating around. Liquid nicotine is poisonous because it is so concentrated. So don't drink it. When you inhale nicotine in smoke or vapor you are getting a non-lethal dose that is just a fraction of what you would drink.

Pure alcohol can kill you faster than 80 proof (40%) alcohol because it's stronger. So, like any dangerous chemical you want to keep it out of reach of children. That includes known killers like Tylenol and vodka. Keep your nicotine juice secure.

Inhaling or vaping the same amount of nicotine has the same effect, and vapers don't increase the amount of nicotine they consume (in most studies). Vapers actually tend to quit nicotine completely spontaneously at a far greater rate than tobacco smokers (some studies suggest some of the other chemicals in the tobacco leaf enhance the addictive effect).

The reason vaping is the lesser of two evils for the consumer is that it's missing some 80-odd other actual carcinogens that burning tobacco has in it. The nicotine is far less of a long term health hazard than the other chemicals in the smoke inhaled. Second hand smoke has been studied, but second hand vapor is just now getting studied. Vapor can contain some dangerous chemicals so I wouldn't recommend vaping around children or people with compromised immune systems. We don't know if it's dangerous to the others, but caution is in order I think.

Wow, what a thread this is. We just got off the Breakaway and dang there was always the smell of smoke .One idiot had to out-idiot the others and smoked a cigar. We were on the port side so it was not from the outside smoking area . I do think there is accountability on the stewards. There is no way the steward didn't enter the smokers room and NOT smell cigar smoke.

I have 2 great solutions.

1. If a steward reports a smoker they receive $100 paid for by the offender.

2. Without a doubt NCL needs to state clearly (and enforce) if your caught smoking you'll be kicked off at the next stop.

Smokers know darn well they are hard to catch and if, in the very unlikely event they are caught, they will get a slap on the wrist and a warning. Screw that, make it clear that they will be kicked off the ship. This alone will be a strong deterrent.

It's so sickening that asshats know their selfish actions affect many cabins around them and have no regard for others . They are pathetic people .

I'm a smoker and agree, smoke within the guidelines and rules set by cruise line. That said I have no tolerance for non smokers who walk in the smoking areas and complain. As long as it's legal smokers and non smokers need to learn how to co exist.

Which is why I never go in the casino...smoking is allowed and I have issues breathing there. I really wish they’d glass in the casino and install exhaust vents straight into the ship’s smokestack. With all these new builds you’d think they’d figure that out and DO it....

I think the biggest complaints from nonsmokers is the smoke wafting out of the casino into other parts of the ship, especially the entrances to restaurants on the newer ships.

Carnival allows smoking in their nightclubs and so I rarely cruise with them....

I still think that smoking should be banned outright on cruises to/from/within the USA much like it is banned on flights to/from/within the USA.

I am surprised Uncle Sam has not passed legislation to this effect yet.

It's because the cruise lines don't want to lose 20+% of their pax base.

We don't need Uncle Sam regulating more then they do and actually I don't think, I could be wrong, that Uncle Sam banned smoking in planes, I believe it was the carriers themselves.

People need to learn how to co exist, there are smoking sections on the ship for smokers to go to and that is where they should smoke, non smokers need to avoid those areas and quit their b!tching about it.

Smoking, gambling and drinking go hand in hand, all three are to some degree an addiction.

This is an absolute crock as far as cruises. There are TONS of folks like me who do NOT gamble in the home towns but want to on vacation.

I would NEVER have more than one cocktail in my hometown, especially if driving. But with the drink package, and before with gift bottles of wine I would indulge.

Hardly addictions. But enjoy both when on vacation.

Never smoked in 60 years though.

I think I am not alone.

Ditto for me. I don't gamble at home, even though there are casinos close by, but will go to Las Vegas or gamble on a cruise. I don't drink and haven't had a cigarette for 35 years.

Also, the last time I was in Las Vegas, I noticed how many gamblers (slot machines) didn't smoke versus those that did. Times are changing and more and more people have stopped or never started smoking.

Last March we were on the Breakaway and a person below us was smoking non-stop. I went to guest services and reported them (as well as taking pictures). They said to call next time I saw it and I did. A representative came to our room & I showed them the ashtray on the balcony. I don't know what happened to the smokers (fine or warning) but the smoking stopped. In my opinion, I have a right to enjoy my balcony smoke free.

While that's not their policy, they do have a $250 cleaning charge for each incident of smoking in your cabin or on your balcony. I guess they use their discretion if someone repeats the violation (it's their ship so they can put you ashore).

It sounds like it wasn't enforced on your cruise. But the rules are there.

I'm still waiting for cruise lines to enclose a smoking area in their casinos if they refuse to

make them smoke free . Or they can enclose the whole casino .

This is on them , not on the smokers . I'm now satisfied with the limited smoking areas on ships but Norwegian still won't enclose casinos .

This isn't the fault of smokers or non-smokers but NCL . $250 is just fine for a first offense

but only if it is actually enforced . I did like another posters suggestion of a bounty on illegal smoking reported by staff . It may however effect tips .

The Bliss has an enclosed ‘smoking casino’. If it works out well, expect to see them on new ships moving forward.

Still smoking on my past cruises. Had a cigar smoker in the area last trip that made balcony difficult to use at times. Can be hard to tell at times where it can be coming from and I get leary of reporting a neighbor. Can just cause more trouble

I've been fortunate in my last few cruises that I have not smelled smoke on my balcony, and yes I would report. I play in the casinos, and while it is present, I know it is allowed and it doesn't bother me too bad. When someone lights up right next to me it can be overpowering, so I might get up and move to another machine. Only bad thing is that my clothes reek of smoke afterwards so any chance of wearing something again is no longer an option. Vibe on Breakaway was filled with smokers. Smoking is allowed at the bar only, but the smokers would be at the bar and then about an additional 6 feet away from it. It didn't bother me since there was always wind wisking it away, plus I was having too much fun/alcohol to care. But that trip, I'd say 80% of the regulars in Vibe smoked. The only place recently where smoke detoured our route was on the Getaway on the Waterfront. It was filled with smokers, and you basically had to walk through their plumes. We walked out there, went about 10 feet, turned around and went back inside

Which clubs? I've been on a couple different Carnival cruises in the past couple years and the only place I saw smokers inside the ship was the Casino and the cigar bars (not even sure if the cigar bars were on Carnival). Certainly never saw smoking in any of the other public areas.

ALL nightclubs, just not on the dance floor, which doesn’t have a magic curtain around it, btw. That is just to keep idiots from wavng their lit cigarettes around and burning people.....which has happened to me.
