My humble NYC parking instructions !

Since this is a very common question, I will try to give you MY take on parking at the Manhattan cruise terminal.

Is it expensive ? YES ! Is it easy of use ? YES ! Is it worth it ? YES !

Would I park in a nearby parking lot and save between 40$ to 90$ for the week ? NO!

Why then ? In my case I have a long...very long drive back home and I want the easy use of my car as soon as I leave the ship and the hassle free parking solution that the Pier offers me is a "good value" still.

How to "use" the terminal parking :

For the latest rates and information you can "clic" on this link to the official NY Cruise terminal : http://www.nycruise.com/manhattan-terminal/parking/

More often then not, traffic will be monster when exodus happens. On the map you will see a black line over 12th Avenue (9A) in the NORTH direction where the traffic is the worst. This is caused by a heavy carload coming from the Lincoln Tunnel as almost all cars will turn left on 42nd street and then right on 9A NORTH. This heavy traffic will make you loose around 30 minutes just from 46th street to 55th street where you can turn left and enter terminal.

The better way, if you are arriving FROM the South, is arriving on 55th or 57th street via 10th avenue because you can enter the terminal directly from both of those streets.

Ok now you enter the terminal...excitement builds up...you are so close to the ship and that cruise you have been planning for months if not years !!! and yet you are so far away...

The far right lane is for buses ONLY, you must use the "all cars" lane on the left and go up one level.

2 choices are now in front of you :

1- you hang LEFT and enter the Terminal Drop Off zone. You can go there to drop passengers and luggage. The only problem with this is that you HAVE to exit the terminal at 46th street and then you have to engage in traffic and go up to 55th and turn left again to enter AGAIN the Terminal and make your way to the parking.

2- You go up the ramp one level and right away make a right and go up the ramp to parking level. ( this is the preferred way suggested by the NY Cruise Terminal ).

I am sorry about the poor image quality.

You can clic on the image and zoom on it to have a better look of the pointers I did.

So if you visited the drop off level before, just go and park ! Voila ! let the vacation begin !! Do not forget to take picture of the ship, you in front of the ship, etc... Make your way to the freight elevator and go down one level to security and check-in....YES your are now on vacation!

If you opted to go to parking level directly ( the better choice ;) IMO ) and there is NO queue behind you, you might IF POSSIBLE pull right just after the dog and QUICKLY drop passengers and luggage. This is very close to the elevator and there is a sidewalk there. If there is a queue or you are instructed to, just park in the nearest available space and roll your luggage to the elevator. Worst case scenario, you are not that far anyways. Get the elevator ( sometimes if a porter is helping someone with their luggage TO the parking lot, you can get him to help you FROM the parking lot and take your luggage to the check-in area for you..with the 2$ per luggage regular fee of course ). You go down one level, exit elevator to your left and make an other left to reach the porters and hand them the luggage. You get back in the terminal and make the line for the security/check-in ....

VOILA ! Let an other, or first, amazing cruise begin !

When we cruise we always go with "self debarkation" and exit the ship in the first group. This way we avoid a long line at the immigration counter and we walk fast to the elevator to reach the parking level. Normally we reach the parking level within 15 minutes of leaving the ship....and we are on the road for 7 hours to get back home !

I hope it helps, I made it the most accurate I could...If there are some problems with it I will update it.

This post, IMHO, should be made a sticky. An excellent description (with visual!) of how to park at the NYC port.

FWIW, when we parked there, it was quite easy to pull up after the sniffer dog, er, sniffed our car, and stop to unload luggage. Basically just took us the amount of time for the next car's inspection to unload the big bags, and then I parked and gathered up the last stuff at my parking space.

WOW...

That's awesome!!

Thanks...love the photos, and the illustrations!!

MODS, can you please sticky this photo essay on getting into the lots at the piers in NYC? Thanks

I agree, I've often wondered why Carol's (138east) directions to Bayonne aren't stickied.

Thank you all :o

All I hoped was to not get flamed because I wrote something wrong or ...whatever.... so I am pleased with the warm welcome !

Talk to you all later !

Plus that info is really helpful, well thought out and even I could probably NOT screw it up....

It's easy for people to see and understand....

so thanks again...

I should TRY and take some pix entering Cape Liberty this weekend, but eh, probably not gonna happen....hard to do that and drive at the same time..

Excellent! I've gone out of NY once before but we had a car service. This is so helpful as we will be driving this time. I kinda remember some of this path but from a car service perspective. When we went to the intrepid a few months ago we parked for a few hours at Park Right. Thanks!

Is there any charge for cars just dropping off or picking up?

No. However, as a general rule these days cars are not actually allowed to enter the cruise terminal to pick up passengers. You have to meet your ride across the street.

I agree that this is very helpful information. I park at the NYC piers whenever we cruise from there and it is very convenient, especially when disembarking. You go up in the elevators and your car is there. I would add that I generally drop off my wife and our luggage on the second level (not the parking level) before I go back out onto 12th Avenue and then go up to the parking level. This usually does not take long at all, and I do this in case the parking is at a different pier (say Pier 90) than the one at which my ship is docked (say Pier 88). This is rare, but has happened to me in the past.

One question I have is how they handle parking for back to back cruises. We are doing that on the Breakaway 9/28 and 10/5. I know there is a cap at $400 for parking for long cruises, but how will they even know I am staying on for the second week? If I don't say anything and pay the $280 and then go park, how will they be able to tell I am staying on? I will just be another car in the lot. In the old days, you used to put a receipt of some kind on your dashboard that showed how long you are parking for, but that is not done any longer.

Can you park on Saturday for a Sunday cruise? We are staying in a hotel Saturday night and don't want the hassle of moving the car Sunday morning.

Thx!

No. The parking lot will only be open on cruise ship arrival/departure days.

We are staying just a few blocks away from the cruise terminal. Is it easy enough to walk into the cruise terminal or better to take a taxi in? I've never cruised out of NY before...

Thanks!

The distance between the streets are pretty short, but the distance between the avenues are much longer...if you can be a little more specific on your location it would be easier to give you an idea...

Not sure how big your group is or how much luggage you have, but I would walk over from that hotel to the Manhattan Cruise Terminal.

In the link, you will see the directions to Pier 88 (MCT).
