Just off the Azura and yes it is Captain Hoyt...'fraid I wasn't impressed but then again Captain Robert Camby is such an hard act to follow

Why weren't you impressed, did he do something wrong or are you comparing personalities with previous captains?

Spotted a reference to this today in the press. Don't know who it relates to.

I bet Azura fails to dock in Marseilles until it's resolved, it could cost the local economy Millions if Carnival decide not to send ANY of it's ships there.

We have just returned from Azura & we didn’t see Captain Hoyt at all. We got 1 announcement per day off him & that was it. I believe he was attending the gala night but that seems to have been his only appearance the entire cruise. Obviously his most important role was to keep us safe & get us there & back without issue which he did. It is the 1st cruise we have been on where we never seen the captain at some point on the ship.

Never come across Captain Hoyt, but we find that the Captain makes a big difference to a cruise. We aren’t bothered about seeing them around the ship (they probably get sick of idiots asking “Whose driving the ‘boat’ Captain?” because, of course, that’s the first time they’ve ever heard that howler), but we like to hear them announce interesting information.

On our first cruises with our all time favourite captain Chris Wells, he did every noon announcement (with really interesting information), provided info as we approached and departed ports, announced when dolphins were visible (which makes a Cruise for many people, especially children), did horn blowing competitions when we passed other cruise ships, did Q&A sessions in the theatre where passengers were allowed to ask questions, was around the ship and would stop to chat etc etc

Over the years, we have noticed the Captains become more and more ‘distant’, delegating almost everything to more junior officers. Of course, their primary concern is being master of the vessel and ensuring safety etc, but good ones can do all of this in addition. Also, if they are starting to have foreign captains with strong accents / poor English, then that’s another aspect of ‘Britishness’ that made P&O unique gradually disappearing.

Captains have in the past also become Chief Executives and their responsibility and workload has increased and they are now responsible for nearly every aspect of the ship not just the seafaring side.
