Anyone live from the Zaandam? If so I have a question!!

If anyone is live from the Zaandam, how is the Crow's Nest? Some reported it was being transformed into the new EXC Center during the recent dry dock and others have said differently.

Thanks for any help you can provide,

Tom

I will on the Zaandam next month and will be doing a comprehensive daily review here on CC as well as a photo review on my website. Currently, I am collecting questions seeking answers.

I'll be checking for your review. We will be on Zaandam in July. I would like to know if there is still self-service laundry.

This is incorrect. Zaandam is still within the fleet. The ships transferred to P&O were the Ryndam and the Statendam.

And to further distinguish the Zaandam, she does belong to the R class of ships and not the S class are those two, as you mention, that got sold to P&O. Therefore, the Zaandam is relatively newer and a bit larger than those two older ones now gone from the HAL inventory. Zaandam belongs with the Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Volendam class of ships. Still fairly robust and sea worthy.

Of that R class we do like the Zaandam best of all - decor and layout wise- no added cabins, no lanai suites, library still intact (???). So it will be interesting to see what has changed since our South America cruise on her a few years ago.

Don't mess with success would be my only advice. But of late HAL does not seem to be listening to me.

I'm on Zaandam, per Captain's question and answer this morning: All new carpet received has been installed, new tile and Lido Market in Lido, the self-services laundries have been removed and made into cabins.

He mentioned the Crow's Nest, but didn't say exactly what was done. - but I haven't been up there and couldn't compare it anyway - no previous cruise on this ship.

A couple more requests:

Is the dedicated Explorations Cafe and Library lined with bookcases still there?

Is the Explorer's Lounge where they have the classical Adagio duo perform, now a hard surface multipurpose space, or still a a comfortable carpeted lounge space?

Thanks. Interesting to learn the laundry got converted to an inside cabin.

Have all rooms on level 3 been changed to shower only?

Are the hands on cooking classes offered in the America Test Kitchen?

Would love menus from main dining room. Husband does better if he can pre-plan before we leave for cruise.

List of daily activities would be nice for planning purpose. He likes to be educated about the area and loves the cooking sessions. Go drinking or casino in his plans.

They really took out all the self-serve laundries? Does that mean there is no place to iron your own clothes?

Unfortunately, that's precisely what it means. :(

You either have to send your clothes out for pressing, or use one of the make-do measures that involve steam or wrinkle removers.

Although, as a 4 star Mariner, this issue is moot for me, I still find it unconscionable. Is there no end to these cost savings/revenue enhancement measures? Obviously this is intended to promote the ship's paying laundry business and, at the same time, generate more revenue with the additional cabins. The self-service laundry was a vital service to many guests, particularly on long voyages, and will be sorely missed.

Thanks for the updates.

Do you happen to know if the rooms have been upgraded to include the new interactive tv system or do the rooms still have the old tv’s with DVD players?

NCL do not have self-serve laundry. From what I read on CC, a steward can bring an iron and ironing board to your cabin for a limited time.

I'm wondering whether any of the ocean view cabins on Lower Promenade deck were converted to lanais? We love our lanai cabins and heard that the Zaandam might be getting them. We are booked to sail on Zaandam in January.

However, on Holland America there are no irons to be used in the cabins---neither furnished by HAL, nor brought by the passengers.

Only those few cabins listed [on another thread] have the new showers. Mine does not - I wish it did. Bathtub sides are really high.

Old TVs with DVD player - at least in my OV room.

No lanai staterooms on this ship.

Is the full book case-lined library still there?

Do you have a link for "Cruise News?" We will be in a C cabin on the Main Deck. I appreciate any information you can find out.
