Hurtigruten is introducing two new hybrid powered Polar Expedition Ships designed by Rolls-Royce in corporations with Kleven Yards of Norway for polar expeditions. The goal is to reduce fuel consumption and CO2-emissions on the ships by 20 percent by sailing with electrical propulsion.

MS Roald Amundsen will be launched in 2018 while her sister ship Fridtjof Nansen will be launched in 2019.

The ships will be the most modern and the most sophisticated expedition ship ever, specially designed to explore polar waters and reach new exciting destinations.

Comfort and beautiful Scandinavian interior, with elegant furniture and comfortable exterior. There will be 265 cabins on 6 decks for 530 passengers - all cabins are outside and 50% are with balcony,

A total of 9 decks with 3 special restaurants, indoor/outdoor observation deck, explorer lounge/bar, interactive activity center, large fitness room, pool deck with infinity pool and two jacuzzis.

More details in the video from Hurtigruten below.

The itinerary program of MS Roald Amundsen, includes expedition voyages to Antarctica and Chilean fjords during October to December 2018, and Antarktis in January/February 2019.

On Fram!

These, in my opinion, are simply too big for an 'intimate' polar trip bearing in mind that only 100 are allowed to be on land at any one time. In some locations, even fewer. And 50% with balcony? Most of the time it's preferable to be outside on deck when not ashore. Whales don't always appear on 'your' side of the ship!

According to e24.no Hurtigruten can confirm that delivery of MS Roald Amundsen, will be delayed until 2019 and that they will cancel around ten sailings in the Antarctic, which hit up to 3,000 passengers.

Passengers will receive full refund - including charges for any cancellations of airplanes. In addition, they are offered discounts on other trips with Hurtigruten.

Always good to be evironmently friendly, but in my opinion way too large for expedition cruising. It would take forever to let everybody have a chance of going ashore. For one landing it is then 1 1/2 to 2 hrs ashore and the rest of the day waiting on the ship. Better to have 100 passenger ships with multiple landings per day.
