Sewing Clothes For A Cruise

I'm not sure if this photo works, but I finished my Love Notions Cadence. I'm planning this for one of the "smart casual" nights on our cruise. The cut is really simple but the fabric is a lovely looser weave with a sheen to it. I'm making one out of linen next as a cover up / easy wear day dress.

This question is about fabric. I love to sew for my up coming cruise. The trouble is finding the right fabric. We have only Joann's. Which does have some nice fabric. But the store is lacking some of the prints that I would like to have. Trying to find a good on line store seems to be OK with goggle. But I really don't know the vendors.

Here is my main problem I really don't know know fabric types. I can read about fabric types, but not the same a touching the fabric. I can feel the fabric in a store, see the weight, sheerness of it to.

How do all of you buy on line fabric?

I will admit that the only fabric I have purchased on line is stuff for quilting, but it was material that I had before (Northcott) so I knew what was coming. I am fortunate that I am just a 20 minutes drive to Ottawa St in Hamilton ON if the Fabricland near me doesn’t have what I’m looking for.

We have a very random fabric shop near where we live. The last time I went I fell in love with a white and pink Lycra and when I went to buy it the assistant in the shop wouldn’t sell it to me as I didn’t know what I was going to make with it!!!

I’ve purchased a lot of fabric online in the last few years. Some stores will send you sample swatches, which helps a lot. Otherwise, I will go to Joann’s and look at fabric content and weight to find similar fabrics and see how they feel. It’s still not foolproof, but it helps, and after a few purchases you’ll start to learn what you like. If you’re looking for knit fabrics, I can recommend a few really good sources if you’re interested.

Redlady62. You are lucky to have a great fabric store near you. Majors cites have a lot more to choose from.

That is crazy that she would not sell you the fabric. One time my brother went into a local pizza parlor and want a couple of slices to go. He told the man that he would heat them up in the microwave. He would not sell the pizza to my brother until he promised that he would not heat it up in the microwave. She said that he did not want his pizza to taste bad.

Last year I did make a pair of wide leg pants, that the fabric was wonderful. It would just never wrinkle! But I don't know what kind of fabric it is. I will take a piece of fabric back to Joann's and see if they know what it is. I really need to learn about fabric and pay more attention to what the bolt says.

I'm working on Cadence dresses from Love Notions this weekend - one as a pool cover up and one as a smart casual dress for evenings.

Same ... I'm even thinking I want to make something semi-related to the evening dance parties: ruffled crop top and palazzo pants for the latin fiesta, Studio 54 pantsuit for disco night, stuff like this:

I like have one of a kind clothing, that is one of the reasons that I sew some of my cruise clothes. I made a day time skirt out of parrot print fabric that I brought a Joann's. I put it on while I was on a cruise. That day I walked across the pool deck and walked straight towards a man wearing a shirt out of the same fabric. We looked at each other and laugh. His wife made him the shirt for the cruise! It was really funny.

I love both patterns that you are going to sew. Now, I would wear the pants, when I was younger I would also wear the tops. They are both great patterns.

Good morning everyone. Spent the Canada Day holiday at the outlet mall in Niagara on the Lake, where I can usually find running and hiking shoes [emoji148] for my big feet at the brand name store for less than at the specialty shoe store I patronize. We stopped in at the Eddie Bauer store and I actually fitted into a shirt that was on promo and advertising as Adventurer II Shirts - lightweight, high-performance Hikers & Travelers. Also provide UPF 50 sun protection

They used a fine mesh for the inside of the back yoke (I should know the name of that fabric but it escapes me now) and the fabric is very light. There use to be a fabric / adventure store in Calgary, AB that carried the UPF fabric, will check and see if Peak fabrics might have that type of fabric.

Ah, a sewer after my own heart. I love pattern review! I should have mentioned that I lengthen those tops until they just graze my hip bones. ;)

I just patched a small hole in a pair of pants that I made a while back. DH says it looks good. But I might put a pocket over the patch to really hide it.

That's ridiculous. Many times I buy the fabric first because it "speaks to me", then I select the perfect pattern afterwards to showcase it. I'd be finding a different fabric shop myself but maybe I'm just cranky :')

I new to branch out. I have a light fabric that would work with either pattern.

I am finishing up a pair of cotton blend pants. My question is what kind of hem stitch do you use when sewing. I think I will just use a straight stitch. In the past I have used a blind hem stitch. I like the look of the blind hem, but it is a pain to take out later if I want to lengthen the pants in a year or two. What stitch to you like to use?
