Anyone else notice similarities between cruise ships and casino resorts

Something interesting that I have noticed is how similar the overall experience of going on a cruise ship is to visiting a casino resort. Obviously excluding the clear similarity in that both have legalized gaming, it seems like cruise ships really on the same sensory overload techniques that make most large-scale casino resorts successful (buffets/numerous dining options, live entertainment, nightclubs, bars, foreign staff, flashy design). Also interesting is how the casino is always at the literal center of any ship I have ever been on. It almost seems like cruising evolved because of casino gambling. I would almost go so far as to say that it seems like the modern cruise ship would not exist without the casino. Has anyone else (especially those who gamble frequently) made these same observations on their trips?

If you think about, both cruise ships and casino resorts are designed around the same basic goal: Having a captive audience.

A casino resort wants to keep their customers in the resort as much as possible...hopefully gambling as much as possible. So they add the other bells and whistles to keep the customers in the resort.

A cruise ship has the same need, but for a slightly different reason: The customers literally cannot leave, except in ports of call. So the cruise ship has to provide the same variety of bells and whistles to keep the cruising customers happy.

However, I don't think the casino operation is as central to cruise ships as are the multiple bars, restaurants, shows and activities. There are good examples of cruise lines without casinos (Disney ships, NCL's Pride of America) that are very successful for other reasons. And there are plenty of cruising customers who never even go into the casino on a cruise ship.

Not if you think Casinos are the money makers on a ship. Not all ships have casinos. And cruising evolved from liners that actually got people from one place to another.

But yes, I do think casinos do add a lot to the atmosphere on a ship and wouldn't cruise on a ship that didn't have one. There's no easier way to strike up a conversation than by sitting down at a black jack table and instantly being in the same team as the other passengers, and the dealer, who also hopes the dealer busts.

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO Ny Alesund: Going on a cruise ship is not the same as going to a casino resort. First, cruising came about as a means of travel to get from point A to point B. Even after WWll there was no airline that made money bringing passengers from place to place. Airlines didn't start to overtake cruise ships until the mid '60's. In fact back on those days you had to dress for dinner. There weren't that many things to do on a ship. In the '60's cruise ships had to change or go out of business all together. My wife, who went on some cruises in the '70's informs me that the casinos on a ship were not that large. Many of the games they have in a casino today they didn't have. Not every line had a casino on board a ship. When casinos became popular then the cruise lines made them larger in response to demand. Not if we build it they will come. Also, when you pay your fare for the cruise you get many things included, (meals, shows, movies). You go to a casino resort you get your room. Meals you get on your own, want to see a show, not included.

Your assertion that a cruise ship would not exist without a casino is false. Viking line does not have a casino. Nor does any company that does river cruising. And neither does Disney Cruise Line.

I understand that some cruise ships do not have casinos. However, it seems that such vessels are in the minority and have much higher fares (i.e. Disney) in part a result of this. When I go to a casino, I typically get most if not everything comped (rooms, meals, shows, drinks, etc). I know not every patron gets this, but this is part of the reason why I have noticed a similarity. Even on cruise ships many passengers are there (comped) because of an offer extended to them by a land based casino. While I would not argue the fact that many cruise ships (historically) existed for transportation purposes, it seems like many cruises that have become popular (i.e. trips to the Caribbean from US ports) have passengers who are not too interested in the ports of call and are more interested in what there is to do on board. This is especially prevalent on some of the larger ships that RCL and Norwegian have recently built.

Unfortunately, this https://www.cruisemarketwatch.com/home/financial-breakdown-of-typical-cruiser/ lumps bar and casino together, but obviously the casino is not the reason to operate a ship. People expect a casino, just like they expect live music and towel animals. Otherwise it's not a "real cruise". Personally, I'd feel that the ship was missing something if there was no casino.

The $6 betting general public asking the dealer if they should split fives can't possibly pay for the premium space on the ship, nor the dealers who need to sleep and eat and would like some salary as well.

That's why you get your free cabin.

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO Ny Alesund: Do you have any statistical evidence to back up your claim that a casino only exists on a cruise ship to be a profit center for the cruise line? When an NCL ship or a RCL ship pull into port do passengers sit in the now closed casino waiting for it to open again?

I don't really think this is what you are saying, but I often get that 'cruise ship' feeling when I spend a few days at a casino resort. There is something about standing on the upper level of Mohegan Sun in CT that reminds me of looking over the rail out to sea on a cruise. And just like on a cruise, I rarely leave my casino resort unless it's for a short excursion. Getting up for breakfast in a nice restaurant, followed by laying by the pool, a quick lunch and some afternoon gambling, then a beautiful dinner followed by gambling and a show. I follow the same itinerary whether at the Palazzo in Vegas or on a ship at sea.

When I cruise without a casino, I truly feel a bit lost as it is a large part of my cruising experience.

No quite the contrary. This is exactly what I am trying to say. I feel like going to a casino resort like Mohegan Sun or foxwoods feels very similar to being on a cruise and vice-versa for all the reasons you pointed out. It just seems so obvious but is something that most people do not realize. Most of my family members love to cruise but do not care to try visiting a casino resort when I invite them to come with me.

Howdy Casino Player,

I so cuncur with you !

Most people do not usually have STATS well , a normalcy , it is just loquaciouis palaver..

I thought people did wait for the Casinos to Open with Baited Breath and Baited Hands oh no are we Shad fishing?

You well know National PIE Day no not 3.14 day.. but National Pizza day is 09/05/2018 now acoming.

How many do you know for that are waiting at the doors?...

One good example in this small municipality , we have nine banks, five ice cream parlors, and five pizza places. The one with the municipal name had a wonderful PiZZa sale and could not handle all the business they did not even answer the phone lines. A Pizza oven can only bake a finite amount of pies. Even the owner said to me, " next time he was going to get more ovens and have them outside in the little lot.". Guess what.. He never had another Sale that way eh..So no waiting at the doors.. :halo:

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO AAAAmerican: I am glad that you concur with me. Usually someone that makes such a claim has no statistical evidence to support their claim. Can hardly wait for 09/05. Love Pizza day. You have some of the most interesting little known facts in your posts.
