A dress code story...

If Basil Fawlty was wearing the correct trousers, he would still take them off, hand them to the maitre' with instructions to take them over to the querying table for proper scrutiny.

He would probably add a pair of spectacles to assist them with their deliberation.

Right you are DKP946, Charleyben and lincslady, and anyone with your sense of humor. Ridiculous and absurd situations such as the one escalated foolishly by the maitre d’hotel deserve commensurate responses. Sure, marching up to restaurant’s front desk and just offering up your trousers (see, lincslady, pants must stay up and in place), and just pretending to remove them would have set the scene for a memorable moment of embarrassment, no doubt followed by a good laugh from all, including the maitre d’. I expect that he or she would take it in stride if for no other reason that for you, the customer, tension relief is in play, replaced by something light!

Happy and healthy sailing!

I’m male. Sorry, English isn’t my native language. I only just figured out the Australian meaning of ‘thongs’ 🤣

Haha, I am Australian and have had to adopt the worldwide preferred “flip flops” to save embarrassment and confusion

I am a bit confused I have seen women in white jeans with high heels and a beautiful top on other luxury lines being escorted to their table where jeans were “Technically Not Allowed.” I know this discussion is about a man but what gives? Say a gentleman comes in with black dress Versace jeans and so dark you really have to feel the fabric to tell. Then what? Most luxury lines have relaxed their dress code except Silversea they still have formal nights.

If one looks dapper and well groomed who the heck cares. Heck, I don’t even pay attention to what others are wearing as we are on holiday. If you are having a drink with us and look brilliant in your attire I would compliment you but I certainly would not say anything to the staff about what others are wearing. Very gosh.

When I think about jeans, I usually picture denim jeans in my mind. I think parsing white jeans and white slacks could get a little too up close and personal.

I can’t wear white anything as a wine drinker or sauce will end up on it. White is not my favorite dress day or night. But I have seen other ladies in white jeans dressed extremely elegant and can pull it off and not ask to change.

So whose definition of "a little too up close and personal" should we adhere to? Yours? Or mine which is mind your own business and worry about what you are wearing, not me.

wripro, I never worry what others are wearing! My point was that there is little difference between women's white slacks and women's white jeans and if you get close enough to decide which she is wearing, you are probably a bit too up close and personal, LOL!

The maitre’d had such horrible judgement and decision making skills in this particular case...it’s hard to believe.

Anyway, I wanted to say that jeans nowadays are rarely denim. Truth is most are a combination of elastane, viscose, or some other synthetics and cotton. Very far from denim of yore and not much different from dress slacks/pants, except perhaps when in a 5 pocket, typical jeans style.

I personally enjoy wearing dresses for dinner, yet I observed many ladies wearing what looked to be casual pants or perhaps even dressy jeans on my recent August cruise in both the MDR and TK. Denim was absolutely worn at night in the Colonnade. It didn’t taint my experience in the least.

Glad to hear it. Sometimes the mind boggles at how much tim and emerge is devoted on these boards to other peoples' attire.
