Lisbon: Rising Star, Key UK News Tips, Ideas!

Terry, I can offer a suggestion of a fabulous private tour in St. Peter's Port on Guernsey. This was an unexpected highlight of our two week cruise in the British Isles last summer. We joined a group from CC on a tour with Annette Henry - https://annettehenrytours.gg/. We walked through the beautiful city, then went to the museum. The island was occupied by the ****es during WW2, and after they left, a boy started to collect things they left behind and he now runs the Museum. It is truly a must do on your cruise. Enjoy! Cheryl

Great idea and follow-up from Cheryl. Appreciate this specific suggestion. Will check out more in later March after we get back from doing a 15-day Ft. Lauderdale to San Francisco sailing that goes through the Panama Canal. We depart Feb. 28. This "adventure" will give us our first visits in Colombia, Central America and Mexico. Been busy reading lots on the history of the Panama Canal, etc.

THANKS! Keep it coming with the great sharing. Very helpful. Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

From our Jan. 25-Feb. 20, 2015, Amazon River-Caribbean combo sailing over 26 days that started in Barbados, here is the link below to that live/blog. Lots of great visuals from this amazing Brazil river and these various Caribbean Islands (Dutch ABC's, St. Barts, Dominica, Grenada, etc.) that we experienced. Check it out at:

From the Associated Press/AP and GulfNews in the middle east today, they have this headline: Travel to Lisbon, the land of fado with this sub-head: "You don’t need to speak Portuguese to appreciate these melancholy ballads."

Much of this story is all about: fado, a Portuguese folk music tradition that blends the drama and rhythm of flamenco with the sentimentality of a torch song. You don’t need to speak Portuguese to appreciate these melancholy ballads. They are songs of love, loss and longing, rooted in Portugal’s seafaring culture, which for centuries has bid farewell to sailors, not knowing when or whether they’d return.

This writer noted you can "LIVE LIKE A KING" in this country. The writer noted: "Portugal is on numerous 'where to go' lists for 2017. Among those planning to visit this year is the pope, who’s expected in May for the centennial of the miracle at Fatima. Portugal is also one of Europe’s most affordable destinations. Metered taxis were so cheap — a few euros per trip — that we never bothered with city buses or subways."

Looking forward to enjoying Lisbon is just a little over two months starting on June 10. Lots of good details in this profile on food, entertainment, etc., options. Below is more on our just completed trip through the Panama Canal, doing San Francisco, etc.

From the London/UK Daily Mail two days ago, they have this part of a headline: “See Europe's key cities without breaking the bank: Cheap escape to Lisbon with these highlights: Exploring some of the top sights in Europe need not cost a fortune. With its lofty hills, sun-blushed streets and exciting food scene, Lisbon is hard to beat. It's full of charm — century-old trams, baroque architecture and the Tagus waterfront. Arty abodes and cosy cafes are inexpensive. TOP TIP: Time your trip for the first Sunday of the month when many of the best sights, including the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga and the Torre de Belém, open their doors for no charge.”.

Sounds exciting and fun! Cannot wait till June when we arrive in June for exploring Lisbon and nearby for the first time. Other high-values such as Dubrovnik, Budapest, Warsaw, Riga, etc., are detailed in this travel story.

From the Travel Section of the London/UK Daily Mail a week ago, they have this headline: Europe's jewels: From strolling through Monaco to sipping port in Porto with many highlights about Lisbon, etc.

Among the story aspects are: Lisbon has a Med climate but is on the Atlantic. We’d been told not to miss the market in Praca da Figueira. There were unusual things perfect for Christmas presents, so I shopped and then we visited the district of Rua Augusta to take a look at the Praca do Comercio, otherwise known as Palace Square as it was the location of the Royal Ribeira Palace until it was destroyed by a huge earthquake in 1755. Then we took a hairy taxi ride to the Castelo de Sao Jorge sitting atop the highest hill, which gave us another stunning view of the medieval maze that is the Alfama area.”.

Now it is just 47 days till we fly to Lisbon for our first visit there. Looking forward to experiencing Portugal, etc.

Enjoy your cruise, Terry, and thank you for your inputs.

Appreciate your very kind wishes and this follow-up. Just six days until we depart for Lisbon and our first visit to Portugal. Weather for our five days in Lisbon is looking good based on the AccuWeather forecasts. Really looking forward to our ship's stop in Porto. Wish we had more time there, but it should work well to sample this historic town and the region. This might be a wonderful option to come back later, for sampling more indepth for both Portugal and NW Spain. Keep up the great sharing and many ideas provided.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Hi Terry! Portugal is actually my adopted country; I am originally from Scotland but have lived here in southern Portugal for over 30 years. DH is Portuguese, though. You will be spoiled for choice with things to see and do. Lisbon is very easy to get around. I suggest you get a "viva viagem" ticket from any metro station. You then load credit on to it so that you can get around the city by bus, tram and metro. For €6.15 you get unlimited rides in the city for 24 hours from the time of first use. You will need one card for each person in your party. For an extra 4 euros, you also get train rides out to Sintra, which should definitely be on your must-do list.

Here a couple of good websites to help with your planning:

https://www.visitlisboa.com/see-and-do/sightseeing-and-activities

http://www.metrolisboa.pt/eng/customer-info/information-on-fares/

http://www.sintra-portugal.com/index.html

The Portuguese are some of the friendliest people you will find anywhere and the food is second-to-none. Look out especially for fresh fish and seafood. You will see many restaurants with aquariums and chilled displays and you can actually pick the fish you want to eat. The wine is excellent too and very underrated. Vinho verde ("green wine") is a lightly-sparkling white that pairs very well with fish and seafood. I am sure you will have a wonderful time and will want to come back again for a longer visit. :D

Packing today. Tomorrow/Friday we fly from Columbus to Philadelphia and then arrive Saturday in Lisbon. Above are some wonderful Portugal tips, ideas, etc., regarding that country from another Cruise Critic participant. Am copying this excellent info to my laptop computer in my trip file. Am sharing here. Very helpful. Looking forward to Lisbon!! Will start posting next week on the Silversea board my live/blog with lots of pictures, etc.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Arrived in Lisbon ahead of schedule this morning. Took just six and a half hours going from Philadelphia to Lisbon by air.

Super love this charming town with so much architecture, character, history and style. Below are just a few quick sight-seeing examples from this afternoon's introductory activities as we walked from our hotel on Avenue da Liberdale down to the waterfront area. Ready for lots more action in and around Lisbon. Have three and a half more days to enjoy Lisbon and nearby before boarding the Silver Spirit next Wednesday. Been catching up on some needed sleep, too! Will start live/blog after getting on the ship Wednesday.

Surprised by the many hills and twisting roads in our first visit here. Lots to see and enjoy in Lisbon!! Now we need to get some dinner. Any maybe have some beer or wine.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Here are just a few quick visual samples of our first visit to Lisbon. This includes the castle that towers over the town. This structure dates back to Roman and Moor times. Rode around on a fun Tuk Tuk vehicle to see parts of hilly old town areas. Big festival of Saint Anthony weekend happening now and going into Monday and Tuesday. Like the sunny, blue skies?:

Thanks for the photos, Terry! We'll be there for four nights before we board our cruise in September, so I'll be watching this thread. Which hotel are you staying in? Cheryl

Appreciate Cheryl's kind comments and dropping-by. Good luck for your upcoming trip/cruise. Just as proof that we enjoyed Lisbon yesterday, here are a few examples to prove the great architecture, history, sights etc., here in the capital of Portugal. Many more to come later on the full live/blog.

Off this morning to Óbidos (medieval town surrounded by walls and considered national monument), Nazaré, (for lunch in this fishing village with beautiful Atlantic coast views), Batalha (monastery of Our Lady of Victory, best example of gothic architecture in Portugal) and then the “star” of Fátima (that the Pope visited last month to celebrate the 1917 site where "Our Lady" appeared three small children).

Terry! Can't wait to see your pictures! We are going to Navarre, Obidos and Batalha next year (skipping Fatima). We are docked in Porto the day before an overnight in Lisbon. I couldn't figure out how to see as much of the Douro valley as we wanted, so we are leaving the ship in Porto, doing our Douro valley tour, overnighting in Porto, then taking the train the next morning to meet our driver in Santarem. After our tour we will meet up with the ship. Checked the weather yesterday in Lisbon, it's pretty toasty there at the moment. Hoping you are keeping cool and hydrated.

Yes, Kate, we are keeping fairly cool and comfortable. Was warm the past couple of days, but being inan air conditioned car/van helps lots. Plus, morning coolness, looking for shady places to stop/rest, etc.

We continue to totally love and be amazed by Lisbon and nearby. Yesterday, we went north/NW to Sintra, Cape Rock as the western most point of Europe, resort areas of Cascais and Estoril, etc. Saw lots of palaces, gardens, beaches, fine residences, scenic sights and history. Below are just a small sampling of those pictures. Many more to share once I start the live/blog in a few days.

Get on board our Silver Spirit ship today to start our 11-days "adventure" up the Atlantic Coast.

Monday night we were here in Lisbon as they staged the 85th edition of the city's Popular Parade that passed right in front of our hotel. It ties with the local Saint Anthony festivities on the Avenida de Liberdade (Avenue of Freedom). There were 23 different neighborhoods participating, including the winner group from Alfama. Lots of colorful costumes, great staging, dancing joyfully to Portuguese music, etc. There were 16 couples who got married as a part of the weddings of Saint Anthony at the historic Se Cathedral. We saw the couples parading, also, in vintage cars. Plus, caught part of the wedding ceremonies on national TV while having lunch along the shore north of Lisbon. These Saint Anthony celebrations were a special, surprise bonus for our visit here. This activities included lots of locals drinking and eating on the streets, Portuguese pop music blasting on loudspeakers, and the smell of sardines inundating the city. Sorry, we passed on the all-night drinking, partying, etc. Great fun to experience in Lisbon!!

It is so sad about the apartment tower fire in London. Sounds like a true "MIRACLE" in saving that baby in London. Amazing and to have it happen from the 9th or 10th floor??!! Let's hope more lives were saved.

Having been to Fatima Monday, the phrase "miracle" has more and deeper meaning. That is where Pope Francis just visited for the 100th anniversary last month. Pope John Paul II visited there three times and credits "our Lady" for his recovery from the assassination attempt against his life. The three bullet that struck him were given by this Pope to enshrine there at Fatima that just about an hour plus north of Lisbon. Although we are not Roman Catholic, this site was very moving and inspirational. A few pictures to share below.

The first two visuals are from Fatima with its older church, plus the newer Cathedral that seats 8600+ for mass, etc. Third is Our Lady of Victory at Batalha. It is considered the best example of gothic architecture in Portugal. Fourth is fish stew for two while dining overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in Nazaré. The last two pictures are from Óbidos, the medieval town surrounded by walls. With my wife are Julie and Bruce who will be on our upcoming Silversea cruise, plus super expert guide Suzana. We just spent 5 days in Lisbon and thoroughly enjoyed it. There's lots to see but many of the attractions are spread out across a broad geographic area. Fortunately, there are several options for getting around: tram, metro, funicular, ferries, etc. We took a two-day pass on the hop-on hop-off bus which worked out great. One of the 3 hoho routes runs up the coast to Cascais - which was fabulous!

Appreciate these great comments and follow-ups. For Bordeaux, some ships do sail up there and dock overnight. For our ship, the "timing and tides" would not have worked out properly Had a great five days in June exploring in and around charming and historic Lisbon. Much more info on my live/blog, plus lots of added visuals to prove our fun experiences.

From the London/UK Independent in mid July, they had this headline: “Why the Portuguese Capital Is Europe's Best Summer City Break” with these highlights: This is a dynamic time for Lisbon, with a seemingly unstoppable wave of new hotels, restaurants, and museums opening between the rambling old quarters and the waterfront that runs along the river Tagus to the Atlantic. During the summer months, it comes into its own with life lived outside and special events."

Here are some added story highlights: "Fittingly for a city that’s reinventing itself as well as celebrating its past, Lisbon is the Ibero-American Capital of Culture 2017 (lisboacapitaliberoamericana.pt) with “Past and Present” the main theme. Meanwhile, the striking new Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology officially opened this year on the neglected waterfront area in Belem. Despite the hills, Lisbon’s an easy city to explore on foot, and summer is the best time to do so. Easy to explore in a day or two, Lisbon’s historic centre is fairly compact for a European capital. After an earthquake in 1755 destroyed much of the medieval centre, a new grid-like pattern was created – a navigational gift to the modern traveller.

YES, we agree!!

From the London/UK Guardian travel section last month, they have this headline: Lisbon city guide: what to see, best bars, restaurants, hotelswith these highlights: Portugal’s capital is bursting with culture and great places to eat, stay and party – and it’s the cheapest city break destination in western Europe”.

There are many wonderful details, visuals, ideas, etc., in this media profile. They also cite "a wide glittering river, limpid skies, steep cobbled streets, palaces, churches (and a castle, of course), tiles in pink, mint and indigo, and cheap, fresh, grilled sardines to eat outside a tasca (bar) in the sun. It’s a place so beautiful you can’t believe people are using it to live in. And Lisbon is decidedly lively. Every year it seems there is more to do, more to eat and more distance to cover."

This profile also highlighted the Gulbenkian Museum that we enjoyed on a Sunday afternoon in Lisbon. This story noted that at this location you can enjoy "Degas, see ancient Egyptian stuff, hear jazz (or Verdi), feed ducks, eat ice-cream, lie on the grass in the shade of a tree … The Gulbenkian is a one-stop cultural oasis."

From the Times Travel Section of this London/UK newspaper this morning, they have this headline: The big weekend: Lisbon, Portugal with these highlights: In one of Europe’s cheapest cities, our writer gorges on custard tarts and feels the force of fado. Lisbon is not subtle with its charms. From the first tram ride up that cobbled hill, you will be seduced by glittering river views, some of the most majestic architecture in Europe and, er, washing lines crammed with colourful undies. Drink with arty locals at hip new bars, sway to fado, the city’s signature sound, and load your suitcase with retro souvenirs. As city breaks go, they don’t get much prettier, and it’s outstandingly good value, too.

There are many pictures, ideas, tips, suggestions, etc., for excellent potentials to see and do during a weekend in Lisbon. This detailed profile bring back many wonderful memories, etc., from June 2017 time there in this charming, historic city.

From the Travel Section of the London/UK Times this morning, they have this headline: top writers on their holidays in 2017with these highlights on Lisbon: I’m not surprised Madonna has moved to Lisbon. I adored it the first time I went: its historic neighbourhoods, traditional cafes and miradouros, where an extraordinary view appears unexpectedly round a cobbled corner. I loved the little decorative kiosks where the necking of ginjinha — cherry hooch — at 10am is not only not frowned on, but positively encouraged. Going back this year, the love intensified into passion, mostly because the restaurants are more exciting than ever.

Thank you for the link Terry. Good reading.

Appreciate this nice follow-up from our "neighbor" in North Carolina.

From the CNN cable news in late December, they had this headline: best places to visit in 2018 with these highlights regarding Lisbon: “It's no secret that the capital of Portugal offers Mediterranean skies, Atlantic surf and hilly, cobbled streets with panoramic views of red roofs and houses in shades of yellow, pink and blue. But in 2018 this famously relaxed and convivial city has more to celebrate than usual.

Lots of details and ideas are offered in this profile. They also noted: "A new daily Delta Airlines daily flight from Atlanta starting May 24 will bring US visitors. And then there's the Portuguese capital's rise as a European tech hub, helped by cheaper rents than London and a thriving cultural scene. Oh, and did we mention the food? Portugal now has 28 Michelin stars, of which six are in Lisbon. The city's pastéis de nata, or custard tarts, never stop being a draw. The most celebrated, and with the longest lines, is Pasteis de Belem on the Belem seafront, but great versions can be found all around the city. Don't miss: The resort town of Sintra, a short day trip away. It's a pastel-colored wonderland of hilltop fairytale palaces and European Romantic architecture."

Yes, we loved Lisbon and all that we saw and enjoyed in Portugal. This CNN story bring back nice memories. All true!! Lisbon is "guilty" as charged!!

From the New York Times Travel Section coming this Sunday morning, they have this headline: 36 Hours in Lisbon with these highlights: In the Portuguese capital, a weekend’s worth of seafood feasts, chic rooftop bars, undulating streets and landmarks, both Old World and futuristic..

Lots of details, ideas, suggestions, etc., are contained in this profile of this historic city that we super loved last June. They also summarized with these comments on Lisbon: "Today the Portuguese capital is better known for its red-hot culinary scene and fine cultural institutions, including a new world-class museum on the waterfront. The faded Old Europe charm remains, but with a stream of exciting openings and fresh inspiration drawn from across the Atlantic, Lisbon seems primed for a new golden era."

Beautiful photos! Glad you enjoyed your trip. On our first Azamara cruise, we docked right in Bordeaux overnight and absolutely loved it.

Appreciate this nice follow-up and your kind comments regarding our Portugal, Bordeaux, etc., adventure last year. Below are four of the pictures featured in this New York Times profile. Lots more pictures, plus an interactive map, are included with this article in this major newspaper.
