We arrive in Civitavecchia May 29 and want to see the Palatine area near the Forum and our thinking is to take the train from Civitavecchia around 8 am to the Roma Termini and walk 30 minutes to Palatine. We would buy return tickets to avoid 2 line ups. Does anyone have any other suggestions.

First, the ticket you need is the 5-zone BIRG, which costs €12 and covers regional train fare between Civitavecchia and Rome as well as all mass transit (metro, buses and trams) in Rome for the full day. You can buy this at the newsstand in the train station at Civitavecchia.

Next, you do not want to go to Termini, it's out of the way and will waste a lot of time. Instead, get off the train at Roma Ostiense and change there to the metro via the underground tunnel that connects the train station with the Piramide metro station. Take the metro (direction Rebibbia or Jonio) for just one stop to Circo Massimo. Exit here and walk one third of a mile north, past Circus Maximus, with the ruins of Palatine above you. The entrance and ticket office will be on your left on Via di San Gregorio.
